One of the most complex things on my layout has been the river on the edge, which amazingly has gone pretty easily despite ending up using 20 year old Woodland Scenics Realistic Water (because it was bought 20 years ago and then life just took me away from trains for a while. Besides some white foam I might add in with white paint drybrushing to help suggest water flow better, the river itself is done.

So I just learned that Märklin train cars won't work on Kato tracks because of the wheels not being insulated.
I knew Märklin was not compatible with other brands, but I thought it only meant the train engines.

Looking around on various forums, people say it's relatively easy to change AC wheels to DC, but looking at my car the wheels seem very stuck in there and I have no idea hot pull them out without breaking anything.

Anyone that can point me in the right direction to try and figure this out?

Bigfoot is easily obtainable; I know there's a Preisler single boxed figure that I see sometimes at train shows.

For a murder investigation, getting a police detective should be easy enough, but for 'murder victim' I suggest getting a specially painted 'zombie', laying it on its back so the red splotches are shown, and having some yellow thin ribbons stretched across a nearby door to be 'crime scene' tape.

I tried spreading them a bit but it seemed very tight, and almost broke my fingernails.
When doing so however, it did seem like they would pop out rather easily, I guess I'll try with a cheaper train car, or just try to find someone that could do it for me... which would probably be difficult on my part of the world...

They used to be good, but lately they've kinda turned into more kid friendly toy trains rather than actual models. If you're starting from scratch but want to get into real model trains, start with a bachman HO or N set.

I tried to remove the wheels on an older models from around the 80s or 90s since they were very rusted anyway, they did pop off, but so did a lot of small parts on the truck as well... While the car would never have moved on a track again due to all the rust...I don't feel like it was a success... Oh well... I guess Ill try to put together a märklin track by scouring the used market for any parts to run these cars and then try to find lima versions for my main track...

In general (and excluding narrow gauge combinations and O-27 being weird) a train at one scale will look alright next to another train or product in the same scale.

That's a battery model, so as far as I'm concerned it's going to be shit regardless, and battery trains are never actually the same as the regular model kits. The track will be all plastic, for example.
If you want to get into O Lionel is the most practical source of starter stuff. MTH makes good quality O, better than Lionel's kit in my opinion, but it's all loose bits so you need to know what you want.
Regardless, O gets expensive really fast and is electrically different from anything else, so if that's not what you want to use go with an HO kit from Bachmann or something instead.

They do make HO, but I'm honestly not sure if it's primarily for foreign markets or not. They make primarily N-scale because space is super limited in most Japanese homes, so usually N-scale is all they can manage. I imagine there are some rich Japanese with big homes that have HO layouts though.

There are however a few select low-cost HO train sets from Tomix and Kato.

A few I can think of are the Yamanote Line, E5 Shinkansen, and the Odakyu VSE romance car.

I've seen whole E5 and Yamanote line train sets going for around 300 dollars in some Japanese hobby stores, but they've gone up considerably in the last few years I think, now going for around 700 dollars per set I think.

The VSE goes for around 700 dollars or so used as well for a complete set.

Other than that there are plenty of random freight engines/cars that can be gotten for relatively cheap here in HO.

But yes, Japan is more or less dominated by the N-scale because of small living spaces.
Since I only run Swedish trains I have to make do with HO regardless...

Nope, here's what I found using a quick search on Yahoo auctions.
I remember seeing prices well above that when I strolled around a few h0 stores in Tokyo.
My memory is a bit hazy but I specifically remember seeing a 10-car commuter train for around 1.200.000 yen

Lionel is great. That which you posted howevever is G-Scale. If your looking to get into Lionel then get an O-Scale starter set.
They can be easily expanded on. Lionel does have high quality products such as the two steam trains in vidrel. All manufacturers use the same couplers though and many of the freight cars and the electric engine are not Lionel. All of these built to scale models do tend get pricey and on the high end of the hobby expect to start paying thousands for complete sets.

