Having not had the original astrotrain of it, i really love this mold, the transformations are crazy easy for a triple changer, all of them look solid, and the clean white and black colour scheme looks really good, big fan of the head too

The stupid caboose/landing platform thing is wasted space imo but whatever, its a very pretty blue and silver at least. Can't say the same for these cheap ass looking red assorted guns, some have cool molding but this colour looks so cheap

I really need to get some flight stands, this guy begs to be doing hovering blaster poses

This is my problem with it too, Astrotrain's are molded in black so you can give them to other figures but Galaxy Shuttle's look ugly as hell in bright red.

I'd love to get some new original toyline in that vein. every so often some indie toy company does something SORT OF neat, but they typically miss the point hard. They don't push the proportions enough or include creative enough accessories

The red guns and the landing pad are colored as an homage to the Rocket Base, which the original Galaxy Shuttle was designed to interact with.
So presumably Hasbro's idea is for you to put them on the Galactic Odyssey modulator base.

I love me some Core class but I do wish every release could be as good as the Pretenders. Having articulation all the way to their ankle rockers is so good and when other Core don't have it (which no other do) it sometimes feels like it's missing.

I got Jhiaxus and Tarantulas a week ago but really only got hands on them the last two days. They suck! Tarantulas is the most 5/10 who fucking cares Transformer, only with an annoying transformation, tons of hollowness and a general cheap feeling overall experience. Jhiaxus has a 10/10 bot mode and a 0/10 alt mode, with the second gun feeling like an insult when I also have chipped paint on his face right out of the box.
Legacy has fucking sucked so far.

A small haul for TFs this Christmas, but I'd say all of these guys are worth their buck. Occasional lack of waist swivels and rising prices are a bit disappointing, but these are well worth their buck. Hoping I can find core Soundwave for cheap, or else I'll have to settle for Soundblaster. Merry Christmas, tfg!

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the entire schtick to why Kingdom Ultra Magnus came with his shortcomings because of budget reasons?
That's just going to lead to SS86 Magnus to being what the Kingdom version should've been (likely changes are going to be the armor legs so they're not forever slanted and actual car carrier functionality, but it's still going to be a partsformer like the Seige/Kingdom mold)

If they reuse the same mold I expect exactly the same with barely any changes. We'll be lucky if they manage to hide the white Optimus arms better in vehicle mode

well it depends heavily on what you're into, but override has the most solid appeal in my opinion, other than beast guys which are my favorite.
Override's fuckin cool in both modes, looks like a proper videogamey warrior robot and a cool fast car.. hasbro's trying to make it a girl but the design is for a male japanese character, so you can do whichever you want.
the upcoming Tarn also looks really good.
People are also raving about some of the core-class pretenders like Iguanus and bomb-burst, and I have to agree they are fun little dudes. but again I like beast guys, so vehicle-monster transformers are obviously going to appeal to me more than 'normal robot turns into a truck'

Yeah, the designers stated they wanted to use the ER Optimus mold and attach armor to it to make it Ultra Magnus but budget wouldn't allow that so they instead retooled the Siege mold. I imagine since they're going Commander Class with more money, they might revisit that idea.

This is the only one I feel like it doesn't matter. If that shit is past page 5 or so and not bumping any more, I say abandon it. Only if there was a hot conversation going on that would be lost in a thread change would I say keep it going, but nobody wants to scroll down past page 5 onwards even with the catalog regardless of if it's slow board.

The people that grew up with G1 had to wait until they were in their mid 20s to get a MP Prime and all the G1 stuff that started pouring in 2000~2003. Euro, G2, BWs hardly get any level of attention compared to the others. Hell getting an update modern version of all 12 BW Season 1 cast these past few years took almost 27 years. To give context 27 years after G1 you had 12 reimaginings of just G1 Prime just starting in 2003, so not even counting G2.

My only minor problem with Sludge is that they used more softer plastic with him so he doesn't feel as good in hand, and I wish Slag's backpack was more securely attached to his back (not like it moves on my copy, but still). It's not like Grimlock is without fault with those hollow forearms, either.

They're very minor issues to me. They looks great together and are good toys with very nice robot modes and chunky, charming dino modes. Not worried at all about Snarl and Swoop ending up being terrible.

Funny, I think the complete opposite. I don't care at all about Megatron because his back kibble is one of the most ugly ones I've even seen as of late due to overdesigning an already fine transformation for no good reason. Tarantulas is a solid, clean toy and the transformation is a breeze after you get the hang on how to move things around so they don't interfere. I really dig how the robot feet get into position and attach by themselves inside the spider's abdomen when you fold the robot legs.

