I mean, focusing on a small cast can work (see Beast Wars), but the problem was the main cast they went with kind of sucked. At least for the Guardians side (Cy Kill and Crasher almost single handedly salvage the Renegade side).
First there's Turbo. Look, I love Turbo, to this day he remains my favorite Gobot character. But you have to admit that he's a one-note character. He's the stock 'strong, friendly, tough guy'. I don't think he got any characterisation beyond that.
Then there's Leader 1. Leader 1 always came across a kind of a weak sauce leader to me, especially compared to Optimus despite him having the better alt mode and powers. Part of it is his VA not matching Cullen's charisma, but the writing didn't do Leader 1 any favors. Most of what I remember of Leader 1 was him getting his ass kicked (he spends most of the introductory mini series injured) or him using his force field and running out of power. Yeah, sure Optimus got his ass kicked sometimes too but at least had several moments of badassery to balance it out.
And finally we come to Scooter. Yes, I'm going there. On the surface, I can kind of understand where they were going with Scooter: the kid mascot character is weak and doesn't have weapons but makes up for it with being the smart one and having special hologram powers. The problem was in the execution, Scooter is just a whiny little bitch and has one of the most annoying voices ever. Worst of all the little fucker is in nearly every episode. At least in Transformers, Bumblebee isn't nearly as annoying and isn't in every episode. I consider Scooter to be the rest whether one can like Gobots. If you can tolerate or even like him, then you'll probably enjoy the show. If you can't stand him, then this isn't the show for you.
And this is the cast that you're stuck with for like 90% of the show.
