for it to actually allow a joint to move, but then stop where you moved it and stay that way, it would have to be some kind of smooth rubbery stuff. If it were actually mushy and soft, they would fall apart and not hold poses. also what youre describing is basically a doll. Dolls are different. the floppiness is part of the appeal
i'm reminded of the playmates Ronin Warriors toys which hit on the clever idea of running coilsprings inside of their limbs, with rotational ratcheting so you could sort of twist them and they would sort of keep their rotation, making every joint a potential swivel but also a spring-loaded pull-arm-back-let-it-go punch action
didnt work for shit and basically made them simultaneously floppy and bricks, but damn if I didn't love those toys anyway. Was a sucker for removable armor. didnt care that it required the head underneath to be tiny.