Totally agree with you about Tarantulas, that toy is a delight. I cannot agree about Megatron though, he's designed the way he is for a very good reason and I just can't consider his transformation as overdesigned when it is in service of such fantastic articulation in dino mode. The engineering on that toy is astounding for a mainline Transformer, like the way the back kibble is on a slider so it moves with the dino hips, giving you full range of motion, that's genius design (for a transformer)
Kingdom Megatron is one of the most posable dinosaur toys ever... and it transforms into a robot, how can you not be impressed by that?

I guess I'm too used to the original toy lack of hip movement in dinosaur mode for it to bother me all that much and how beautiful and clean the Masterpiece is. Probably the most impressive-looking Transformer I own, that paintjob is a delight and is full of character.

Nonetheless I'm sure the Kingdom one is an enjoyable figure, and maybe I would have been tempted to buy one if I saw it in the wild. But I wasn't impressed at all by it.

It looks pretty unsightly even looking at the figure from the front, it doesn't matter what you do with the thigh pieces.
The original toy had huge kibble but wasn't a mess of layers, the Masterpiece had layers but the kibble ended up being really small. Then the Kingdom one gets the worst of each and ends up with a massive mess of panels.
The rest of the figure doesn't look all that good either. The dino head arm looks more like a sock puppet than ever and the fat jointed tail fails to look like a sharp lance/pincer. And the new transformation makes the yellow parts end up in weird places and even changes the shape of the shoulderpads.

And all of that for a dinosaur mode that isn't all that realistic anyways. I wish they just made an smaller, simplified version of the MP with bigger but cleaner back kibble panels instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

What I'll say is that I thought the Kingdom Megs looked kinda terrible in the promo pics with all that kibble and only picked it up on a whim after my best friend seemed to be having a ball with it.
In hand I absolutely love it; the robot looks like a right old warlord of a thing and the dino is like an articulated version of my old Kenner JP T Rex
Thanks to a couple of decent sale prices I now also have the other two versions and can happily tell you I regret nothing.

I always thought the mold looked really cool specifically BECAUSE it had such a classics vibe. It's just a fun, chunky jet-bot with ankle tilts, and a pretty clean alt mode for a jet. I would have picked it up if I ever saw it in person, but lol.

Yes, it has seveal problems even if you don't compare it to Siege Starscream:

-Poor articulation for a modern figure.
-Pelvis section having that flap at all when they could have integrated it to the hips like they did a year before, or done them like Siege Prime.
-Torso proportions are terrible. Too big and boxy, the classic figure nailed this so I'm not sure what happened there. The tordo also looks unfinished after transformation, with bits sticking out of it ackwardly.
-Head is painted, transformation can cause chipping, an issue that the classic didn't have.

The one good thing I can say is that the headsculpt and null rays look great, the rest is trash.

Many pieces of Sludge use softer plastic. Never noticed how soft his knee ratchets are compared to the other two, or the different feel on some parts like the black upper legs? That's because of the different plastic used. It isn't bendy, rubbery plastic, but it clearly isn't hard and smooth like ABS ot whatever the other two (or Sludge's own dino head) use.

If we're taking about feeling cheaper Sludge is the clear winner. But I still think is a very good toy and doesn't bother me at all. Really like all three of them and I hope they reveal something about the missing two soon.

So anons what are your last purchases of 2022 before 2023 arrives? Distribution is fucked here in Australia, never saw anything beyond Wave 1 in general stores. Big W was lucky with Wave 2 but most of the things I had to get was from JBHIFI of all places, an electronics store that has now opened up to selling movies eventually games and eventually toys.

I really hope Minicons are back, from the left to right, Fracas, Peacemaker, Sonar/Shuttler, Jetstorm/Mach and Runaway/Jetter. Got them from Mandarake and they cost me so much for how little they are but they are already leagues better than the shitty Micromasters from Generations whose articulation barely improved and weapon modes that requires cope and imagination to make them anywhere near good (apart from the Air Strike Patrol, Soundwave's Cassettes and the 2 Micromaster combiner weapon team, they're fine).

20 years and we only got smaller, fun fact this particular Air Defense Minicon team is not the Armada or Legends of the Micron toy but it's a Candy toy by Kabaya. It is the only way you will get the team in the original colours and with normal plastic rather than the brittle translucent plastic. Despite the plastic quality feeling a little bit cheap due to being a candy toy it is the same size and identical to the regular version despite apparently being an all new mold set with functioning Minicon ports and no doubt is far more durable in the long run.

Minicons are at their greatest when they transform into a weapon. I really like the weapon mode both Fracas and Peacemaker transforms into. Thinking of keeping Peacemaker to Red Alert since both share similar colours and occupation as a rescue worker. As for Fracas I'm waiting on Legacy Hot Shot who will show up here in February, his missile pod mode really reminds me of Hot Shot's engine blaster and the colour scheme is almost the same too. It will match him perfectly.

