>>10096033The other day I was at Good Will and a bunch of vintage Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit memorabilia had showed up, and I realized we had probably just lost an elder statesman in the Tolkien fandom. It was kinda melancholy, and I also realized that someday, there will actually be a generation of LOTR fans who are too young to remember at time before Lord of the Rings was a movie franchise. I love the movies, but that day was the first time I actually realized what a unique place I'm in to have read the books and been a fan before I ever even knew there would be live action movies.
And now I feel really bad for young Star Wars fans, however few there are. Being a Star Wars fan now is as bad as being a fan of the Sonic Games. It used to be that whenever you heard that blaring John Williams anthem in front of a movie you knew you were in for something special, but now it's always accompanied by a groan and the nagging thought of "oh great, is this going to be one of the shitty Disney ones?"
