So with our 19th Groupbuild coming to a close, we now approach the 20th. Since it's a bit of a milestone and I've been running these for a little over 6 years now, I felt that we should do something a little special this time around. Instead of the typical structure of taking ideas from the posters ITT and polling them to decide what theme to do for the next few months, we're going to have something I'm gonna call the "Groupbuild Groupbuild". The rules are as follows:
>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.

Can you guys help me out with what kind of spectrum of techniques there are with gundam assuming that the person doing the models doesn't have an airbrush?
I do tanks and planes so I like to cut the parts and then sand the remnants of the nubs down until the surfaces are clear and then paint them with an airbrush but my nephew likely won't have an airbrush for years so I'm really not sure what you're supposed to do
Do most guys just try to clip the parts as closely to the surface as possible?
What kind of painting do you guys do?

one thing I've learnt about liquid mask is that it's really easy to get "lips" on the edges of a masking job because unlike masking tape there's literally no separation between the mask and model.

I tested using a spray primer I usually use for miniatures on a runner, and it seems to not stick very good at all.
The only paint I have that is somewhat competently adhesive to gunpla are gunpla markers. I know they leave marker patterns on large surfaces, but still, using them as primers should somewhat work. Has anybody else tried this?

it depends on the region.

If you're in some place like most of the CA coast or southern Florida, they don't turn on heating because it only goes down to like 50°.
Lotta people go on without using heat and just putting on a sweater or layering up on blankets, because they're unused to needing heat to not die.
It's just an extra expense for these people, like bottled water or a garage door opener.

Go further up north, where it snows, and ofcourse they turn on the heat. It's part of their budget every month.

You clearly don't get cold weather. Even with central air/heat, the chill lingers when outside is 30 below. And just "turning up" the heat isn't a smart option as it can overwork a furnace. That can cause CO poisoning. Plus heating bills surge in the winter, mainly due to dumb ass places like Texas. They see two snowflakes and panic, crank the heat, diverting natural gas and causing artificial scarcity. Combine that with inflation and the whole Ukraine thing, LP prices are at the highest they've ever been. A lot of upper Midwest states are seeing 300-500 USD bills a month. And that's tame, places in the south that rarely have need for heat, I've seen 800+ USD a month.

You should have some radiator heating or kerosene for real backup if your furnace can't handle running like normal. Its currently -20 outside right now and I'm keeping it a toasty 73 in my house and keep it this way all winter long. Last month my electricty+gas bill was only $220

I don't know how long you've been here, but people used to bitch and not spray because it was too humid or too dry. People generally wait until good days to start a project because of various climate conditions.

Being on or off the grid just means if you are pulling (or providing) energy into the system. So if you had enough solar panels to cover 100% of your own energy use, your location would be "off the grid" but if your panels break, you could call the local power company to start supplying it to you. I used to work at a power company and due to the phrase "off the grid" being taken over by the "no phone, no electricity, no gooberment" people, a lot think it means total isolation. Unless you are legit in the woods in the mountains, you aren't truly off the energy grid, ever.

Z'gok ended up being a bit foggy for the darkest plastic from the flat finish. Didn't realize it was raining tiny tiny bit and the humidity just a bit too high.

I can live with it. Considered water stained

But the damn thing is floppy as hell. I need to get some varnish for this

question about primer colors:

i bought white, grey, and black primer, thinking white primer with white paint (and black primer with black paint) made sense

now i'm second-guessing if I should actually do that: would you be able to see the paint well on the primer if they were the same color? would it make it too difficult to paint and tell if you have good coverage (since they're the same color?) should i just use grey primer for black or white colors?

I had an idea but had some questions for people who do customs. Has anyone used gundam or 30mm kits to make custom Halo figures? The art direction of the suits are surprizingly similar. I was thinking of making a Halo OC using a 30mm Alto kit as the base.

recently got a new light setup for my spray booth, just curious about something:
do you paint by looking at the part changing color or do you paint by looking at the sheen?
because right now I've noticed that having a strong sheen on a part while painting makes you able to see everything that's happening, every paint particle that hits, every dust speck that you can quickly remove etc. etc.

Look for a halo level 2 sprukit by bandai. Theyre old now. Thorne has the ar. So does master chief. Also should have a pistol. Palmer just has 2 pistols. Alternatively you can try a mcfarlane or jazzwares halo ar. I have a few and can try to see what fits later on today.

Anyone know much about Armored Komodo? It seems not many places sell it. I founda video (https://youtu.be/40oayhIBLkc) on how to touch up gold plated kits and I really like how it looks but the shit's sold out everywhere. And it's specifically the gold chrome.

Are there good alternatives? I tried the gundam marker and some warhammer paints but nothing matches the gold.