Not the one used in transformers, that's for sure. Translucent plastics always have more problems when they had to withstand pressure over a long time. Ball joint sockets made of clear plastic or pinned joints where the pic is a tad too thick develop cracks way more easier than regular plastic for whatever reason. The theory can say whatever, I'm basing this on my own experience as someone who owns almost 400 of these things and has always been very careful when handling my toys.

It's not just the transformations; they have some utterly fantastic alt-modes for the scale, too, with a general ethos towards only being willing to compromise in the robot mode.
With the brand leaning towards ever more exacting recreations of existing character models, getting into a series of non-homage Transformers (outside of a few recolours) that put both transformation and alt-mode front and centre was honestly a treat.

That, to me, is what sets minicons apart from other, small transformers. While not every one was like this, a lot of Armada minicons had tube arms, wheel feet, bizarre proportions, weird faces--basically, they look like really classic sci-fi robots, more Robby the robot or roboforce than super robot. Stuff that would look bizarre(or Vehicon) on a full size figure.
Where as, Micromasters are just small traditional Transformers.

I think all minicons are great because they weren't afraid to be experimental. Funky designs and transformation schemes everywhere, and the occasional flop could be carried by the other ones in the set.
I just wish so many of the classics molds weren't so prone to breaking. I love the designs but generally feel safer actually transforming my Armada minicons.

I will never understand how mainline Armada stuff was so bricky and awful, regardless of gimmicks, and the Minicons were so good. It's like the team in charge of RiD01's toys got thrown onto the Minicons and the oldest men Takara emplyed did the actual figures.

A lot of Armada's figure budgets got sucked into the mincion activated gimmicks. Lots of extra springs, pins, and surprisingly complex (almost clockwork-like) assemblies. Not to mention needing to make sure the gimmicks themselves would actually work with the figure's articulation. There was an early hotshot prototype with full articulation but it looked horrific and didn't tab together well.
The minicons themselves were free to just be tiny robots.

The whole design pathos of Armada was dictated by a few things.
Takara for all the years in BW was presenting a bunch of gimmick engineering ideas(as much as people like to think it was Hasbro dictating gimmicks, a lot of it was Takara engineers wanting it too) that were just impossible to pull off on the BW toys because they were too thin on average. This is why Armada toys felt so bricky.
Plus when they did all the kids test groups they seemed to like the RiD Combaticons over other RiD toys(this is why they got a bunch of redecoes)

Off the top of my head I've had 3 copies of the classics firetruck, and on all of them one of the hip balljoints seized up and sheared off. On the police car mold, the pins that hold the torso pieces together are in too thin of a plastic, and eventually the pin holes crumble. Had 2 do that. I don't know about plastic composition and the same can be said about the armchair plastic chemists that post here on /toy/, but what I know is what I have experienced for decades. Your "evidence" means nothing when I can clearly see the cracks on my RID Vehicons pinned clear parts, BW Inferno clear red elbow joints, Car Robots Prowl door ball sockets, Armada Star Saber handle piece and Classics Bumblebee hairline crack in the middle of the windshield due to how it connects in robot mode. And that's just from the top of my head. I don't know why it happens, but clear plastic has been consistently shit at withstanding tension for long periods of time, and nothing you can say is going to make me think otherwise.

I think it tells how outside the box those minicons got when they'd be frequently mistransformed despite the complete lack of steps in their transformation, because they just put "humanoid shape" at the very bottom of the totem pole. Weirdly I grew up in the perfect era to be saturated with gimmicks on my toys but I just didn't own any that much. Most were just regular action figures and the few things that were gimmicky fit the character in non obtrusive ways (like a Wolverine with retractable claws), or were from a time when 5poa was the standard and not the exception. Toys with spring fired missiles, lights and sounds, those barely ever happened in my house. The only time I really recall one was us having the original Buzz Lightyear and that one "worked" for me because it was all stuff the character was supposed to do in my head. But divorced of the media I don't know how much ooh and aah I'd get out of things like MEGATRON ATTACK or disc launching Depth Charge being a tripod or axelzookas. By time Armada was wrapping up I was already an adult and old and Hasbro was marketing to me directly with Alternators and G1 reissues.

I'm sure I had a touch of the tism as a kid since I cared a ton about articulation over all else, but maybe that's because I got some really early MSIA toys from Victory as well as the late G2 balljointed stuff and early BW as my formative toys. I fucking despised gimmicks if they took away from playability, and recall being vividly angry that my Buzz had joints sculpted that weren't actually joints. Like I would ask my dad specifically to get me toys that I could PLAY with and avoided things without much posability specifically. Remember the early toy biz marvel figures blowing my dick off and stuff like Build King and JRX being able to have actual combiner chunks be real toys was astounding. Transformers Generations Thrilling 30s Sandstorm

Honestly a big glow-up from his original look.

