What's the best reference figure? I'm thinking it would be nice to have a physical reference for drawing, sculpting, animating, etc.

I use Body-chan and kun for some poses that really confuse me (pic related), but really you need to study human anatomy and how it works. People think dolls are a good shortcut to being a better artist, but you aren't learning anything. Drawing freely and thinking 3D helps a lot.

This dude right here. I can use almost any decent figure to figure out a pose and the foreshortening. Knowing all those attachment points is what really works for a good drawing.

He’s 20 bucks on amazon and i did the greywash myself.

As a professional artist who's been doing this for a decade plus at this point, you don't buy a figure. None of them properly display things like musculature or really do anything than give you a basic idea and starting point. There's a reason that the classical drawing figure is basic shapes. If you need or want more than that, don't spend money on getting some figure that'll still not do what you actually need it to do when you don't have anatomical knowledge.
Pirate or buy CSP and use the 3d models as a basis. You can either use them for reference on a separate canvas or trace over them. You can adjust lighting direction and intensity, focus and perspective, change proportions and have control over as many bones as you could generally want in a 3d model for this kinda thing. It's far easier and better than any figure I've ever had for reference and you can also stick it into other 3d environments as well as apply objects to the character and said environments.

This is also one of the only useful things in this regard, because it lets you quickly check where and how muscles sit.

Muscles shift, stretch, squish and move around drastically depending on pose, knowing where they are and how they look in the one neutral position is of little help. It's probably best to find as may nude pose references as possible from all kinds of angles and analyze the differences yourself for future application in drawing. To me personally, studying skeletal structure was more important than muscles because the skeleton stays consistent in all poses and by knowing the bones you can more or less figure out the correct behavior of muscles that overlay them.

XNALara let's you do this for free too but you can use models ripped from videogames if you want a specific character. Not the best but I've used it when I wanted to see outfits from different angles or unusual designs, headdresses, etc.
