So with our 19th Groupbuild coming to a close, we now approach the 20th. Since it's a bit of a milestone and I've been running these for a little over 6 years now, I felt that we should do something a little special this time around. Instead of the typical structure of taking ideas from the posters ITT and polling them to decide what theme to do for the next few months, we're going to have something I'm gonna call the "Groupbuild Groupbuild". The rules are as follows:
>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.

The plastic is harder so don't use expensive nippers on it. You can get away with less cleanup because the transparency makes everything look so cluttered and shiny that nub marks are easier to miss. Some colors look shittier than others too but if you saw the promo pics I assume you don't mind the color of the transparent Crossbone.

Are there any gundams that are cheaper or much easier to get in Japan versus the US? I have room in my luggage for one more smallish box and I'm getting these for a friend who is into gundam. I already have:

there's one in Odaiba, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Kyoto.

For example, these two kits are only available to get in Gundam Base in Fukuoka

What's yalls go to non-glass file sanding tools? I've been buying these tear drop shaped ones on Amazon, but they only come in multi-grit packs. I burn through the 600-1000 grit ones much faster than the 180, 400, and 1200+ grits. So I have like 8 of some grits and 2 of others. Looking to switch to another type that I can buy single grits.

i just buy packs of the specific grit sandpapers i need. i don't bother with gluing it to sticks or sponges, if i need a large flat surface filing down level like when puttying i use a bastard file then clean up the scratches with the sandpaper

probably the year I learnt the most in, think I can stop considering myself a beginner modeler now.
I originally wanted to spend a lot of time this year exploring models from other manufacturers but the only new ones touched was tamiya and finished my first kotobukiya models, and a lot of kotobukiya. pleasantry surprised by their quality.
onto 2023 it is.

Making progress, the dust from using the Raser Plus gets everywhere. Haven't used any of the blue parts yet but was thinking of getting some top coat and spraying all the blue parts with it to give it some depth.

I was kind of expecting an expert/detailed kit, like you have to put each transistors on the pcb part or like each part is color separated, but no, each part is like a slab of plastic.

not even stickers for the chips/transistors.

the only stickers are for labels.

Am I missing something with mixing paint?
I've got some Mr Hobby Aqueous coming in, and I figure I can use a dropper tool (or a couple if I don't want to clean it too constantly) to get colors onto my palette and add thinner from there, but a friend of mine says they use some mixing dropper bottles from The Army Painter and have to add mixing balls and shit. Is that just for people who want to hold onto a color and don't want to keep mixing the same ratios over and over? And what are those mixing balls even?

I wouldn't. But aside from painting what frame might exist inside, you COULD paint the backside of each part silver, to give it an internal shine with a clear layer overtop. It's kind of a neat look if you pull it off right.

They're a lot more effort than most kits. Lots to paint, lots of seamlines, and the biggest thing: they're not really tied to a big current thing. Hell of an experience finishing one though, even for those who just snapfit it. Lovely series though, yeah
This one is still a holy grail build for me, for when I feel like I've gotten good enough to do it justice.

I buy Gundam models because they only need basic tools and come pre coloured and don't need glue.

Starting out, I'd snap together a bunch of stuff. After starting to paint and seeing how fast topcoat goes away, I tend to just buy less kits and do a simple topcoat + panel line, so I can understand the sentiment. Different parts of the hobby have their own appeal.
Koto kits always get the paint treatment, but mostly because they look awful without it. But like a HG? They don't need as much. As a hobby, it's best to just take it as far as you want, but it's fun to shoot the shit.

Agreed, Bandai kits have pretty great color separation these days. Easily able to snap and pose and looks good on a shelf. Looking at moving into a bigger house in the next few years, a climate controlled garage is on the list I want so I can have a place to set up a painting station. Where I live temperatures range from 100F in the summer to -30F in the winter, with humidity as bad as Florida to desert dry. Not ideal for an airbrush.