For gloss I get it as shiny as possible, I used to always pussy out doing lightish coats not wanting it to run run but I've started blasting it to actually get a good gloss finish, for flat you can probably do whatever you want since it all dries the same

Not sure about enamels but most i see use lacquers. They're just easier to work with. Dont cause dry tip on the airbrush, clog less (this is just a thinning issue though it shouldn't be happening with acrylics either), less spattering, it can be sanded so you can fix something you messed up or polish it to a high gloss, their glosses and metallics also seem to be better, because you can sand and polish them candy coats are easier and get better results too, don't have to layer lightly like acrylics. Theyre just a nicer easier paint overall. Only downside is their fumes and they're much more toxic when spraying them as well as the solvents you thin them with.

Enamel paints are great in that they are very forgiving, you can fix your mistakes hours later. They are typically used for details on top of other coats that won't be affected by enamel thinner. Also for weathering.

what i do is put grey as the initial coat, then when you're confident you've prepared the surface well enough, follow it with the corresponding primer color for the color you're going for; white for white/light colors, gray/black for black/dark colors, etc. there's also pink primer for those ferrari red colour schemes.

believe it or not, but the armored komodo mirror finishes uses the same technology as nail art products. my local car modeling group in flipland (where armored komodo is abundant and cheap as fuck) had success in using nail polish as paint for model cars thanks to a locally-formulated paint stripper that also works as a thinner, ironically.

Side note, just started airbrushing for the first time. I'm really seeing every brush stroke stand out, like if I spray up and down I can see stripes that might be a little darker and it looks like a zebra. If i do it in spirals you can see the spirals. Using a 3.5mm Iwata with Gaia surfacer 1:1.5 primer to thinner ratio.

I think I got the best results at like 22psi, holding the brush really far away, and putting on several layers. Not sure what I'm doing desu

Photo-etch parts are only really good for when you're going to paint a kit, right? To me apart from some cases like thruster nozzles and screws and the details on the bottom of the zeong, I find the unpainted metal looks a bit shit and out of place.

Are there seriously no third party effects parts for the HG kshatriya's funnels? I've seen the p-bandai qubeley parts work but they're expensive. Was thinking of getting some acrylic rods and bending them into shape to make my own, but not sure how they would attach into the binders. Anyone done this before?

asbestos and resin dust are different, they're much finer and more jagged particles that your lungs can't effectively remove and cause scarring inside the lungs. paint doesn't do that and your lungs can remove it

finished the MG Gundam the Origin version. used paint only on the blue parts and some of the dark gray parts until I ran out of it and just used gundam markers to touch up the gray.

I planned to paint the whole inner frame with light gray but the color is thickening the plastic making it harder to fit and brittle so I stopped. I also used silver marker on the elbow pistons and the back pack

Lessons learned:
use a real decal sheet. the Daban sheet may have saved me money but taking pics of it shows how much different a real good decal sheet can make.

Work with a slow and steady pace with a steady workflow and with an undisturbed mind. I hurried too much finishing this kit, because in a surprise twist, I am being kicked out of my own house by my brother. so I am finishing this kit before the deadline.

I used three sticker/decal sheets.

sticker sheet from the Gundam Origin sheet, waterslide decals from the AA model ZZ Gundam, waterslide decals from V2 Gundam AB.

all are very poor to mediocre. the Origin version stickers have a lot of shimmering despite putting on a gloss coat and then matte

the AA model ZZ Gundam decal sheet are inconsistent, some are good, not having some shimmering, some do

the Daban V2 Gundam decal sheet are atrocious to put on, keeps flaking off, but has little to no shimmering

as for the red headpiece, its from the Daban Gundam Ver 3.0, my brother and I got to a fight over the house and he threw the kit, built it back, but the red piece is missing, so I transplanted the red piece from the Daban model

overall, I like the concept of decaling the kit to make it look like a ver Ka kit, so the next kit I will do it to, once I moved to a new house

How retarded do you generally make your paint? I've heard retarded paint will dry smoother and more even, but I don't know how much to use. Ok here is a good tip, but nobody ever listens to me. Dont push down on your files/sanding tools. Just let the weight of it be the downforce. You focus on moving in one direction, not down. Its just plastic not actual gundarium alloy.

Other than than you should use higher grits and sand it smooth.

The edges are beveled, so they wont dig in as bad over the entire surface. Has a nice cutting power but doesnt overly cut into excess areas. A bit overpriced yes, but definitely a step above the normal nail files. However the infini 3 way file system is around the same price and just as good if not better, if you can handle a file without messing up the surrounding areas. The raser is just easier for new users to pick up and use.

