The ability of flight is key here, if it's something that can stay in mid-air briefly but can't sustain being in the air for an extended period of time it doesn't count. A lot of people here will trash anything early RG, but if you want, you CAN salvage it. The thing is you have to be open-minded about what solutions you want to apply and the amount of time you want to put on a kit. There's nothing wrong with if you choose to go with the HG Revive instead since that's a much sturdier build.

In the case of grandpa, your only real options is to either topcoat the inner frame to give it enough material that you slow down the decay of the inner frame plastic, or you use superglue on the joints. In both instances, you want to apply a light coating so as to increase the integrity, but not too much that you make it extremely stiff and brittle.

Guess I'll just skip it then. Futureshine tends to work on most stuff, but if it's a plastic degeneration issue, not much will fix that. It's a shame Bandai won't go back and fix these older kits, because they still look better than just about any other release they've done.

It's not so much the plastic degradation as much as it is Bandai using softer plastic on kits that are meant to be displayed/posed (which is particularly confusing that they even went with soft plastics to begin with). And the harsh reality is that more you articulate soft plastics, the looser they become over time until it gets to the point where they can't hold the weight of armor/weapons/shields/etc.

Yeah because most of the early RGs use picrel, or a variation of this kind of frame depending on how much armor is on. Imagine if the foundation of your house was built on rubber instead of cement.

I will admit that trying to fix them can be frustrating, which is why I will always tell someone that they can fix it if they like, but they have to be willing to put in the time. If not, there's always a better grade if they prefer a stable and stress-free build.

The only objectively terrible and unfixable RGs I'd say based on my own experience: Freedom, Strike Freedom, Zeta, Sinanju, Infinite Justice.

I haven't tried the HG Zakus, so someone here probably has a better take on it.

Guessing they're just too heavy and/or loaded with stuff to work? How did the Unicorn escape this fate, did they change up the skeleton inside or something? Everyone seems to point to that one as the gold standard for an RG.

For the Freedom, Justice, and Strike Freedom, no matter what I tried, I always had the problem of parts falling off or the kit flopping around because of too much weight. Sinanju is an unstable frustrating mess, and Zeta is an irredeemable hand grenade with a transformation gimmick that does not work.

RG Unicorn is a very weird one, but the good type of weird. I remember when this kit came out and everyone pretty much held their breath to see if this was going to be Zeta 2.0 given how terrible its reputation is w/ the transforming gimmick + shit frame. Instead, it turned out to be a near perfect kit with great stability, details and of course got milked like crazy with different variations.

The Sinanju suffers greatly from them trying to recycle the Gundam mk2 frame, which is a shame cause the gloss finish and gold trim looks pretty nice out of the box

That's one thing about the Sinanju that infuriates me further. It has such a nice color and trim finish that's ruined by the fact that it's under an unstable frame.

Some of the garbage RGs at least have a HG that if you apply the time with scribe, paint, etc., can look really good. But Sinanju is the best example of needing an RG 2.0 update. Maybe I'll just end up getting the HG and customize that myself instead.

Nah I disagree. Even with the stands on, I had problems adjusting Justice without also having parts falling off. Justice's frame simply isn't strong enough for the amount of shit that it has.

The Origins version is really nice, both in terms of articulation and smooth build. It also does a really good up balancing the traditional look with a realistic machine look in some of its lines and panels.
The only thing it has "against" it is that for not that much more money, the 3.0 gives you more details (in terms of linework, decals, and an overall more futuristic look). At the same time, the 3.0 achieves that look by sacrificing a bit of stability (nowhere near as bad as some of the early RG stuff, but you will notice some flops and instability here and there)

If you're talking about the side skirts and especially the shield connection, yeah I'll give you those. Especially the shield will drop if you look at it wrong.
Still disagree with the frame not being strong enough but mine's on a stand in a pretty basic aerial pose so there's not much it has to hold up anyway, as the stand clips onto the backpack.

Every new variation is a new kit.

In this case it is more profitable for Bandai to release a RG Sinanjew Stain than to go back and fix whatever was wrong with RG Vanilla Sinanjew.

