The Armada cartoon really benefited from the 5 or so japanese spinoffs. G1 sucks to watch. I just watched the rebirth, and it was very painful.

The toys are bad. However they were the first step on the way to generations and masterpiece. The toys articulation are way better than Shellformer War's or Gee 1.

In summary: i'm glad hasbro is revisiting the ANIME SUPER ROBOT transformer series.

Classics owes much more to G2 really. Look at Laser Optimus from 95, it feels more modern than any Armada toy. Armada was basically attempting to be more like G1, or Brave/Power Rangers toys

Honestly Armada suffered from the atrociously rushed dub. I've watched some of the JP version and it's a perfectly adequate 2000s kids' anime. It's stereotypical of the time in the same way G1 was a stereotypical 80s toy commercial cartoon, though I'd argue Micron Legend had a bit more effort put into it.
The toys are kinda bricks for sure, but they are handsome bricks and I'm glad the designs are getting revisited.

I still remember when Megatron got the Requiem Blaster and killed Hoist, the animation quality jumped up so much. I'm pretty sure I teared up for Hoist, who I didn't care much about prior to that. And of course the Starscream vs Megatron fight had some nice animation quality.

Hoist being rebuilt was also kind of terrifying because he wasn't really Hoist anymore. I liked a lot of the concepts introduced in Aramada that we don't really see anymore. Starscream using his Spark to try and hit Unicron was cool too.

And ya, maybe it's just my child brain from that era talking, but Starscream showing Megatron his strength and fortitude in their duel and that his way is wrong, then trying to take out Unicron (though I'm sure he knew it was more of a gesture than an actual attempt) was such a great scene. Definitely the highlight of that series for me. I remember loving the style of Armada and was disappointed with Energon's look. But all 3 of the Unicron Trilogy are still nostalgic for me.

Truth be told I think the only thing I remember about it are the Energon chips and Scorponok. I really liked that version of Scorponok. The toys were great though. Energon and Cybertron had some fantastic toys.

The Japanese version of the show is IIRC just "eh". Some interesting concepts let down by a director more experienced with shorter series and being a very early attempt at CGI mecha on a low budget, but not without merit. The dub however is a total car crash that took the cool parts of Superlink and shredded them.
Toys were badass though.

They’re revisiting Armada? Aren’t they only making a few Armada designs in Legacy? Also I love the designs in Armada especially Blur, Sideways, Thrust, Jetfire, and Tidal Wave I have some of the toys like Optimus Prime and Jet Fire but the electronics don’t work on the Optimus idk what I’m missing with that but they still look cool

The big selling point was how easy they were to transform and they were built like G1 toys with the limited articulation. But I liked them a lot.

I actually liked them too I just remember at the time wanting them to bring back G1 characters but then being like “these toys have a kind of retro feel to them as it is” of course these days I’m sick of G1 and want them to bring Unicron trilogy characters back it really was cool they came out with so many new characters back then I should’ve appreciated that more

I didn't even think of Jetfire. I loved Armada Optimus and Jetfire. I still have them with Overload combined. Big lack of Mini-cons though. Just throw them in a core box (1 or 2 depending on the size), or 3-4 in a deluxe box.

One of the things about Armada is that a lot of the gimmicks were created from ideas Takara had from '95-2000 that weren't able to be implemented in the skinnier BW figures. And if you think about it, Brave only ended 5 years before, and those toys are still in the G1 tradition.
I think its hard for fans who weren't active at the time to know just what a weird spot transformers was in 2001. Japan just plain stopped having new Transformers series, only reissues, because Car robots, Beast Wars Neo, and BW Metals all underperformed. They seemingly had no interest in making new series, trying instead to do their own Brave style series without Bandai with webdiver. But that also failed. That's why Takara went all in on synergizing the brand with Hasbro for the UT, which eventually lead into the modern TF line as is.

They completely cocked up the aesthetic on this proto. Hopefully they went back and completely redid the sculpt for it now that we're getting him as a commander.

It's better in Japanese. no, seriously. The script is way easier to understand and that 2000s dubbing trend of "There cannot be even one moment of silence" just don't exist in the Japanese dub.

The toyline is absolutely bad save for a couple of standout figures (Bendy Prime), but this was the result of parents complaining about how fiddly and overcomplicated the RiD2001/Car Robots line was.

Energon/Superlink is unwatchable in either language, but the toys were a marked improvement over Armada's, and Cybertron/Galaxy Force in Japanese is its own self-contained show and is all the better for it. also the Cybertron toys were for the most part Kino, save for a few unfortunate victims of Gold Plastic Syndrome.

The fuck are you on about? Armada toys had far worse articulation that Beast Wars And G2 and RID for that matter.

I never understood the praise this proto got, especially from Armada fans. It looks like some 3rd party reimagining rather than an actual Armada Optimus. Where's the CHONK? I really hope this isn't what we get in Legacy.

Jet optimus is something unique and basically became part of bayformer prime.

I like the look and aesthetic. I even like sideswipe. My favorite design is blurr.

I feel like the dub is fine at all the important moments. The only bad dubbing/story was the humans. (Especially the part where rad's parents tell him to go off into space).

I watched the dub cartoon with the original Japanese Eng-sub, and I disagree imo. The Japanese script was very bland, especially with characters like Optimus Prime/Convoy which had practically no character whatsoever. I remember watching the first few episodes subbed with Japanese audio and then just changed it to English dub because it was more enjoyable.
Armada's English voice casting was pretty good overall for many characters, especially if you were fond of Beast Wars.

Biggest issue (which you'd get used to at some point) are the weird names like Cyclonus, due to the whole trademark thing

You're actually blind. Literally every single surface detail on it is completely different usually with a bunch of extra angles and curves that make no sense. Some parts like the arms are completely reshaped ruining it's silhouette.

Personally I remember Energon and Cybertron way more then armada, but I will admit how armada is by far the best of the trilogy from the shows perspective. The whole Unicron trilogy was a gold mine of some unique takes on characters and i REALLY miss the era of trying new things with properties but oh well we need some more G1 style figures

"Thing:Japan" syndrome really blinds a lot of people to how bland a lot of Japanese kids shows really are. Having some death and violence sets them apart from a lot of western kid's fare, sure, but a lot of "adult" shows have violence, cursing, death, and aren't much good.
Same goes for a lot of mecha anime and tokusatsu. They're still formulaic, repetitive, and shallow written, the novelty of seeing this sort universe depicted in a less restrictive manner is enough to let people forgive or overlook flaws.

I'd be curious, but on an aesthetic level I don't think it would go over well in modern lines. Their decos were pretty elaborate. Good luck getting anything vac metalized. I kind of appreciate their overall weirdness. But as far as engineering goes I think the various movie lines have done somewhat similar things and done it better.

I'm sure they'd be new takes of them, taking inspiration of their original designs, like the Prime Legacy figures. But things like X-Brawn's car hood forearm would just be cool to see. We haven't had a transformation like that since back then.

I think the biggest hurdle is that a lot of the appeal of some of those Car Robots toys is the emohasis they placed on the vehicle modes. You just don't get that very often anymore. This thing looks better than a lot of recent MPs. Seeing them turn out like Legacy Skids would be heartbreaking.

Armada Optimus has something Rodimus doesn't and that's the ability to combine with his trailer into one singular robot that's bigger than his default form. Rodimus is basically a souped up ER Optimus Prime with extra effect parts to make the Commander price seem worth it. By the long run Armada Optimus is worthy of the Commander Class line.
