So with our 19th Groupbuild coming to a close, we now approach the 20th. Since it's a bit of a milestone and I've been running these for a little over 6 years now, I felt that we should do something a little special this time around. Instead of the typical structure of taking ideas from the posters ITT and polling them to decide what theme to do for the next few months, we're going to have something I'm gonna call the "Groupbuild Groupbuild". The rules are as follows:
>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.

I've had Nightingale sitting around forever (he's big and daunting), I got Phenex gold coating for Christmas, Woundwort came in yesterday, RG Sazabi, RG Zeong, MG GM Sniper II, Shin Musha Gundam, HG Kshatriya (also a bit daunting), and HG Hi-Zack.

I actually just finished building mine, just haven't done the decals yet. It's a fun build and looks good with really minimal effort. I'm also impressed by how stable it is, but I guess that's not unexpected since it doesn't have a big backpack or anything to mess that up.

My brother just gave me a nipper and a set of files. This build came out nice.
He has a collection of paints too, I am not at the point as of yet where I incorporate it into my builds.
Hopefully when I move I can have a nice room to work on these some more.
I tried an anons suggestion on using a pencil on the visor since I literally can't use the provided stickers. Maybe if I had a harder graphite than 02 it would look great.

Also for cleaning files for longevity, I am guessing a soft toothbrush would be the best bet?
I used the flat one a lot for this HG build and there is a lot of plastic sitting on it. I don't have access to an air compressor right now.
What I did notice, I barely used my knife on it using proper tools whereas my first build I was cutting a lot with my razor.

Did my first real attempt at weathering via dry brushing.

Think I did pretty alright on the chest plate and jetpack, but not happy with how the helmet came out.

It's alright, it might get a lil bit floppy if you pose it around a lot. But it can do most sword fighting poses you want, just be carefull with nipping out the sword or have a chrome paint marker handy

Generally, unless you want to touch up bits to have different finishes in different areas, yes.
It's a bad idea.

And even then, you can always just throw a finish over it via a spray end just use a gloss or anything else where needed to touch it up with a brush on.

What is your favorite MG or 1/100 kit?

For me its the 2.0 frame Providence Gundam.

Yeah its mostly a brick and Im not even that big a SEED fan but I just love the look of this kit, the way its designed just makes it feel powerful as fuck.

i've only done three master grades (ground GM, Dom 1.5, GM 2.0) but out of all of them my favorite is the GM 2.0. it has a really cool inner frame with moving pistons in most of the joints, and it feels really sturdy no matter what pose it's in. really makes me wish the ground GM got the same 2.0 treatment

I am more worried about the letters disappearing under the layer of surfacer.

As for the scene, there is a ton of free STLs out there for all kinds of shit, starting from furniture (here comes my 1/25 Yui diorama) and landscape elements all the way to cars and tanks and bishoujo figures.
At this point the printer is an alternative way to make kits for me to build. I don't think I'll be using it too often, but who knows.

I'm building the HGUC Custom Gouf and used plastic cement to fuse the ankles and shoulderpieces together, then sanded it off - and while it's kinda smooth to the touch after sanding it LOOKS scuffed as hell.

if i prime it and then paint it will it still look scuffed? or will the paint not stick to it right or something??

Should be fine, most the scuffs will be hidden inder the paint but yes, any texturestanding out will show, but if it feels smooth it should be totally fine. Speaking of fine, try to go over the whole surface with a fine 2000 grit paper, very lightly. Tends to help the paint stick. Maybe wipe down the parts well if you handled them bare handed. Let the paint dry before moving it but let it cure at least a day or more before assembling or doing topcoats. Other than that keep a little distance from the parts and the spray nozzle and do thin coats. Try to get an even and wet look but dont overspray it. Its all about getting the right feel for things. Dont be afraid to experiment a little.

Thank you!! For reference here's the part: it *feels* smooth but it's so obviously fucking scuffed from trying to sand off the plastic cement.

I also heard that there are some paints that are primer-less (like GPaint) but I'm wonder if I should even bother - I've heard that primer can "smooth out" the part so not only does it stick better but it gives it a better texture (but i don't know if that's actually true or not, and whether primer-less paints would "smooth it out" or not).

