Newer games have a significantly lower yield for said grind, as most grind is "play for countless hours perpetually to get a single cosmetic unlock", whereas older games had MUCH more yield to grinds, and they were "grind it to beat it once to unlock a super cool op power up or big secret story shit.
The 10 hour grind was to unlock le epic secrets.
Now the 10 hour grind is expected if you at least once a week to populate the game, and little else.
I agree with other guy that it depends on the game as well, but also disagree because imaginative people will expand on shit on their own, regardless of what they get.
