When purchasing vintage sets does anyone here pay much attention to period specific pieces? I don't mean like old grays vs. new grays, but the part differences on the underside of pieces. Sometimes bricklink lists these separately but other times not. I just bought 6375-2 (1980) from a guy on ebay and its clear some parts are newer replacements which annoys me. Pic related top row is 2x2 tiles. The gray one looks original but the yellow is clearly newer as it has the part # on it. Second row is black 2x2 plates. This set contained three different versions. Left with no markings, center with a letter and a number and what looks like the part # or Lego logo melted off (this is also present on the gray tile,) and right with the part #. Am I an idiot and wasting my time worrying about this kind of thing? I think its important the parts are uniform and look the same and sometimes the newer versions have a quite different sheen, or even shade of color on them. Also does anyone know what this melt mark is?

If you check the old fabuland moulds, like the cauldron, it has that stuff too. It is a cheap fill in of the negative space to remove the shape from the mould.

They are still some what usable for vehicles houses etc ,

The castle 1984 6080 king castle came with
30 of these joggers which are very in flexible part in terms of mocs

I'm building a castle now and those joggers are very useful for the outer wall, building solely with bricks would be much more expensive.

This piece is like what? 3-5 dolars on bricklink for this in good condition? Meanwhile you can get something like big cup of 1x2 grey brick with brick pattern lego wall shop for 15 dol. Its way cheaper to build with new bricks then ordering old castle burps via bricklink.

I feel your pain. Coincidentally I ordered a Chinese knockoff set of the Big Boy a few days before the announcement. Although while the brick quality won't be as good and I hear it can't turn on Lego Tracks, the knock off set will probably display better than whatever Lego is going to make. To my understanding, a lot of Mission Deep Freeze isn't much to write home about, but the recolors and parts usage is slick, and the transformations are definitely nice.
Super underrated subtheme though by any means, and fairly cheap on the aftermarket.

He killed his viewership when he moved reviews to a new channel and started over on his subscriber count. Thats an interesting challenge knowing everything we know about the differences how The Rebels and the Empire treated their Pilots.

Rebels had always needed to work with their limited numbers compared to the nearly infinite manpower of the empire.
While the empire was always trying to utilize that infinite manpower with its resources.

The rebels preferred ships that had shields and hyper-drives so they could use hit and run tactics while the Empire TIE fighters were shieldless and needed a carried around by larger hyper-jump capable vessels.

Aside from the Shields and Hyper-drive the TIE is also comparable with the X-wing with
The X-Wings: Better Durability, More Firepower, Hit-n-Run tactics
The TIE: Better Maneuverability, Better when fighting in big numbers

So the Rebels would either only use a stolen TIE for short distance patrols or stealth mission, rather than risking loosing a valuable pilot in it, OR they would try to equip it with more protection to increase its survivability. and a hyperdrive to fit their guerilla warfare better.

Most of the cost isn't the obvious stuff like the drill and laser, it's the old teal pieces that were only released in a couple uncommon sets, and shipping when you have to order 5 of a part from 4 different stores because no one has 20 of them.
The brown chains are especially obnoxious, only ever came in a few RR sets and the original Hogwarts, so they're upwards of $2 each most places.

They released this for the 90th anniversary of lego after a poll was made were fans could vote for their favorite theme. Castle and Space won. I find it to be overpriced but it's probably the best we're gonna get out of lego right now. Alternatively check out the $100 Creator castle (31120) from last year.

Thing is, orginal is overprized, but i cant see how can it be 2x big like the people want it to be, maybe raise the wall, some towers, but no more ground plates extentions. The same criteria probably affect stores elsewhere in the world but this is what I know. Lego makes available a specific catalog that is only parts intended for PAB walls. The managers can then select the parts they want and Lego ships them out. These boxes are purchased as inventory, which means the store is on the hook to sell all the parts they get. Stores with low throughput and bad or tasteless management get dopey PAB walls that never change, while mine gets dope parts that get scooped by the cupful because the manager knows exactly what we want, and since the throughput is healthy we get a new lineup every week. I don't necessarily know if managers have access to a PAB catalog in other parts of the world so it may work completely different.

Seems like terrible business sense. Corporate could just get a couple code monkeys to make an algorithm that aggregates pick-a-brick sales data and spits out what sells best, then ship that out to every store. Not like customer preference is going to be meaningfully different city to city for this sort of thing.
Pretty much every retail chain has been doing this for ages now, really helps sales when you have concrete data on what people want instead of letting a bunch of middle management types blindly guess. Imagine if Walmart SMs could manually decide what they put on the shelves, would be awful.

exactly how it works, but it depends on the store's throughput and staff interest. Since stores have to pay Lego up-front for the inventory, they need to get rid of what they have before they can responsibly purchase more. I get the impression that the size of a single PAB inventory box is enough to stock the plexi tube on the wall several times, so a lame part can stick for a loooong time, esp if they order multiple boxes. Variety is also gonna be based on purchasing style, because while Lego allows an order every week, it's normal for stores to order more boxes less often. This means they might be relying on staple parts they consistently receive in bulk instead of conceiving novel orders in reaction to their market. I think it's just down to how much staff cares about lego building in general and how observant they care to be about their PAB throughput. An actual market-conscious lego enthusiast in charge of purchasing is extremely powerful. It's very interesting to talk to my store's manager because he's very up-front about what the store struggles and succeeds with.

