So with the new release of Wolverine, you can see hasbro updated the mold to be pinless. You can also see the new power rangers mmpr buck from the reverse colors two pack, has pin less joints

This proves hasbro can update old molds with the pinless technology, and any time they don't, its because they're choosing not too.

(Also retro cards are a scam too.)

I hate Hasbro as much as anyone else, but you're mistaken.
These aren't simply 'updated' molds. They have to completely re-make the tooling/molds in order to implement pinless joints so the cost is the same as making tooling for a completely new figure. We're talking $50K+. So it's not like they are just refusing do make all their figures pinless. They're introducing new molds slowly over time where they can.

That's not the Vulcan body. It's a re-tooled Wolverine body with pinless limbs, and new legs with the straps set in the sculpt rather than slipped over top.

If this means they'll release a non-cel shaded animated VHS wolverine on card back with the new pinless limbs, I'm for it. Don't think I'll rebuy all the wolverines I already have though. They still need to do the retro commando wolverine, Xmen Evolution Wolverine, Wolverine and the Xmen, etc. Lot's of more version before they go back and redo the previous version just a few years ago.

Lets assume your right, and this is an entire new mold? If you know youre going to use vulcan 20 times in the next 3 years, financially its a good idea to just get 2 of the new molds since you will eventually have too anyway. The only reason bucky cap is sticking around is because hasbro won't stack its factories with vulcan molds.

However i don't think you're correct. We know old molds can be modified and retooled. We don't know if they can be pinless. I think its likely they can be.

You are wrong, sorry. The entire way the pinless tech works is because of a difference in the way the injection molding process is done. With traditional joints with pins, the pins (POM) are in their own separate mold, the body parts (PVC) are in their own (usually multiple) molds. They are shot separately and after the plastic parts are out, they were assembled by hand.

With pinless joints, the elbows and knee caps are not made from PVC any more, but POM. Different material than the old way they were made, so those old molds for the PVC elbows/knees are useless. After these POM knees and elbows are shot and out of their molds, they are them placed inside cavities of the new PVC molds that are used to make the limbs. The PVC used to make the limbs is then shot into that so that when the mold is opened up, the knee or elbow joints are already in place in the arm or leg. Since they are different types of plastic, they don't fuse together and there is no other manual assembly for these pinless limbs required. The arrangement of the parts inside the molds has to be different compared to the older versions of the limbs that used pins so those older PVC part molds are also useless. In the new molds for pinless limbs, the cavity will have to have the limb in the 'assembled' position. There's no way the old molds could be modified to allow for pinless arms and legs.

TLDR - Pinless limbs/figures NEED completely new molds. The changes required are not anything that can be done with simple modifications. The materials and processes to make a pinless limb is very different than making a figure's limb with traditional way with pins.

They are producing these figures in large quantities and most likely have duplicates of the same body's mold in order to pump out figures quicker or when they have the need to use the same body (perhaps a commonly used one, like Bucky Cap was for years) in multiple waves/sets at the same times. Each mold to make a new figure is insanely expensive. Like $50-100K. That's why they don't just transition all at once from an older body to a new one like the Vulcan body. Do you know how expensive if would be to just produce multiples of the Vulcan molds and immediately scrap the older body molds? That would never happen. That's why it's happening over time.

If you do proper maintenance on the molds they should all last a long time. With the retro iron man, we can see they might last 10+ years.

How is it not more expensive to do all at once? Let's just say each new mold costs a cool $100K. If they made three at once, why in the world do you think it wouldn't cost $300K? Yes, they last many years depending on maintenance and how much they get used, but that cost is still all paid right when they are being produced. They have a set budget for each wave they have to adhere to.

Trust me dude. I know how the tooling is produced and how pinless vs with pins is different. I gave you a thorough explanation.

Which molds are you claiming have been 'modified'? A mold modification is like adding texture to something. Like they did with the Riders Logan's jeans after that some mold used for the Old Man Logan in a previous wave had smooth jeans. They can't do drastic changes or anything that requires different placement in the molds. They are giant blocks of steel. Once you carve away at that, you can't magically add steel back to it a re-carve it again. I think you are confusing a 'modified' mold with a new mold simply using one of the existing 3D sculpts. For instance the pinless Wolverine body in the OP's image. That is super similar to the same Wolverine sculpt they've been using for years, but that's not a modified mold. It's a newly tooled mold, just based off that same 3D sculpt.

Just going to not notice the pinless arms, new sculpted forearms, pinless legs, new sculpted thigh and lower legs each with straps set in them rather than on top? This new pinless Blue/Yellow Wolverine is based on that same 3D sculpt, yet, but it's a completely newly tooled mold with all those above mentioned changes.

Exactly. They kept the torso tool, and made new arms and legs. Just like they do with any other figure that used bucky cap.

Havok is bucky cap, and yet has new arms.

Yes, they've tooled just new limbs for figures before. But this blue/yellow Wolvy only re-uses the torso without modification. All the arms and legs are new, plus they had to make a new tool for POM parts too since the elbows and knees now have to be made from POM and not PVC. So all the joint discs, pegs, and internal parts likely got tooled again too. If they only kept the ABS torso's tooling and re-tooled the rest, that's still like 75% of tooling for a figure that had to be new.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make right now though. Any kind of tooling is a massive cost which is why they don't just go making tons of new tools for pinless figures all at once, which is what the OP was questioning.

You're just completely misunderstanding all these terms, how tooling is made, and all that. Re-tool means creating tooling from scratch. The most expensive part of figure production. So yes, 're-tooling', creating new tooling for a pinless limb figure, whatever you want to call it is expensive as hell and that's why they don't immediately create new tools for pinless figures across the board.

Not backing up McFarlane, but he has so much more freedom to do whatever he wants since he owns the company and is not publicly traded. He doesn't have to ht certain revenue milestones like Hasbro and Mattel do. Apples to oranges. And Hasbro's Fortnite waves are a bit different to compare them to also since they only do like 2-3 newly tooled figures per wave and their waves are only 3-4 figures. That means they are all at least double packed, which helps cost go down per figure as well. In Legends, only one or two figures per wave is double packed.

I think the issue is that Hasbro uses a number of factories doing a different wave/figure each. When they introduce a new mold they don't update all their factories with a copy of this new mold, so some of them are still making limbs with pins even when others have been doing pinless for a while.

It's understandable, as changing everything and throwing all the old molds to the trash is quite an effort and a waste.
Imo what is unforgivable is making the new Vulcan body without a ball jointed torso.
