I was into them and still have most of my collection in a box downstairs. I'm surprisingly not super nostalgic for them, but I'm also from the 80s so my tastes are set a few years earlier. I think I was probably around 12 when they were in stores.
I do have a memory of going to Toys R Us and seeing a huge wall of Zbots including many I had never seen before. I remember being very intrigued about the rarer ones that I never had.
