Why do people buy these fucking things?

/tv/ here. I’m not really versed in toy collecting. I just want to get some insight on what makes these zoomer beanie babies so appealing to idiots with disposable incomes.

They're cheap, available everywhere and often cover franchises that don't have much other merch, let alone toys, of it at all. But we hate them here because normies like them and anything normies like is bad. Personally I don't get too offended by them but it does get annoying to walk into a shop with walls covered in these things.

I admit too that i got caught up in some of the exclusives and wanting them simply because they're labeled as "exclusives" (ie, i bought one and then bought another different colored one because it was some exclusive) but im watching carefully now a little bit more.

they're relatively cheap all things considered so i hardly even think about picking one up

These don’t sell well in retail stores. At most you get some impupse buyer picking it up. But the prices can never be as competitive as online

Lego essentially created the "stylized pop culture blob" idea, where if it SUGGESTS the character, your brain can fill in the details. By not having details or not attempting to actually capture the likeness, there's less earnestness in trying to depict the subject, meaning that there's a level of ironic detachment.

If you have a little statue of Daenerys Targarien that's actually meant to look like her, people will immediately be able to pick out the ways in which it doesn't look like her, and your earnest appreciation for a property makes you look like a dork. Why did you buy the cheap ugly thing that doesn't even look like her? Do you think it's sexy, you fucking dork? Are you going to pose it in little poses, you child? But if it's an oversized Lego guy with blank eyes and bleached braids that you can't actually play with, then OH, it's not actually SUPPOSED to look like her, it's just supposed to SUGGEST her, and since it's not articulated, you're not ACTUALLY a toy nerd, you're just a pop culture connoisseur.

It allows a level of plausible deniability and ironic detachment, while still giving people an excuse to buy toys and and deny to themselves and others that they're actually into toys.

I work in the British equivalent of Hot Topic and have to restock the aisle of these regularly. Aside from the regular buyers (who pick up multiple at a time, almost every week) I have no idea where the rest disappear to. Parents cluelessly buying for their kids I suppose...

Now, I know some funko are cheaper than nendoroids, but then you have "exclusive and rare" funko ranging on the same price, without actually offering much over your average nendoroid.

I’ve been given 2 funko pops, I had an Ex I used to play league of Legends with and she gave me an Amumu Pop, and I had a /co/ buddy of mine give me a Tom from Toonami pop.

I don’t like Funko Pops, but design wise these two actually look like what they’re supposed to be. Amumu looks like a chunky sad mummy and Tom has his rebought and all. The details are what kill the thing for me so I keep ‘em on a shelf high enough so they’re just out of view enough to look decent. Some of the others I’ve seen are terrible.

malls were already dying in the late 90s, and early 00s. Extremely greedy owners and businesses inflated the price of real estate, which priced out a lot of businesses and the 2008-2011 recession created an even more fucked up situation. Plus, there was a ton of fuckery in the supply/distribution chain that fucked over places like Sam Goody/Suncoast/MotionPicturewhatever. similar to the comic book crash in the 90s.
Nevermind walmart's dominance, which fucked over a lot of the normal priced, everyday purchases like clothes, electronics, toys, movies, games, etc. Their "low prices" weren't that much of a discount, but people still rallied over their 23¢ cheaper shit, instead of going to the mall stores.

If anything, shit like social media led to further deaths, since kids usually used malls to socialize.

Amazon didn't become a commonplace market place until after 2010. Even then, it took until 2016 for them to actually become common (read: selling as much as Target). It still has not caught up to Walmart

Amazon caught up to KMart in 2012, btw.

Art toys that follow the Funko modus operandi of just being repaints at least do so by collaborating with a large variety of actual artists (they're still NFT tier wank). Funkos manifest the worst aspect of both; soulless, disproportionate clones designed only to prey on weak consumers sense of artificial scarcity and nostalgia. Literal goyslop.

The art toys and Sofubi that /toy/ love are undeniably in a different league altogether. A single artist or smaller studio doing a run of unique toys that they've designed, financed and produced themselves. Its not even that it's limited or exclusive, it's that these toys are outside the crushingly boring cycles of the same established IPs and safe market projections. They capture a simpler era of toymaking. It's the passion of design manifested for me; the freedom to use experimental materials, finishes and paints that I don't see anymore from modern toy companies. It's also nice to be paying towards production costs instead of corporate profit margins and IP/Brand tax.

tl;dr Funko, Mattel, Hasbro, Bandai etc look only to toe the line on what their consumer base will possibly tolerate for the highest possible return. They're lead by people passionate about cashflow and stock prices. The appeal of art toys on /toy/ is a break from that mentality.

More people need to realise the actual hobby part of toys and and at least consider buying the parts to make a 1/6, 1/12 version of figures they can't get. I know its not always possible but more often than not someone has at least made an STL of whatever head you want.

I'll admit that I've bought Funkos before but it's extremely rare. I think Funkos based off of non human characters can be cool otherwise they are shit.

It is literally one of the easiest gifts. They are all priced at the perfect gift price range, and they cover basically every brand.
If you know someone likes [Franchise] then a Funko is the easiest gift you can get that they'll probably still like and you don't have to put too much thought into.
That's the big appeal. I don't mind them so much but some are hideous.

When these came out, I focused on getting all the monsters first because I assumed they would sell out fastest. Turns out the 2 humans are the ones who sold out right away and became impossible to find, now costing a crazy fortune secondhand. Still kicking myself for making the wrong call there.
