I asked this late in the other thread so I'll try again here. Would cutting some of that bicep away give him better range? If it didn't look too bad and let him bend his arms more I'd think about doing it when mine arrives. Know of anyone who did?

Also where's that sawed off from? I'd much rather have a basic old fashioned one just like that over the one he comes with.

Is McFarlane the best classic slayer figure out there? I'm a poorfag and don't care too much about him not articulating insanely well. If there's better affordable options out there for classic Doomguy though I'd certainly look into them.

It is possible to build your own with third party pieces. But this will run you probably like $100+ and you will need to paint it and assemble it yourself. For a casual fan, McFarlane's is a better choice.

The McFarlane looks fine enough in basic action poses, and you can definitely make it look badass just standing around on your desk. It's a great toy for ~$25 I think.

I also own this and it's a piece of shit. One of the worst figures I've purchased in years. The old Neca Duke has better range all around than this figure that's a decade newer. Not much better, but the fact that the comparison can be made is embarrassing. Elbows barely go 80, knees likewise, meaning virtually any pose is a nightmare of compromises. Unless you're willing to gap fill various holes, the Eternal weapons are stuck on him. He can barely hold his own weapon which looks awful, and telling people to just buy the weapons pack isn't exactly a fucking answer to how horrible the thing is.
Like it came out a year after the first figure they made and is somehow exactly as bad, just with better paint purely by the virtue that the design needs less paint. The fact that this figure came out in 2022 and isn't one of those weird gamestop exclusive figures from 2009 is a travesty.

That's what I was curious about, thanks. I'd be more annoyed and unlikely to buy it if it was much more than 25. At that price point and how nice it looks to me I think it's worth it. Sure I'd like it to be better but since there's nothing else out there except modifying it or just kitbashing your own, I'll live with the limited articulation. I own the Marvel Select Anti-Venom and it has some pretty shit articulation, and this Doomguy looks like it at the very least has more movement than that thing.

Cuddle team leader for example doesn't have any of those problems, and does a much better job shouldering and aiming down sights than modern Mcfarts.

It's a standard release in the UK, so a lot of us were able to buy it off a UK seller on eBay for $25 or so. That listing is now gone, but you can still find him in stock on various UK websites just by Googling around. Find one that will ship to wherever you are, and you're golden.

Mhm, tried it and I couldn't get anything that looked good or as close and the other anons posts, too limited.
Hip firing and holding a rifle casually is what I was referring to in my original post when I said it can "two hand a weapon".
I still like the figure though, limited as it is, I do hope a company like 1000toys gets a crack at a classic Doom figure one day, I have their Chief and its really nice.

I love the sculpt, was the guy posting his fucked up hand up above, just that the figure as a whole is infuriating. It's much like all of McFarlane's figs, one pass away from being great. Engineering real elbows and knees instead of slapping joints on a 3d sculpt like it's 2007 and the sports line. A second gun or fists to give him more play value. Even just some more paint on the awful gun they gave him so it doesn't look like a mushy mess. It's so fucking close to being all I'd ever want, but it's just a lazy waste of a license. Same as with every bethesda toy ever made barring the 3A power armours.
And yeah, 1000toys would be my pick too. Purely because of their toys based on Nihei's stuff. Honestly though I keep wishing that Neca got the license way back. Their stuff is too fragile nowadays, but their old Crysis fig is great, and exactly what I would've wanted in a Doomguy.

I feel though admittedly I don't own too many McFarlane figures (5 total), but the ones I do own have felt the same, I like them but even there are little changes they could do thay would improve them a lot (extra hands or heads for example).

I do find it weird how this line is lacking in demons outside of the Maruader.
When I think of "demon action figures" my mind goes right to McFarlane because stuff like that was right up the companies alley but the line has been almost nothing but Doomguy/slayer and the fact that hasn't killed the line is also surprising to me because I've seen a lot of lines that only make the protagonist die.

With all the gaming figures they were making in the 2000s you'd think they'd make stuff for Doom 3 but I guess nobody approached them for it.