But they won't even do that, because Sinanjew is old and busted and everybody who wanted it already bought it, built it and bitched about it everywhere they could. Then they moved on.

Are these alternate color exclusives that Kotobukiya offers meant to placate people who aren't going to paint? Seems like something that would just get covered up with layers of primer, paint, and then a top coat.

But before you put on primer is it recommended to sand the parts down with a high grit sandpaper so the primer will bond to the plastic better? Some guides mention to while others skip over it completely.

Only whatever was the last layer of paint/primer/etc will have an effect on the color normally. So don't prime black if you're doing light colors, etc.

This is really only relevant for when you want to go dark > light color (for instance, let's say you want to go from black to pastel light blue). Because if you don't follow the gradient, you end up with lighter pieces that look a lot darker because of the tones of color underneath.

If you're going light > dark, it's significantly easier because darkness overpowers light.

Generally speaking, you always want to sand before priming for better adhesion. However if you have your lazy moments, then pick and choose based on the finish of the plastic that you're working on. If you have a glossy surface, definitely sand, but if you have a matte surface, you could get away with not sanding.

No effect if you are using a proper hobby paint and applying enough of it for proper coverage.

Not at all, speaking strictly from experience.

Anything wooden starts absorbing liquid (it doesn't need to absorb much), mask starts to dry on the applicator, sticks to the mask already applied, pulls it. Once I switched to plastic sticks all of that went away.

So after almost 10 years of continuous use, my SPN-120 are starting to show some signs of wear. I am starting to see some stressed plastic in the cuts.

I am still going to use them for the stuff I am planning to paint (which is like 95%) but for those rare cases when there must be absolutely no stress since the part will not be painted (such as FAG/MD fleshy bits), I got me a brand new ones.
Luckily the supply issues seem to be over and they are only 5.5K these days.

I think one of the things that made me more accepting to it is because of the frame. MG inner frames are kinda lacking recently, well maybe around 4-6 years now, and seeing the internal frame in person made me go wow, felt excited again on building a MG again where the recent releases didnt do that.

I think this one should be the real 3.0 of the MG line. hopefully this is the way MG should move forward and not a 1 time thing

Varies wildly. If there is an official release date (month) announced its usually around 4 to 6 months. There is precedent for it because they did do both the Wing and the Wing Custom plus the Tallgeese 3, but it's really annoying Bandai just sort of hops around when it comes to what it releases. This is pretty hard to think that they won't do that considering how much the West loves those suits. Wing and EW kits tend to sell really well even years after its initial anime release. Every time I go to my local shop, or shop online I always see restocks of EW MGs or even the HGs sell out. I think there's only been a couple of occasions where Sandrock or Heavyarms shelfwarmed but not for long.

I think if anything, the fact that they pretty much did everything Wing-related as high grades and master grades is probably what's killing the urgency for putting Endless Waltz kits into Real Grade.

Highly doubt it. After Gundam Wing was airing, they saw a spike in demand for Wing mobile suits whether it's action figures or model kits. I remember reading throughout the 00s and even 10s that there was consistent demand for Wing suits long after the anime aired, whether it was the MG/ver Ka., or the High Grades.

If Bandai really didn't care about the West, then they wouldn't need to reprint Wing kits. Add in the instability of the world economy (and people scaling back their), and you have a pretty strong need to look for any stable revenue source you can find.

I added a dozen pine kinda trees last, did add another 12 of the normal trees. Probably add another dozen or two before Im satisfied. Just dont want to over crowd it. Tough to get the whole thing in one photo too. Probably clear it off when I add trees and glue everything down then seal it with modge podge.

Heres the city corner. I just bought some trees from hobby lobby. Can get some from amazon for cheaper but thats kinda a crap shoot on what size theyll actually be and if they wont look like shit compared to the photos. Aside from that hangup I am tempted to order a few trees from amazon just to see how they are. Probably make another more living city style diorama/layout. Been eying some tomix buildings and some other tomytec train scale buildings.

It's a kitbash of a bunch of 30 Minute Missions kits, if you want the full breakdown it goes something like this:

The tiltrotors themselves come from the Sergeant Verde Buster DX set and are the one non-30MM bit in that build.
