So with our 19th Groupbuild coming to a close, we now approach the 20th. Since it's a bit of a milestone and I've been running these for a little over 6 years now, I felt that we should do something a little special this time around. Instead of the typical structure of taking ideas from the posters ITT and polling them to decide what theme to do for the next few months, we're going to have something I'm gonna call the "Groupbuild Groupbuild". The rules are as follows:
>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.

Yep, always thought Big O looked like a cast iron frying pan. It perfectly fit the show's somewhat anachronistic feel, but probably doesn't fit most other robots.

Looking to buy my first air compressor and there's so much variance

i've been told you need an air tank but from video demonstrations it looks like the air tank only lasts like 10 seconds, so what's the point? why not just get a tank-less compressor and keep the air on all the time? if you're spraying for more than 10 seconds at a time it'll be on anyway and the tank empty so what's the point

the iwata smart jet pro looks like a high quality tank-less compressor but hard to tell and it seems like it's twice as expensive as it needs to be

it seems like buying a compressor is a minefield of "too expensive" and "very unnecessary"

also can a typical home wall outlet even supply enough power to a standard compressor? I see a lot of compressors say 220v-240v but a quick google search reports that the standard burgerland wall outlet only provides 120v

having went from a tankless compressor(sparmax beetle) to whatever the fuck this $70 compressor is, tanks are not "very unnecessary".
tankless compressors put way too much unnecessary strain on the machine while tanked compressors use the tank as a buffer making it last you a lot longer and guarantees consistent air flow.

I kinda want to get a Guntank and Guncannon to go with my 78. I love the colors on the HG Beyond Global, too bad there isn't a version for these. I guess I'll just have to get another version of the 78 along with the 75 and 77.
Guessing the HGUC is the best versions to get? See Guntank is coming out soon.

Make sure to get a 120V rated one. Plugging a 240V only model into a 120V outlet makes it run at about 1/4 of its rated power so you get way less than what you paid for.

Amuro's Gundam is RX 78, in the original anime. There are also the RX 75 Guntank and the RX 77 Guncannon.
I have put together the HG Beyond Global RX 78 but there doesn't seem to exist a similar version of the Guntank and Guncannon.
I assume the HGUC is the newest versions of the original models and therefore the best versions to get. Just curious is there is a better recc for these models before I track them down/preorder the RX 75 (even though it's only $10).

yeah the only modern kits of the guntank are the HGUC and the MG.

the guncannon has an old HGUC and the HGUC revive which is the one to get. there's also a MG.

Pointless advice, any spray paint is bad for you if you breathe it in. Use proper protection and ventilation and you might as well use the superior paint (lacquer).

the lungs are self cleaning and are capable of removing the majority of particulates that wind up in them. what does fuck up your lungs are sharp particulates like silica and resin.
lacquers however are volatile organic solvents, capable of doing actual tissue damage and are neurotoxic.
acrylic won't hurt you.

the dangers of paint fumes are way overstated, it's not really an issue with the small amounts of paint you spray doing this hobby. maybe if you do it daily with no respirator for 50 years straight.
there is literally 0 risk of lung or brain damage if you wear a respirator even if fumes linger in your room for a while after you've taken the mask off.

You're laying so little paint down using an airbrush and its so controlled its not an issue at all with acrylics. Wear a mask if you want to. Get a booth if you want to. But neither are at all necessary with acrylics. Lacquers absolutely yes.

I built the Tekkaman Blade recently. It was easy enough to put together, plastic quality felt decent. The black parts were kinda on the softer side, but not shitty. I did need to lube some parts up with shock oil though (the shoulders, the thigh swivels), just because they felt they were a bit tight, both ones you had to put together for the build, and some of the joints as well. I would especially recommend lubing the tiny left arm slot for the left arm armor bit/shield, because they are super tight and you'll probably break it off trying to remove it without giving it a good dose of shock oil.

All in all I was pretty happy with the kit. It looked great, putting it together was as simple as any other snap kit by say, Bandai. Just have some shock oil on hand, you might need it.

Anyone got a good recommendation for lacquer glossy black primer? I've started to use gaianotes but wanted to skip the step of glossy black paint for metallic colors by just using glossy black primer, but am having trouble finding any for sale.

Primers aren't generally glossy for a reason. The closest to what you are looking for is Mr Surfacer 1500 Black sprayed in a very wet coat.

spent too much effort looking for this exactly, now I just skip the primer and go straight to surfacer 1500/use just multi primer if the color of the part is consistent.
have been interested in trying pic related for a lazy dickhead way of getting a base for basic metallics though.