A decent knife is like 10ish bucks off Amazon, a tamiya hobby knife. You can get cheapo Godhands for sprue clipping also for like 10. Then all you need is some sandpaper or files of various grits, which can run from 5 to 30 bucks, depending on what you get or like.

The good Godhands are like 50 and are amazing but figure out how much you like the hobby before you really splurge.

If it's Perfect Grade then some top coat and water slides are perfectly fine to use.

If it's anything below that then you don't need anything extra other than a nipper, knife and nub sander. I found some god hands for sale in a store in Osaka but didn't jump on them. Not sure I need them when I use Raser Origin/Plus.

I mean my desk isn't very nice to begin with and already had some cuts on it before hand.
Just had some nail clippers laying around for the gate cuts.
This model was a gift from my brother since I was telling him I was interested in getting a gunpla like we used to build as kids.
Probably going to get more though, was a really nice experience the last couple of days getting it together, not sure how much I want to dig deep into it with painting and stuff but it was fun.
I really don't have the space to set up a proper work station or display area right now since I am planning on moving anyway soon.

Only issue I had with this one was trying to get the eye sticker on and the left arm is very loose and kept falling out of the socket at the shoulder.

Honestly just get the Bandai beginner Gunpla ones. Theyre like 6 bucks at Target and will do you just fine. I've been building for a longtime now and I've been pretty satisfied with just getting a new 10 dollar pair every few years, I've not been sold on these fancy godhands myself.

I'm new to this, and I've come to the conclusion that I might be slightly retarded. The first model I've done, I've hiroshimafied the nubs. The results were... subpar, to say the least - I've used low grit paper and despite oversanding, the nubs were still visible and I could feel them with my fingernail. Then I tried a different strat - when the nubs were still visible, I switched to higher grit paper. First 1k, then 2k. Suddenly, no visible nubs and smooth surfaces. Why does this work? Isn't it logical to expect a lower grit paper to smooth out the surface properly? Why did higher grit work for me when the lower failed? I don't get it.

Try investing in some nippers and a hobby blade and some grits of sandpaper (120 up to 2000) to help clean up the nub marks that are left over from cutting the pieces out.

I'm not going to deny that /m/'s GPG is full of shitposting, but if what you're saying is really the case then why is it that every time I look over at the /m/ GPG their threads are 800+ posts riddled with repeated arguments about nubs and painting and shitting on various scales and the usual lot while the Gunpla generals here are far more chill asides from the occasional /m/ runoff that gets ignored/reported pretty quickly? I practiced on some plastic coins and it turned out fine. Went to the real thing and got killed by my nerves. Thankfully, it was a Hexa Gear I wanted to use as practice, but I still feel pretty bad about it. Biggest trouble is making sure every area has an even coat, had trouble with some of the inner crannies not getting paint.

Never been interested in mechs, until very recently, and I've been having the urge to build something, so I thought I'd try my hand at Gunpla.
Is pic related a good way to start? Don't want to spend too much, since I'm just starting out, and this one looks pretty cool. Any input on a better set to start with is more than appreciated.

You can just use a pencil instead. itll look better and you probably have one already. .5mm is best, though .3 can do tighter areas that youd only be able to get with a wash, but it is far more delicate.

1. Use good tape (Tamiya, Creos).
2. Run something hard (but not sharp) along the edge of the tape to make sure it sticks to the surface.
3. Reinforce tape with masking fluid to stop it from peeling
4. Never spray under the edge of the tape, always away from the edge.

I almost feel bad for chinks. Ordered something on AliExpress, next day decided nevermind, requested cancelation, the seller declined it. Requested it again, declined. Repeat 4 more times. Ships it anyway. Gets stuck in customs. Call CC company. Get money back. 3 months later its still in customs, all because the bugman didn't accept cancelation, he's out money and product.

i think its the head is putting me off. I don't like it. its too derpy, just like the G-self head.

even G-studio made a scratch built MG Aerial can't fix the Aerial's derpy head
