I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that this trend started with Star Wars UCS sets (which once again proves that licenseshit ruins everything). Instead of building a toy you're building a model that serves no purpose beyond its displayability. The problem here, of course, is that if you want a very accurate and detailed model, then you can just get... an actual model. It can have more detail, while also being less expensive and smaller (= easier to display) - all because it's not made of Lego pieces.