Hi there, I'm pretty new here/to this hobby and all I do out of the box for my models is panel line with gundam markers and put some mr hobby topcoat on. I heard somewhere you're supposed to wash the mold release off the plastic with soapy water otherwise the topcoat "melts" the marker? I did it for this one and I'm about to start on Char's Zaku II but it feels like a meme, can I skip this step if not actually painting?

washing the parts are usually for removing the grease and oil from the plastics (injection molding uses oil so the plastic doesnt stick to the molds) and also cleaning the plastic after you sand them (because leftover plastic dust on your plastic will ruin it when your painting)

skipping the washing step is perfectly fine with gunpla.

Nasca Super Heavy is an etching primer that eats into the surface for better than normal adhesion for parts that rub heavily. I don't know what that has to do with "base for basic metallics".

You do realize that topcoat is an "actual paint", right? If you don't wash your shit and spray on greasy surface, some of the topcoat would simply peel off when you touch it.

I have an air compressor question

I just got my first air compressor (a tooty) and testing it out I noticed something I never heard mentioned in any tutorial video

It will kick on (until it's full) and the gauge reads 30psi. When I spray tho, it goes down to (and stays steady at) 25psi

A) is this normal?
B) if so, would you consider this "spraying at 30psi" or "spraying at 25psi"?

I'm using a hose with 1/8th connectors on both ends, no tape

Thats normal and its not something usually brought up in tutorials. But you want to adjust your compressor while spraying. So if you want 20PSI then spray and adjust it until it says 20 while spraying.

only if you like your gundam to look real dirty, since you won't be able to clean up the liner from the matte surface, also the liner won't flow into panel lines all that well

If you don't paint and only topcoat, you don't need a gloss coat, bare plastic is not going to crumble into dust from contact with enamel wash, unless you are clinically retarded.

If you paint, only use gloss colors so the end result is gloss, then line your panels, then matte topcoat.

Really fucking dumb question but how does the shipping work on HLJ? It's my first time buying gunpla.

I want 3 items - two waiting for stock and one in stock. I'm being given an estimate of £24 shipping, which presumably is just for the one in stock. So would waiting and shipping them all together keep it at around that level or will it cost way more due to needing a bigger box?

The OG kits are pretty sparse out the box, so maybe pick up one of the "specialized" Altos (Flight/Ground). Or pick up the matching Option Weapon and an Option Armor kit with the regular Alto/Portanova.

Alternatively, the Spinatio (Army type).

This line pains me. Every so often there's a flash of something decent, but for the most part they're just so painfully generic looking or obviously aping Gundam designs, only worse. I wish I could turn my brain off and get into these, I like the idea of simple builds for cheap.

Well, I don't know what to say
I don't think I will sand stuff anymore unless I have to do modding or get rid of really bad mold line (HGUC Z'gok got plenty of this)

The dust get everywhere and besides smoother surfaces I don't really see that big difference than me using my blade+ hard pressing with my nails

I have a very simple process for this if you want to spend the extra time cleaning up nubs, mold lines, and scratches. It consists of going up in grits by 400/500 and sanding perpendicular to the last grit you used in order to keep scratches from staying there.

Start with 400 and sand lightly going, say, up and down.

Then, when you're satisfied with the mold lines not being there, go up to 800 and go from side to side.

After that, use a higher grit between 1000-1200 and sand up and down once more.

Keep this Sequence of The Sands going until you're happy with the end results: a seamless surface that doesn't have a nub mark or mold line in sight.

Oh, and if you're worried about dust getting everywhere, get a cup of water and wet your sanding tools. Particulates dont go anywhere when it's damp, and once it begins to dry, just apply more water. Plastic doesn't care about water, afterall

I'm looking at guides for painting and stumbled upon picrel
None of the guides say to do this so it's probably bad, but besides the nubs which maybe could be repainted?

It works for what it is. Just make sure you go back and bush paint the nub separating "uncolored) parts and use the same type of paint

You get results more like commercial products than "handcrafted" though

It is mostly for people who are too busy

I got a ton of plamo back from Japan in 2007 when TSA actually still was militant due to being within a decade of 9/11. it did help to prebuild some of the kits though to actually conserve luggage space.

If it's a special coating variant of a regular kit with normal nub placement, then yes, they will stand out.
If it was designed with the coating in mind and uses undergating wherever possible, they will be (mostly) hidden and may not need any touching up. The RG Unicorn mold is mostly undergated iirc.

So I finished watching witch of mercury and found out about gunpla. I got some warhammer so my question is do you have to paint them or do they come painted already? Because every video I see already seems have been painted and all you do is cut out the parts and just ...click them together? Like you don't even glue? I'd probably go for a big one if I ever bought one but I'm still looking around and maybe gonna watch gundam from the beginning

Everything is unpainted, these just tend to have decent color separation, depending on model. There are usually stickers, sometimes for color correction (HG kits), sometimes for added detail that would be very difficult to paint in (all of the various super tiny warning labels on mecha stuff, for RG, MG kits).

