what's the best lego set for a beginner? I want to get a pack that has pieces that don't constrict you to building just one thing like a car or a plane or something

This was my very first Lego set along with several of the el cheapo dollar boxes of cavalrymen and horses to build up a convoy. Later came the Sioux sets to raid the convoy. Easy enough set.

I'd buy a set so you can get a good variety of pieces and see how they all interconnect. The Creator 3 in 1 Line is really excellent because it gives you fairly versatile pieces that make multiple models at a fairly good price.

I'd recommend getting some Creator sets (can't go wrong with them) and some Classic/Creative sets of random assorted blocks.

I just bought a Lego Classic box for 40 bucks. This is my first attempt at building with Lego. There should be tiny flowers below the window but I can't be bothered to find such tiny pieces. I'm getting old and my sight isn't what it used to be.

I bought this set recently and it didn't have this element. It's still on box art, but not on instruction or part list. I'm assuming Lego changed it ower the years and didn't bother to update the box.