At the quickest of glances one might sign Sandstorm off as Springer's player 2 palette swap.
But beyond the mustardy tones you'll notice first of all the gigantic rear tires that stick Sandstorm out not just from Springer's shadow but also from pretty much every other toy on your shelf.

Beyond that he's swapped out the Springer's rear fins for armored up roof and windows and snuck on different front fenders to added a tougher bumper.
The big rear tires can feel a bit rickety, what with their size being held on with one small pin. They have no trouble rolling. In fact, something about the angle the car sits at makes it feels like a it carries momentum better that one would think.

I'm just glad Takara's designers got back on track after Armada because while the later UT stuff had issues, none of it was as bad as that. Sucks too having fantastic concepts like Sideways and great designs like Blurr stuck over there. Chaning Sandstorm from a regular helicopter to a twin rotor VTOL was the right move in my opinion.
It's a great way to allow both vehicle mode to stand out.

Like most flying alt modes though this one is just the robot mode lying down with alt mode stuff draped on top. He's less transformed now than he was a moment ago. But I'll hand it to the designers, the only piece of dune buggy bleeding over here are the front fenders.

Coming right at and saying it; I like T30 Sandstorm more than T30 Springer. More clever, more unique, and (at least on my copies) holds together way better too.

AoE and TLK were just extensions of the movie toys failing to move the needle and them putting as little effort in as possible. Beast Wars was clearly stated to be a part of G1, whether it was directly tied to the cartoon or the Marvel comics it was up to the viewers interpretation but it's a part of G1 regardless. And having been set centuries or so after the fact, the name reusuage makes so much sense there. Bits naming themselves after the ones they look up to like Optimus Primal and Megatron. Inferno is probably the same since he was a maximal protoform. Armada has no excuse for this, they're not tied to G1 and is a complete reboot in a sense so it would make more sense to have new bots created with new names. Robot mode, like I alluded to, is justthe helicopter standing up and throwing all the stuff on his back.

Barring the backpack this mode is probably the one that bares the strictest resemblance to Springer. With just the head swapped out and the shoulders unable to flare.
I just really like the look of this guy. the worst you can say about him is that maybe his les are a bit skinny.

Haven't mentioned Sandstorm's gun yet. Happily plugs into the top of either vehicle and both of his fists.
It's a push missile but not one that I'm bummed about. the gun fits nicely between your fingers and the tension gives the missile a decent launch too.

A couple of ankle tilts and Sandstorm would be able to dance with the best of the modern day toys as far as posability goes.
His head is on a ball joint with a good range of up and down movement.
Shoulders are on a ball and hinge. Swiveling biceps are connected to ratcheting elbows. Fists rotate and have a bit of inward flex too.

Waist and thighs swivel and the hips are on universal joints. The knees are on very clicky ratchets, maybe even too strong for the toy.
The one bummer I have is that his feel and heels are pretty loose now. Getting him just to stand was a challenge, but some floor polish should see to that.

The only character in Beast Wars who that is relevant to is Megatron, he's the only one explicitly stated to have taken his name from the original. The problem with /toy/ is that it's a slow but dedicated board. The average thread lasts a week to a month, and the average poster sticks around here because there is literally nowhere else to discuss toys without having to dickride the companies making them. We've got the retrospammer who appears and disappears and does the same thing. We had Athena and now have someone pretending to be him. We have subjectanon and diosoth and numerous other easily identifiable fucks who exist purely to make discussion here impossible, because they know that they're free here.
I'll probably be banned for criticizing the mods which happens constantly on here too, and seems to be the only thing you get banned for, but fuck it. Like yes we all know pre-2013 /toy/ was much better than now, but the last 3 years have been a fucking nightmare and it's all because the mod team does not spend time here and does not understand board culture

I've lost track of the threads again. This is what I got over the xmas period, t'was my Birthday on the 27th too. With wave 3 of legacy not being out in time in the UK I asked for some kingdom/Studio Series I missed - gotta say love everything, this is my first instance of the Sideswipe mould, understand his popularity now. Love Maxiwarps headsculpt too. Wheelie, Spike and Smashdown are heaps of fun. Only disappointment is Arcee. She really needs a voyager class budget, would though she'd got the flip out pink shades but nah. She's a flimsy bish. Still better looking than the WFC one, but still might end up picking up a version of the T30 mould, she is still pretty easy to get in the UK for some reason.