McFarlane was excusable for not having many accessories because of so many unique sculpts, but now other companies are putting out more. Same as with the shoddy paint on alot of figures.

I think this is 50% the demons in the game needing to be huge barring imps and zombies, and Bethesda and Zenimax historically being shit with their licenses. They sell like fucking hotcakes, so there has to be something like the figures not being worth it to them for whatever reason.

To be fair that was 2004 and they weren't really around back then aside from the staction shit. Think it was just the IP being dead for awhile.

What other companies?

The only companies who do mostly unique sculpts are NECA, Mezco, and other collector companies who rightfully charge $25+ for their figures and charge even more becauise they come with extra pieces.

MLs have been doing alot more lately in terms of new sculpts too, albeit now they're doing cancerous multi-pack spam instead of individuals.
I honestly don't see a $3 price difference as big enough to matter in this kind of discussion, but I get why others would. I would honestly be more than fine with Todd raising prices by a few bucks just to get some more paint and more consistent engineering.

Like for sample, a figure with only open palm or trigger hands won't be able to pull off a punch and a head with a somber or emotionless expression will look weird in a fighting pose.
It's not a deal bresker but those additions help in giving you more options for poses if you're concerned with it looking natural.

How new are you?
The shit Hasbro does now is FAR LESS than how it used to be.

Hasbro produces brand new molds for movie/tv series because they're contractually obligated to. This is how it's been since they got the Marvel license in the late 00s and how it's been for Star Wars since at least the prequels.
However, they rolled their movie lines into the generic Marvel Legends/TBS/vintage/etc lines to save money/get more orders. Before, the movie lines had standalone toylines and there were 2-5 waves for every movie. That's 3-6 figures every single wave. So lines like IM2 had a shit ton (30+) of brand new molded figures. Today, at best you'll get 6 figures + maybe a BAF for the movies, AND it replaces a normal wave. Whereas before the ML/MU line was still being released concurrently with the movie lines.

So it really doesn't even compare to what McFarlane is doing, because McFarlane makes brand new molds for 98% of the non-movie figures. Shit doesn't even begin to compare with McFarlane or even how old HAsbro used to do it. And we complained about Hasbro's reuse even back then.

Is this figure good for the price point? Does it have any fragility issues? None of my recent McFarlane stuff has had any problems at all but at this size I know sometimes figures are known for hips and legs breaking.

I'd absolutely recommend it. It's a LOT of fucking toy for the price, and the sheer size and weight of it will make you feel like a kid on christmas morning again. It's the biggest "whoa" moment I've had from a toy in a long time.

No real fragility issues I've heard of, but I have heard of difficulties balancing him due to his huge upper body and digitigrade-ish legs. I personally did not have any issues though. Just counterbalance while posing and you'll be fine I think.

Mcfarlane makes the best megafigures/ bafs IMO. They are reasonably priced as well for the ammount of plastic and detail you get. Violator is a perfect example. Merciless for example is an amazing figure for a BAF.

Darkfather is another BAF I ended up getting because the line had got heavily discounted but hes easily the best figure from his set. Wish they would had just released these as megafigs since I dont they have re released either.

Yes, and on a closer look, you can see that the shirt he wears underneath his chest armor isn't even green, but gray, and a different shade of gray to his helmet/belt/boots too.

In the one death sprite that isn't completely covered in blood, you can also see that he's wearing some kind of a brown fannypack and what looks like some kind of a codpiece.

I wonder how the sprite was originally rendered because at least some of them were sculpted in real world and then photographed and others were illustrated entirely digitally but I forget where the Doomguy himself falls. If there was some kind of a maquette of the original then that'd put this debate to rest. Then again there's nothing stopping the artist from touching the sprite up with different details digitally after the fact either.

got my guy in from the UK. it took so long I forgot I ordered it. while the elbow and knees are disappointing, he can get into some great poses. abcrunch is better than 90% of mcfarts and his legs pose great. there's even a boot swivel that several reviews i watched missed. overall i am not disappointed.