Im just returning from lego waw store as i write, so again ots mostly the same shit, they maybe changed 4 boxes, rest are the same. Yeah man, sounds like that's just their purchasing style. Frankly, I think always having a supply of staple pieces like masonry bricks is smart because like you say people will scoop full cups. However, I also completely agree that some more color variety among those types of "staple" parts would be really nice for us, and would also potentially crate an ecosystem of gentle urgency to compel people to buy as much of a color as they can before the color rotation changes. For the foliage, I know for a fact that the bright green is the only color available on the internal PAB store right now so that's unfortunately down to what your manager has access to. Depending on your social spaghetti level I suggest getting to know the staff and letting them know what you think about their PAB selection. They might even have some insight as to why they do things the way they do, even if it's just something metric like sales.

I'm not sure if it works off the same purchase system as PAB but for Lego it's definitely a way to unload warehoused parts from previous manufacturing runs. Legoland is similar in that they'll get unique parts from certain sets in bulk. My BAM has a bunch of monkie kid heads, old CMF heads, and generic faces from basic sets. They also have BAM exclusive figures like pic related that only get shipped to lego stores. The pieces are loose in the tower but if the staff is based they'll prebuild them in groups of 3 in the packaging for kids to grab. Even those are a way to unload parts though. They do make unique parts for them, but for example the princess' hair here was only used in two HP sets back in 2019-20 and was probably in a warehouse bin standing by this whole time. Through the process of stuff getting picked out and new stuff getting put in I think that's why it ends up being such a weird mix of stuff. However, I have no idea if there's a choice in what a store can receive like with PAB. I'll ask next time. You should also ask your store if they can get smileys. If you come there a decent number of times they might value you paying 66 cents per piece at the BAM tower more often if it's easy enough for them to do.

Small spooky lego store haul from today. Grateful that I was able to find all the pieces for the los muertos lady since she's the coolest of the bunch by far (no jack-o-lantern pieces left though unfortunately). That castle is really cool. I'm in this thread to consider reviving my childhood love for lego.
400 euros... For... What I feel is barely larger than older castles I own. Maybe I'm missing something here due to being out of the hobby for 15+ years? What makes this 400 euros?

Castle on the left cost maybe 100 euros. Royal knights castle 100-130. I'm guessing its because they use all those seperate bricks instead of the wall pieces? I guess thats worth something but going 3 to 4 times higher on price isn't really what I'd consider to be a good decision? What would happen if you bulk buy pieces from second hand lots etc. Wouldn't you get more bang for your buck?

This castle is way bigger than older ones, it got more parts and its more detailed. The real difference is that it doesnt have burps (1 sided rocks) and burp ground plate, with those additions the 2022 castle would be truely enormous. Still this castle is overprized like 95% of lego nowadays, still better than most tm stuff when it comes to price/part ratio, in the end all you buy is a piece of plastic. You have to ask youself how much youre willing to spend on your hobby. I personaly dont buy of chinese as a rule, but suit yourself, its your money, quality differs. Atm i just chastise myself with buying new lego, i buy maybe 2 sets per year + few orders from bricklink. It works wonders because i have more time to perfect my unfinished moc designs and frankly im dangerously close to filling most free shef space in my living room with lego. You can easly overdose on lego but from my expirience, buying set like new castle, baraccuda bay, smithy, 3in1 castle or something similar, can last you months if you moc with it.

You could probably go to something like 250e if you order separate bricks, still its like 525 parts vs 4514, 12 vs 22 minis, at least it should coast twice the amount of black knight castle, and it probably would if it would be sold in 90s, but things get pricer, specialy in current times. 2022 castle was priced at 350e before the relese but lego slapped a raise like a month before it got on shelves. I would probably give it 300e price tag to consider it fair, but i still think in pre covid prices, still i bought it for forestman promo and the fact that i only moc with medieval pirates, adventurers and lego space past 2nd wave - theres still not a lot of stuff that lego releses in those generes.

Thanks for the explanation guys, I get it a lot more now. Also, yeah I have prices in my head from back in the day when they where in retail... I guess my lego collection is worth more now than when my parents bought it for me.
I still think 400e is very expensive, but I guess given this it is explained better. And probably the loose bricks are a goldmine if I want to design my own castle. It's funny how the rock, wall and baseplate pieces are so hated, I've always quite liked them myself and have a ton of formed base plates lying around from different castles, aquazone and rock raiders. I was actually very disappointed when the bat knight castle came without one and just had the green flat plates. I guess the adults playing with it now prefer to build from scratch using smaller bricks.