Yeah sure, if you are looking for random non-modern commuter trains I guess the paper kits will do, but if you are looking for Shinkansens, other express trains, or modern commuter trains you have to shell out a ridiculous amount of money unless you go for the extremely limited selection of modern, cheap Japanese HO trains.

I'd love for you to prove me wrong, I really would. I'd be thrilled if I could find a 500 series shinkansen or an Odakyu 60000 series that would not absolutely obliterate my wallet.

I wish Lionel didn't undersize the cars in the starter sets so much.
I don't really mind them being kind of cheap quality, it's a starter set after all, but just a little more plastic on the mold and they wouldn't look that different from a normal ~$80 passenger car.

Lionel's quality is for shit these days. I haven't bought a locomotive newer than RailSounds 5 but a while back I bought one of their reefer cars, picrel.

The one off the rails is what I'm talking about. I bought it to match those two old Weaver cars I have but they are far better quality. Lionel's older reefer cars are also far better, heavier feeling, more detail parts. Those older versions are some of my favorite cars, I have probably 15 or more.

I kitbashed this from a Bachmann Alco 2-6-0. The hardest parts were moving and reshaping the cab and building up the phat firebox. I wish someone would do a 3D print, or god forbid a mass market model.

Haven't tested them yet but I have another pair in good working order. They're in good shape cosmetically at least. One needs new track pins and the other has the remains of what I think was a fiber insulating pin stuck in it.

I feel like metro / commuter / subway consists are rare on a good day, and that's for rolling stock that has been in service for decades. Don't bother waiting, if that's something you want to model try to find a 3D model of it and do a printing or molding.
The only models I can find of my metro system are dummy promotional models but the shell alone could get me started on a kitbash if I really wanted to do it.
Those EMUs could totally enter service, leave it, and never have a mass market model made over steam engines from BR's heyday or really well known trains like the Eurostar.

I know this was 10 days ago, but Lionel's "Ready-to-Play" sets are a little larger than O-scale. They're battery powered (so the plastics are 100% plastic - no need to carry power), meant for kids, and also really loud.

Their O-scale stuff is fine. Also, Lego trains are very close to O-scale. Both Lego and more realistic O-scale stuff are compromised in that it would take a ton of space to model tracks that looked remotely realistic. They're designed to have much tighter turns than their scale would suggest. In other words, it's too large a scale for most homes.

HO (1/87) is the most common and therefore the cheapest. Bachmann's starter sets are sometimes a little too low-quality, but that's fine when you're starting. Their sets with gray track pieces are higher-quality than the ones with black track pieces.

Sorry blurry image.
Use a flat head screwdriver and pry under the axle and it will pop out easy. The hard part is getting it back honestly. Just use something small like a screwdriver to push one of the "hooks" back and push the axle in. I have the same wagon and just tried.

so they are gonna launch a railroad system and this first set will come with a couple of options from what i understand , one with a display track, one with just the train, one with just train no tender and one with a track layout included. the track looks interesting with it's texture

Not exactly drop-in/drop-out, but it went over better than my first Decoder install (The H-16-44 back there, something's up with the motor but I dont have the knowhow to figure out what). Other than having to solder back on a contact strip that snapped off from bending it a bit too far it turned out pretty good. Jesus I don't know how O-scalefags put up with these prices. Like I'm over here looking at my N scale Bachmann steamers that go for like $250-350 and I thought those were expensive. And I know most places probably knock off a few hundos on the price but still, $300 for a caboose when I can get one for $20-30 in N scale is just kind of absurd.

Lionel has switches that cost over a hundred per switch. Not per pair, per single fucking switch. I spent $600+ on Polar Express stuff when I started out and outside of the loco (which is fine mechanically, and solid metal), all the cars and pieces are cheap plastic.
The cheaper Lionel couplers fucking suck and are so plasticy and weak, but at least all O rolling stock can usually couple together okay. I've been trying all the other O manufacturers lately and trying to find a quality and reasonably priced source for runnable engines and rolling stock.

