I had pic related as a kid. My best friend growing up would come over for New Years and we'd stay up making bugs. Good memories. I know Creepy Crawlers are still a thing, but not with the oven and metal molds.

I had the toy where you could cast matchbox /hotwheels style cars out of colored wax. You plugged it in, and it would heat up a little tub where a wax ingot would melt. It was awesome. kids these days will never know how much fun dangerous toys were.

Toys with spring loaded projectiles. These used to be pretty ubiquitous in the past. From Mattel's vaunted Shogun Warriors, to Lego. But nowadays all toys have simpler, spring less launching mechanisms. I think the 70s were probably rife with examples of exceedingly dangerous toys. My mom said they used to have a vial of mercury in her elementary school that they would unscrew and play with the metal. But I see why the bug maker and easy bake oven are always brought up in these types of threads. A quick search of "dangerous toys of the 70s" gives very mundane things like ka knockers. Which while technically true that they are too dangerous to sell today. Are boring.

That way if a kid gets hurt, it's on the parents and the microwave maker, not you. Good way to cut product costs by using something nearly every household has and pass the buck on liability.

honestly, more of a good idea. A parent has more of a concept that a microwave could be hot and hurt a kid than some vague 'toy' item. So it works out. Glad kids can still make plastic bugs of questionable gel material.

I had that was cool, I miss the smell. Had the metal one, would put small figures in there to give them terminator vibes. Also had one cool set where it used plastic to weld parts together. You could make planes and vehicles with it. Had a blast welding stuff to other figures.

No, parents are just less absent minded about microwaves than toys. A lot of people are stupid enough not to consider that there are toys out there that need adult supervision, but if it needs to use the microwave, either the kid is trusted enough to handle hot microwave ovens themselves or the parents are going to do it for them.

Honestly, it's way cheaper for the manufacturer since there's no electronics involved, and it's also way less of a liability. Parent's can't say "your company sells a toy that can burn children!" when the manufacture can say "why did you let them use the microwave without supervision? The microwave is not a toy."