Also ignore the black marks: I tried to panel-line the grooves before painting (and then erase it and re-do it after painting) because I was really curious how easy or hard they'd be to line. Apparently the ink from those pour-type gundam markers somehow seeped into the area where the plastic cement had been (even tho it was long dried) and became impossible to come out. No solvent or sanding I did could get that shit off, so hopefully the paint covers it up.

Yeah you over sanded a bit but not that bad. Itll paint over fine. Keep a light pressure when sanding. You dont want to reshape the part. Light pressure will still sand the target spot but wont hit the surrounding area as harsh. Dont worry about it too much and learn from it.

First i tried using a glass file, then tried 600->800->1000->2000 grit sandpaper to try and get the plastic cement off.

the thing that made me oversand it in the first place, was the very moment I began sanding it with the 600grit, it looked super scuffed, and i was trying to smooth it out to get rid of it (it did not go away). i wonder if i should rub the ENTIRE shoulder with 2000grit sandpaper next time to even it out, OR just trust the topcoat evens it out and just not worry if it looks scuffed pre-topcoat/pre-paint??

That said, from the side it doesn't look that oversanded- the top of the Gouf's shoulder isn't that round to begin with so I don't think you'd really notice it too much (or is this copium)

I don't know what you mean by "super scuffed" but maybe you're just using sandpaper that is not fit for this hobby that leaves deep scars even at 600 grit, chances are that you are just underestimating the leveling properties of good paint as you haven't even tried to apply primer yet.

Grit is not really important, pic related was sanded with 400grit stick and nothing else. You don't need grits below 400-600 if you are going to prime and paint.
The important part is not to sand curved surfaces with hard sticks, you need to use soft sticks or sponges that hug the surface.

Depends. Most people use a gloss coat then do the decals, then semi gloss or matte on top to finish. You can put the decals on the plastic too then topcoat, but you want to topcoat so the decals dont chip or fall off.

Like sandpaper theres essentially different "grit" primers. Some are coarser and are more durable and fill in parts better and others are more fine and very thin and smooth. If you're ever painting though always use a primer dont ever use the primer+paint garbage or listen to people that say you shouldn't prime.

honestly the only difference between HG, MG, and RG is time, any kit from the last ~10 years is going to be competent and the only true difference is how many parts there are, it's not more complicated

you lacking skills won't break it unless you do something stupid like cut right against the kit with cheap nippers or use the wrong type of paint on certain types of plastic (certain paint or ink on ABS plastic could crack it, chemically)

that said, if it's a model kit that you REALLY care about, your lack of skills will make it not look as good as it possibly could be. if you learn how to do waterslides, panel lining, painting, using plastic cement to cover seam lines, it might look better. it's up to you if you want to learn how to make really nice looking shit before you build this one

TL;DR: do it, it's not hard, and you'll get bored if you pick a kit you don't care about just to "practice"

most chromes are very durable and won't scratch easily so yes most people don't gloss coat them, but you can protect most of them with alclad aqua gloss or vallejo polyurethane gloss without losing much of the mirror effect.
lacquer metallics are also pretty durable and don't really need a gloss coat most of the time

you should be able to get mr metal primer or tamiya metal primer easily. i believe both come in spray cans as well as jars. others to look for are hobbymio hmt-10, gaia multiprimer, and finishers multiprimer. as far as i know those ones don't come in spray cans and only come in jars for airbrushing

Just so you understand, painting soft plastic like PVC is a losing game no matter what primer you use.
If you flex the part (e.g. open the hand to put a weapon in it), the paint will likely crack and chip even if the primer does not. You need to put a VERY thin paint coat to avoid that (to a degree).

yes, metal primer is for painting on metal. lacquer thinner keys into most plastics commonly used in model kits and bonds the paint to it, but that doesn't happen with metal.
it can also be used to prime other materials that don't take paint well, like pe (polycaps)/pvc/pom

My guide is always just look at the box. the last 4 or 5 digits of the serial number is the price in yen.

for example, this MG Exia. On the box, is a serial number. the last for digits is 3800. so Exia is 3800 yen. I baseline convert 100 yen to 1 USD. so, a good asking price for the MG Exia is 38 USD. of course some stores will have some overhead, so I usually put it with a margin of 5-8 USD.

that's how I look for deals with Gunpla.