I've heard the Menards rolling stock is decent if you're not worried about scale detail etc? Some of it goes back to the AMT/Kusan postwar-era toolings. They're still trying to figure out their F Units.

Put your track on a table. Maybe even put cork under the tracks to deaden the noise. As for the noise from the locos, starter sets usually have the cheapest and shittiest controllers. Try a different controller and see if it helps.

You're running three rail anyway. Get tubular O or O27 and ballast the shit out of it. O27 isn't scale, but it's lower profile than O31 and can be had in O34, O42, O54 and O72. O27 turnouts are limited to O34 and O42, but you can use standard O turnouts if necessary. Not my layout, but here's an idea of what can be done with three rail tubular.

Worked like a charm, but I probably spent a hundred dollars all-in with wire, a distribution block, and crimp connectors. I already had crimpers and a soldering iron laying around. Picrel is the new block I picked up.

The quality is great. They're basically rugged old school conventional locos with basic sound systems. Bachmann has dropped the product line down from a thirty page catalog ten years ago to just three or four pages in the regula2ns4nvr Bachmann catalog. What they sell is still good, they just aren't selling much of it anymore.

Nah Bachmann models are perfectly fine, they just had a shitty strategy when it came to their O Scale offerings

Their models themselves are fine, especially when it comes to their HO/N stuff. They're not super-high end like something from Scaletrains or Broadway Limited, but they're better than budget options like Lifelike and the rest.

Wheels are locked up and I can't move them at all - I think it might need the whole driver set to be quartered. I've never had to deal with this before honestly. So I have this little corner in my layout with a siding leading off the main line that I have no idea what to put there. My original idea was to put a coal trestle there by cutting out the foam and going to the wood baseboard but I don't think I'll have the room for it (the foam is only about 3/4s of an inch). I can't imagine it's much more than a check that needs spoofing in the application registry somewhere since all that changes is they send you a key. I've just been cheating and doing layouts in sections. pic related is a depot layout meant for trolleys and LRVs I started forever ago and never really expanded upon. it was based on the Riverside yard in Boston, only smaller.

With live overhead wire you'll be fine, that's one way to make a balloon loop work without needing special switch wiring.
In that case, both rails are negative and the overhead wire is positive, and the loop around doesn't shunt positive to negative or vice versa.

the light rail alone has 4 different PCCs and 4 LRVs (and the Boeing has 3 service car schemes). the only things made are a PCC by Bowser (which isn't accurate at all) and an out of production and increasingly rare Boeing that isn't the best quality to begin with.

has 3D printing reached a point where decent quality HO scale models can be printed? this is assuming I go aftermarket for things like trucks, motors, etc.

So long as the electricity is strong enough to cover the entire track, it will work. You can also increase the range of the electricity by adding aditional wiring along the underside of the track in intervals. When doing this, be sure not to mix your positive and negative wires. One each side must always maintain the same charge, or else you risk burning your hous down.

I believe you can do that conventionally since DC powered train move based on the direction the current flows through the track. It’s easier with DCC though since you can fine tune how fast a motor will run with each speed step.

It requires a programming track and some basic DCC programming if you know how to do that. The procedure is to either add or subtract 1 from the value of CV29 (if it's even, add one, if its odd, subtract one). A quick search should bring up a bunch of videos and forum posts about how to do it.

I would suggest that you scrap the turntable or otherwise move it to a module off the main board. Those things eat up a LOT of real estate and can subtract from running.

I would suggest looking into something like this layout:

It doesn't have the turntable but otherwise has everything else you want and offers a lot of operational fun.

Also, you'd be best looking for things that ran in the 1940s-1950s if you want to run Steam and Diesel, known as the 'Transition Era' for self-explanatory reasons.

Back around the 70s through maybe even to the 2000s (but probably the 90s), dummy locomotives were a cheap way to milk money by simply not including the motors. Cost of production was less since motors are typically one of the most expensive components and consumers could essentially get locomotive shaped cars that could make a train look like multiple units were on it.