JoyToy is just making better (and much quicker) stuff overall, so I have mostly switched my purchasing over to them. But it can't be denied that Todd did a pretty darn good job on the handful he released, especially the Necron and Nids. I think the Genestealer and Flayed One are two of his very best figures, from any of his lines.

I am not really a 1/18 collector either, but it was surprisingly easy to let go of that in light of how awesome the toys are. I also now agree that it was the right decision, a good balance between being big enough to handle and play with and customize easily, but still small enough to get giant units and vehicles and dreads. It's perfect, really.

In retrospect I would not choose any other way. I too bemoaned the 1/18 choice when it was announced, but those motherfuckers were right and I was wrong. Besides, due to their canonical size, these guys are larger and beefier than any other 1/18 figure I've ever owned, they just feel like a larger scale in-hand.

By themselves (or other 1:18) it's fine I suppose, but a lot of people want to display their marines and what not with their other similarly scaled toys and not start an essentially separate collection/display

McFarlane just needs to step up a bit. Doesn't need to be as diverse, but Terminators, more SM/CSM flavours, and another faction like Eldars would be cool.

McFarlane's SM would probably be about Primarch size in 1:18, but would take quite a bit of effort to deck it out with all the bits and bobs to make it look fancier.
It wouldnt be a stretch to pretend they're Custodes though, and they do go on special missions outside of the imperial palace, so maybe they could wear a normal power armor.

Not really. The Big Three are pushing 1/12 figures closer to $100 apiece these days. You can still to this day get a JoyToy Marine for like $25 if you coupon right and shop the right stores. And yes, they do have more expensive figures, but in those cases you usually get more bang for your buck, like a physically larger build, high-detail paintwork, larger weapons, effect parts, etc.

Nevermind Hiya Toys makes collector quality 5"-6" robots and aliens for $40, with higher quality paint job than JoyToy and just as much articulation, PLUS are actually 1:18 scale.

Imagine if JoyToy actually charged a reasonable price, so i can buy it just about anywhere. instead of your recommended choice of ordering from COVID locked down sketchy Chinese stores, but only on certain dates and times, to coincide with coupons and sales. I'm currently at a month wait time for something to ship because of their recent lock down. Previously ordered from this store too without a problem.
Really hating on relying on overseas shit.

How much do JT's Warhammer figures cost? $42 for regular sized (4.2") Space Marines. As mentioned, a robot Damashii figure is ~$50.
Larger figures (which are 4.5") or those with more accessories are $70-76. This is more than Figuarts and Robot Damashii toys. $76 is only ~$5 less than the MSRP of Figmas and Mafex figures

Their appropriately scaled bulky 5"+ (roughly the size Space Marines should be in 1:18) figures are only $50. You can also buy Hiya's figures from sketchy Chinese stores using coupons just like JoyToy's shit, but no one does, because sketchy Chinese stores are shit and people instead buy Hiya Toys at their leisure anywhere else because they're fairly priced.

Even if pic is 5" (i doubt it, unless Joy Toy cheaped out on the Terminators by making them out of scale with their own Space Marines and they're only 4.5") it's still shorter than every import line that cost nearly as much or cheaper.

sometimes you'll get unlucky and get one with a loose ankle joint, and the norm for these figures are extremely tight joints. So just get it from somewhere you have easy access to returns in case that happens. Otherwise every mega figure I've had was a solid pickup.

The only two I have are Cy-Gor and Violator, and I love them both to death. They are not without their flaws, but they are still some of the coolest toys I've picked up in the US in years. McFarlane has made some incredibly dumbass decisions in the past, but man, when he's on his A-game, he really knows how to make an exciting toy.

I think the color coice really hurt him. Too light, so it feels more cartoony. If they had gone with darker greens and yellows it would've looked more like the old Overtkill "statue" which looked really good.

Man-bat is among my favourites of the megafigs. I recently opened Killer Croc and unfortunately he was a mess. Loose joints (ankles, arms, foot) and his left foot joint was completely broken. Obviously this was bad luck on my part, but it happens.
