The "expert" the show used had been DEBUNKED in the 70s but was hired on anyway. he was a fictional Indian at best with his whole religious system a falsehood, on top of that one episode that said the native American Indians were bred with alien DNA which is why they were "special",because they'd have been nobodies otherwise. Chakotay got 1 good lone episode(The Fight) & a couple mediocre episodes. He was otherwise background filler & his heritage was almost meaningless 99% of the time. The 7 of 9 romance was shoehorned in to give his character something to do but he hated it.
Incidentally Tim Russ had to fix a lot of the Vulcan stuff because the writers kept fucking that up as well. Harry Kim did jack shit & the only reason Garrett Wang didn't quit or let Harry get killed was because of Time Magazine. Jen Lein was fired to make room for the "sexier" girl(though her character being barely 3 years old made guys liking her feel a bit creepy). Neelix got the most to do but his character was badly developed & his backstory often forgotten. They wrote a PBS Kids character for a serious Sci-Fi show. The EMH was probably the best character overall.