That changed when economics shifted and the amount of profit that could be made from powered locomotives simply outstripped the cost savings of selling dummies, especially if you didn't make any dummies and forced people to buy only powered units.

I'm not sure it would be able to do curves, as while the wheelbase on actual articulated multi-driver locomotives are hinged, obviously the boilers are NOT. Even 4014, a mere 4-8-8-4, which is hinged in the middle, has extreme trouble on moderately tight turns such that they have to run it at the lowest possible speed sometimes to get it through without derailing or worse.

Hey, frens! It's newfag again. So I bought Bachmanns "The Stallion" set because I thought it looked cool. Turns out the Locomotive is absolute dogshit. It stutters and slows at corners.It's a F7-A Diesel and I love the detail on it.

I cleaned the wheels and track with IPA and got black shit off the wheels and track. Still nothing.

Do I need to resolder the contacts or lube the mechanical stuff?

Brand new Loco set, but it always stutters on corners. Does this solder look bad?

Not sure what would cause jerky operation only on corners. Lubricating the thing wouldn’t hurt but I’m not sure that’s the issue. Remember, a little oil/grease goes a long way.

EZ track is also just dogshit so get some Unitrack ASAP.

DC Power does not allow for multiple engines to be controlled individually/independently from one another. If you want to do that you'll have to look into getting another controller (if yours doesn't already come with two outputs) and assigning different parts of your layout to each output.

For yard switching, it requires that there be a good organization of assigned locations for cars depending on where they are going, as well as a blocking order so you're not stuck rearranging cars while out on the mainline.

Not that I wouldn't expect a swapped road number or two, but I never realized how prevalent that particular loco was. Interestingly, it seems like some versions got separately fitted handrails on the boiler, versus molded, but the bell is always a single piece. That handrail, and the headlights versus big cylinder near the front headlamp, are all the differences I can spot right now.
I wonder why they bothered swapping the tender around at all, since the result isn't really all that prototypical anyway.

Victorian Railways in the 1950s-1980s is more or less a combination of this.
Steam locos take cues from the US and UK, L class electrics built by English Electric, S and B class are EMD cab units, Canadian style passenger carriages, signaling that makes zero sense. The list goes on.

Ah shit sorry I'm tired, I'm doing OO gauge mainly with british steam and maybe some early diesel, honestly I have not put much thought into any specific locations or industries to put on the layout. I mainly wanted a layout that would maximise the limited space and allow for express trains and industrial shunting stuff.

That triangle junction above where it says Pendergrast Ave might be a bit tricky, I don't see why the rest would be that difficult with flex track and off the shelf turnouts.
Some of the geometry past the car park might be difficult to copy exactly with existing curved turnouts though.

In retrospect, starting off with Lifelike Proto stock was NOT the best choice, since I know the covered hoppers lost detail pieces that I can't even recall what they're missing and the F3 has lost both horns (though in recent years I did manage to locate and obtain the other CNW P1K F3 units for a full ABBA consist), but someday I'll figure out and fix what little me broke.

I guess my next question would be is it possible to mix and match rail brands? assuming I use code 83 for everything, could I use, say, a Peco slipswitch with Walthers turnouts? I'm trying to model parts of the old Tremont street subway but some of these curves/turnout angles are absurd. here's my attempt at Park St. the next "Station" (Boyleston) has some next-level slipswitch shittery going on connecting the four tracks together before the station entrance.

Usually yes, unless if its something like bullhead profile which might not always work. I'd still just buy a couple cheap pieces first just to be 100% sure in your particular instance.

You can get short lengths of code transition track if you need a specific turnout that isn't available anywhere else.

With those really tight curves you may have to cut out some of the plastic between sleepers, or even remove a couple here and there. Curves like that aren't that uncommon to see with On30 or Sn42 narrowgauge, but the trains tend to run fairly slowly.

