the blue plastic here, ive seen this plastic mostly in playmobil sets, also in cigar cases etc as imitation wood. its quite stiff and sturdy, and it looks like it has small air bubbles or something in it. i think it was more popular in 60s and 70s. maybe wrong board but w/e

Not familiar with Playmobil plastics, but bakelite is often used as imitation wood. I don't think the one in your pic is bakelite though because it's not flexible for C-clips like those.

Good question, I've often wondered as well. Those Playmobil pieces smell like Elmer's Glue.Its some kind of composite.

It's vinyl and it can be scuffed up with a wire brush to look that way.

They can also put an additive into the vinyl when being mixed, like abestos, talcum, or even fiberglass, to give it that texture.

chances are it's just a wire brush that was used to scuff it up.

Oh that makes more sense. Vinyl is also paintable unlike nylon.

As for the wood texture you can easily sculpt that into the steel mold, hard plastics like vinyl and ABS will pick it up no problem.

the patterns are too random to be molded, which also means it could just be an additive.

I still say it's a brushed. Maybe a sander? Lots of things can be used to create that texture.

I've seen this type of plastic used in certain institutional settings for cafeteria trays or garbage cans. I think it's a type of recycled plastic.

recycled plastic should be as smooth as brand new plastic, otherwise it's unsuitable for most uses. Only reason you suaully see recycled shit looking less than new, is styling or to make it appear "recycled" like non-bleached recycled paper.

yes.
unless it's an additive to the plastic. If they added something, there should be small pieces laying on the surface of the plastic, hence the texture. Asbesto has tiny little thread like fibers, which you could be able to dig out by making gouges. Talcum/sand/glass would have sparkly bits, which you can also dig out.

Other ways to get non-slip surface is by adding grit (talcum/sand/etc) to the plastic. They used to use asbestos for that texture, durability, and cancer.

texture can be molded into vinyl, but usually requires extra geometry to make sure it doesn't break.

nylon scuffs easily, but it can be as smooth as any plastic.
If you look carefully at OP's image, you can see where the plastic is smooth in the middle of the cart. Likely wherever a worker missed with the sander/brush

It’s most likely a composite material, hence the grain. It looks similar to the decking material TREX which is also a composite.
