There's actually beena few interesting discussions about this on /co/. Western furry art made a huge leap in rendering quality in the last 20 years, but its influences range from cGI Disney/Pixar, anime, video games, concept art, etc. Basically there's no single guiding aesthetic, its all at odds with itself. Where as older furry art was just WB/Disney styled, and JP stuff is anime-esque. Its a simplification, but that's one way to look at it.