He gets it at the wholesale price (shipping and customs taken to account) and has to sell it at the MSRP priceso it used to be, the MSRP was on the side of the box

Agreed. Barbatos is one of my favorite MGs simply because of its design and more complex details. Take out the fancy metallic colors, sell it for 90USD instead of 50-60USD and it'd be a great revamp of the MG line. Plus would allow Bandai to resell the same 6 kits for the 30th time.

The newer kits use composite plastic based on HIPS, which is softer than ABS. Older ABS kits had a problem with joints wearing out so watch out for that

The way I use it:
>secure the part in the vise
>put the vise on its little stand, have both hands free to place a tiny PE bit on the part
>take the vise in one hand, use the other hand for fine adjustments/repositioning of the PE bit before the glue sets

The advantage of holding the part in the vise versus just using the other hand is that the vise can grab the part securely and only use a tiny area to do so (while the fingers would cover over half of the part) which is important when the part is supposed to be covered in delicate PE sticking out every which way (as in pic related).

I had the exact same problem, the grooves on the shoulders are way too shallow. As >>10234315 said I had to do it by hand with a regular fine-point gundam marker and it still looks like shit, following curved edges by hand is difficult. Good luck goufbro

Yes? They have all the hallmarks of your average HG's articulation (Pull out shoulders on ball joints, legs attach to the thighs via pegs, etc), similar construction (Open fists made up of one part with the fingers/thumb and another that forms the back of the hand, weapons that are 2 halves sandwiched together, etc) and come in at around the same pricepoint as your average HG ($10-15). You could argue against the C-Clip connections that they use for the joints not being "HG", but they've used them in quite a few HG releases like the Leo/Maganac and more recently the WFM kits. For all intents and purposes it's effectively a royalty free HG line.

This isn't /lg/, the part count of a kit has little impact on the end product so long as it's assembled/painted properly.

There's barely zero difference in the surface detail of a 30MM kit and a modern-day HG, if you're complaining about the 3MM peg holes in some of the parts that's easily fixable with some spare runners and putty.

In what way? You get a complete robot with at least one weapon and depending on the kit a drone. The armor/weapon sets are kitbash fodder, and for the brainlets like you who can't kitbash something they have those sets that come with armor parts in them.

I'll concede the elbow joints are pretty shit since they tend to not be able to go for more than a 90 degree bend, but everything else is on par with your average HG from the last few years.

The first one I made I wasn't super in love with after finishing it. I saw another design I liked and got some of the option parts and now I'm obsessed with building little goblin robots. Some of them have the cost-cutting measures of 00s kits, like hollow back parts on things that shouldn't be seen, so some work is required if you want to really show it off.
But if you just want to build and play with some cool cheap robots then it's really hard to beat.
Also Spinatia is robot wife.

gold selected for 99% of builds I see posted (when replacing color on yellow parts) just looks out of place and lazy.

Looking to get a few Zakus and a Haro build. Can't find the Haro though.
22usd for a Zaku is the cheapest I can find, I am going to use them to improve my skills in lining and possibly painting before I crack open my MG 00w0 kit.
I found Char's Zaku at a store today and I want to make an army though.
My biggest pitfall so far is in my other HG builds is coloring the camera and not the eyes, also applying stickers make me feel like a retard.

I guess that's good, my wife didn't think to ask me, got spooked about a transation from the scary CHINA and called our credit card company and they did a chargeback on it. I didn't know until I got a saw it in the AliExpress app saying my order was froze. But it had already gotten to the US. at the scale you're looking at, those bumps are the size of a fist

leaving the ridiculousness of that aside, you get the bumpy texture by spraying half-dry black gloss paint so it doesn't have time to level and dry smooth, then you spray your metallic on top of that