All my engines are DC and I collected them when I had no money for DCC kit. Most of them broke, the ones I have left aren't DCC ready and I'm too lazy to retrofit them.

in terms of practicality it's literally just oo but smaller. bachmann's 009 locos are probably the best on the market, but their upcoming talyllyn loco isn't going to be up to the same standard because the tooling is just based on the skarloey model from the thomas range for kids. it'll probably still be a good model tho, way more affordable than their hunslets and fairlies.

In terms of simply wiping up dirt and gunk, generally they seem to be good at the job. The main thing is how much track there is to clean - if there's a lot of track, the track is inaccessible (I.E. tunnels or not within arrn's reach), or both, then those cars would be invaluable. For something like a table layout where every place is accessible, it's easier just to do it by hand.

I can't tell what gauge that is, it looks like HO with horn-hook couplers, but I wouldn't.
If you're poor, dropping $50 on an engine that probably won't work would just make you sad. Get something tested.

I've had quite a few, all 20+ years old at this point.
If it's the kind with 4 wheels, fixed in place, they're basically unkillable. As long as the motor can get juice they'll run like a bat out of hell.
No idea if the recent builds are as sturdy.

My bad, I'm thinking of the trolleys that look like picrel, which are AHM and Mehano and Tyco and others. Bachmann seems to only do the moveable wheel models, with 4 wheels on two trucks.
I've had those too, and they run alright, but they're pretty sensitive to track dirt and were a pain to clean.

Thoughts on my track plan? Did some major reorganization in my basement and a corner has been freed up for a potential layout. Had the standard HO set on a 4'x8' as a kid 25yrs ago but have barely touched trains since. I've had the itch for a couple years now.

It's an odd shape as I'm dodging lalley columns, water shutoffs, other benches and access to the electrical panel. Basement walls are bottom and right side. Leaning more towards passenger trains, continuous running and scenery rather than operation. 24" minimum radius throughout, a single industry and a small fiddle yard. Want to model it loosely off my nearby railway, so I went with a double track mainline. On the fence between NHRR McGinnis era or modern Amtrak.

Where do you intend on viewing the layout from the most? If you're building the layout from the bottom right corner you should make sure you can access anything you put back there at arms length like that yard over there. Going off of how awkward your layout scenario is you should figure out your benchwork first and foremost before track planning. Working around support columns isn't that hard, you can just build the table around them and hide them with scenery like a mountain or something.

Your layout concept is alright as a first draft and you're pretty clear on what you want to prioritize (East coast passenger trains), so focus your design around that. However, two loops and a siding is still boring as fuck. I know you said you don't want to do operations, but look up how rural stations along the New Haven looked during the 50s and look at how small industries were built up around the Station itself. Most importantly, you only have one way for trains to pass over from one track to the other, while having both passing sidings would make the layout more prototypical while also giving you more ease of operation (ie: not needing to back into the siding to get into the inside loop).

I recommend browsing http://www.jomrd.com/index.php?page=ViewByTag&ID=37 for a bit, there's a ton of nice little layout designs that you could easily fit into long two-track main with little alteration.

I'd probably view it most from inside the bend, and 2nd most from the opposite side. I'm planning benchwork concurrently, basically the track plus a few inches, and there should be enough of a gap to reach my siding from the back left.

I'm backkkkk. Modeled the basement obstructions (columns, water main, electrical and hot water access, existing bench) as well to help with designing. I'm liking this one so far. I have a loop crossover, plus a little point to point in the middle with access to the mainline. I've seen Amtrak road switchers pulling around a couple freight cars on mainlines before so that could fun to model. Walls exist to the left and bottom, top and right are just areas I'd like to stay out of. If I design my bench right I'll have good access all around the layout.

Mainline, Yard & Crossover: 24" min radius and #6 switches
Interior Point to Point: 18" min radius and #4 switches

I probably won't get around to building this for year or two. New roof this summer, kitchen reno come fall, 100 other minor house projects, plus the overtime to fund it all.

Probably a Bachman or something. Probably cost you about $150 if you get super lucky, engines aren't cheap and Bachman is what I'd call the lower end of available stuff these days.

The alternative is you learn papercraft.
