ITT: Collector Autism and how you deal with it

What your guy's hard limit on purchases, or do you even have one? Do you buy stuff that you just think looks cool or do you only buy figures from IPs you enjoy? How much of your collection do you honestly enjoy or regret?

Someone is selling my grail at the cheapest I've ever seen it at and I am seriously debating dropping $600 on a piece of plastic and I'm starting to lose control of my autism. I don't buy figures often, usually only a few times a year if that, but my brain logically knows this is stupid as fuck while also wanting it, help.

I don't know what you collect, but as someone who only really buys Hasbro shit with some McFarlane mixed in, it's real easy to put a cap on spending and just accept that they'll probably make this character again sometime and it'll probably be even better than the one I'm debating getting. I only buy characters I like in the costumes I like, usually only one figure per character as well but there are some exceptions with characters that have multiple iconic looks like Wolverine and Spider-Man. My achilles heel seems to be shit on discount. I had no idea who Frog-Man or White Rabbit were until they got figures but they were hard to pass up on ebay for $13. I could've waited to get a new Mando (that will probably come with the Darksaber) but instead I got that ugly credit collection Moff Gideon because it was only $10. I wouldn't say I regret making purchases like that, but I could've definitely lived without 'em.

As for your grail, it really depends on so many things that are personal to you but I have a real hard time thinking of a toy I wouldn't feel absolutely retarded about spending that much money on. That 'new toy' feeling fades so much faster the more money you drop on a purchase.

I don't have a budget but I'm pretty selective about my purchases. I'm fairly proud of my little pile of plastic so I don't have any real regrets other than mmpr lightening collection. Man, it's yr grail. If you can cut enough corners to make it work then do it. I waited close to two years to finally let myself splash out on a $174 transformer, I'm happy I have it even if it's slightly uncomfortable having spent that much.

$600 is pretty insane for any one little toy. If you are wealthy and that amount of money isn't a big deal to you, then maybe it's fine? But if you don't make that much money, it's likely you'll regret it.

Limit the characters/lines you're interested in having a toy of. I watched Xmen and Spiderman in the 90s but that doesn't mean I would even enjoy watching said cartoons today and don't bother to buy Xmen or Spiderman figures.

Evaluate a release when its announced to decide if it's good enough to buy and set a price you think is reasonable for it. For must have's its MSRP, for maybe or marginal, set a sale price and only buy if it hits close to that, otherwise, pass on it.

Depending on what it is, just buy it, honestly. I regret passing up my grails I hesitated on. STILL looking for a sentinel Giant Gorg after passing it up at a reasonable price. Unless its some mass release figma or otherfigure from the last 15 years you missed out on but was a wide release, you just can't find anywhere else. Then maybe consider passing.

I have money I put aside for selfish purchases, dropped almost 2k AUD on Beast Wars Transformers recently and still don't regret it. I think making a couple of large or high quality purchases is superior to buying more or settling for crap. My collection is hard limited by my display capacity, anytime I want to get something I have to sell to make room. Buying higher quality items also means if/when you sell its easier and more likely to be at a profit which I think is important to sustaining the hobby longterm

It can be helpful to pick favourites until your displays are comfortably filled and then move the rest to storage. Give it a few weeks then sell anything you don't miss from storage. Use sales and put money into that separate mojo account for toy purchases and suddenly it's a controlled demolition of your finances.

The vicious cycle of preorders definitely makes it easy to blow out your spending and denies you the dopamine reward until too late. I write on a calendar and keep a list of what I've got preordered, what's pending and when releases are. The running tally helps.

It really depends on what your poison is though.

Mostly the same five IPs, two of which are very slow. I've bought one Transformer in the last like seven years. I can't afford a new IP, especially that one.

I have one big display that I actively maintain and appreciate. The rest are small shelves I never do anything with. Most of my collection is in bins. I don't regret any of it.

You should gain control of how you allow yourself to be affected by the word "autism." I don't know that there are autistic people with the presence of mind to question a large purchase and consult others about it.

I don’t buy anything unless it fits the goal of the collection or if I don’t find the design or character interesting. I find keeping the initial idea small reigns in what I want, and ranking their importance helps when I’m waffling on an impulse buy of a figure that’s just “iffy” for my goals and tastes.

For example, I could have pre-ordered Figuarts Raimi Spidey, but I decided to wait after finding out he's getting a stateside release, meaning that I could get him at any time and can stack my money in the meantime.

The regret isnt as bad as having that thought of maybe buying shit in your head. This only happened to me like thrice and monetarily isnt so bad.

first time I experimented with multiple lines, Neca, playmates, figuarts, figma, etc. now I only collect Marvel Legends. I got myself a sizeable comic and movie universe. sold the rest to get some grails like the walgreens F4 and the 80th anniversary Avengers.

now deep into phase 4 and complete teams, I'm only collecting female and black characters since they're so underepresented, but even still I limit my purchases due to available cash, I got Shuri and Jen but now I can't get Riri or Spiral. I'll probably get both later since I can confidently skip the Quantumania wave until the Marvels comes out because I want them all.