Thanks to whoever wrote the guide. I think it answered my questions. I just watched the first Gundam movie (1979) on Netflix and it made me want to get back into modeling. (Well, that and the Gravure YouTuber who does gunpla.) The movie was a little dated, but that actually makes it more impressive. I was enthralled within 15 mins. Also watched Hathaway. That was pretty boring and remarkably bad at action or even making the shots bright enough to show the mobile suits. (But Netflix usually does suck at animation.) Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm going to get an RX-78 Revive and try to find whatever I have left of my modeling tools from 40K and shipbuilding days. I appreciate the community and looking forward to my first kit. Finished Supplice after about a week or so on and off building it.

Really enjoyed the build, especially since it was my first time trying to fix bigger seam lines and such. Didn't come out perfect, but still happy that I went through with it.

Articulation isn't great, but that's more the design's fault than Kotobukiya's.

That said, think I'm most proud of the way I painted the eyes and sensors, considering I did it in the most bootleg-ass fashion possible.

LATAM is the next China with the tariffs they host on goods. A 20 USD kit would easily be 100 in local currency, I used to see it every year working in retail where the wealthy would travel to America, get their "cheap" plastic toys for "their family" and rinse and repeat.
When I met a couple that lived full time in the US I got a deeper understanding of the whole thing.
I have dealt with thousands of people that buy to sell. LATAM and SAM governments are pants on head retarded, literally not a good market to go into.

Wanted to get back into Gunpla and chose a long-time grail kit to get back with. The vintage Z'gok E really is no slacker when it comes to ease of construction and general looks. The bulk blows the HGUC out of the water and the seamlines were essentially a non-issue.
Did spot painting for parts that needed it, namely anything red, the entire jetpack, and the mono rail.

Went to the store today to get my supplies replenished. Used like 1can of Tamiya gloss and 3 flat for a simple HG kit.

And like always, TS flat and gloss clear are out again. Though the store managed to have mr. Surfacers and ended getting the normal flat and gloss clear surface and one can of super smooth clear.

I never used smooth clear. What should I be expecting compared to the normal stuff?

The pre-bent upper arms and thighs do a great job in making the design look more fluid and the torso area just utterly destroys the HGUC in terms of looks.
HGUC has its charms, namely the beefier claws and the more properly detailed hydro jet, but the vintage is shockingly competent if not better in many ways.

Thanks again guys. I guess I'll just narrow it based on what deals I see between Revive, Beyond Global, and Entry. They're probably all good and just have their nuances so I shouldn't overthink it.

I'm still in the phase where I need to lie to myself about modeling being easy and cheap. Nevermind that I did it for years as a kid and know better.

Any thoughts on ship kits? I used to do AMT, especially Star Trek ships, and Battlefleet Gothic. I'm only asking because my impression is that Bandai is the best at snap kits these days. Gundam or not. Just keeping busy. Thanks.

of course but I don't think it's as big of an issue as you think it is.
besides the construction of the GSC stand joints is quite nice as it's plastic on plastic friction but it's rotating around a metal pin and tightened with metal. a bit better than using model plastic and have all the stress come down upon a tiny piece and gear of that material I think.

Funny example to pick, I am actually dyscalculaic (like dyslexic, but with numbers) and have always been horrible at math. Kitbashing is very little like math to me. It's more like fingerpainting, or mushing clay around. If I want something to go somewhere, I glue it there. if something's getting in the way, I cut it off. Gradually you just learn to do it neater, make it look less shitty. Which is, again, how you get better at modeling.

Try kitbashing. It is not rocket science, you might like it.

Fucking fights with like 2 faceplates and some hands are like $80 a pop. Optimus Prime MP was like $400 fucking dollars. Combiners for 3P stuff are like $600+. Kits are cheap as shit, unless you're buying a new pair of Godhands and PG's every week and throwing them into a dumpster

It relies on a bunch of standard connection/attachment points (3mm hole/peg, bar/c-clip, etc.). Those are likely to be compatible OOB. For stuff that isn't, you would either have to use adapter parts, kitbash something that does what you need using other OOB parts, or modify the parts.

Just moved, so i'm looking to buy another airbrush + spray booth (sold mine before moving as i needed quick cash). I don't have enough room for the booth exhaust to reach a window though. Would it be okay if i put the exhaust hose into a water bucket? Make a seal so the fumes cant get out? I saw zakuaurelias does it this way, anyone else done it?

does the plastic have any visible bubbles in it?
seems like a lot of clear plastic has bubbles in them for some reason.

They're made extremely cheaply.

These models are made of gray plastic, some joints are almost black plastic. Full painting required. Parts that do not affect articulation need to be glued for durability. There are seams to remove.