How much color correction stickers there are for any given HG kit, if any, varies wildly by kit. IBO kits tend to be drowning in stickers at times, while something like The O, despite being an ancient as fuck kit (early 2000's IIRC?) has very few stickers.

my current WIP: Gundam ver. Origin

I wanted to make it look like a Ka version or the Gundam Fix metal compositeversion

I just painted the blue, painted some greys as light greys and some as dark grey. left the yellow and red untouched. I love the cream white so I also left it untouched.

so I am starting to go overboard on decals. I used leftover (unused) decals from Daban ZZ and V2 Gundam AB. I am quite disappointed as the Daban V2 decals doesn't stick when they dried and easy to peel off compared to the Daban ZZ decals. Shame that I put a great deal already on a lot of the parts and it just rubbed off.

Based. Just keep in mind Witch From Mercury is in its own separate universe from most of Gundam. The main timeline is Universal Century but over the years there have been several alternate universe entries. Maybe check Wikipedia or a timeline somewhere to get an idea of which ones are connected before diving in. The original Gundam is good to have under your belt either way though, since a lot of the AUs play off of its themes and reference it.

I'd suggest you spend $20 on some general use waterslide decals. That should afford you 3-4 sheets of waterslides and last you a handful of kits. Not only do stickers look bad, but applying a sticker over a painted surface(that hasn't been gloss coated) basically gives you one shot to apply the sticker, lest you try to peel it and it takes a chip of paint off. Another advantage of waterslides is how easy it is to position them before pressing down and securing their position, I noticed some of your stickers are not properly leveled or symmetric.

On a positive note the paint you applied seems to be acceptable, although i still suggest thinning the paint a bit more. Your stickers(if they were waterslides) also have tasteful placements so I wouldn't say you went overboard on them, but I would be wary of adding much more. Overall, keep at it, reminds me a lot of my earlier works.

there's a wonderful website http://dalong.net that catalogs almost all the kits released with a pictorial review and an information tab that shows scans of the manuals and parts. I'd recommend poking around there and finding a few kits that look cool to you to look further into if you like them. Any kit made after 2005 is generally good.

Check the Gundam.info YT channel, they usually have some series on rotation, and even show the movies on special occasions.

Maybe consider picking up one of the 1/144 Entry Grade kits first, so you can get a general idea of what GunPla building is like, and can screw up without having to worry about the kit being expensive and/or out of print.

Also, there are EcoPla (recycled plastic) and Painting Models, which are apparently not very color accurate, so you could try painting those if you can get a hold of them.

To each their own I guess, looks fine to me in person. It's pretty much entirely color separated and the silver and greys look nice enough to me that I didn't bother painting (despite owning the exact colors I need). Weird to think of it as "wasting paint" on it too, it's a very nice model, not some $10 Entry Grade. But again, to each their own.

Well, a few days ago I finished calculating different ways to ship my Private Warehouse from HLJ to Mexico. Surprisingly it I found it was cheaper to do several small packages than one big one with a few Caveats:

*No item is more expensive than 100 USD (so no scales from the get go)
*Trying to accommodate all the packages so that they are shipped on the second cheapest option available to Mexico (Registered Airmail)

the reason it's cheaper is taxes, in Mexico any import package over 100 USD is subject to an import tax of 19% (even though they are somewhat retarded to determine the value of a package as I have found that they consistently undervalue the worth of the items which is why I only aplied a tax of 16% on the image).

Following this I found that shipping small packages less than 100 USD was $2000 pesos (100 Burgerbucks) cheaper as the import tax isn't applied. Wish the federal government updated the limit upward to account for inflation.

I don't think you understand how this hobby works.
The hobby paint is meant to be used on models regardless of their price/size/complexity as opposed to using generic craft paint that will give you shit results. If the hobby paint is "premium" to you because you can only afford a little of it, that's not a paint issue, that's an income issue.

I'll admit there is kind of a weird charm about the proportions, but it also kind of looks like ass. Academy is a plane/tank modeling company, they have no experience with robots. So I have very little faith in the joints and engineering. That elbow already looks real ugly from here.

It's also it's own self contained universe and has zero relation to any of the other gundam series. 79 gundam is pretty great and has held up pretty well despite starting out as a children's toy commercial. Tere's the main UC timeline that started with the original gundam and continues with shows like Zeta Gundam, then there's alternate timelines in their own self contained universe like G Gundam which is goofy over the top robot hijinks. One of my favorites is Turn A gundam which is a slower paced and more atmospheric, almost slice of life at times kind of show. Ghibli esque to irresponsibly throw around some buzz words. It's also got a nice 1930s america aesthetic. So gundams can very a lot from series to series.

For kits, you'll be fine with High Grades, Entry Grades, and even Master Grades. Avoid early real grades for now. Those are a nightmare even fore people that've built hundreds of these kits.
