I do wonder why masks seemingly became such a small part of Bionicle after the Mata. Masks are unique molds, and outside of the occasional set that reuses them, mask packs seemed like the perfect collectable for years to come. Instead we have things like Kanoka discs (which had least had differences), but then even worse things like Zamor Spheres or the squids which were just colored differently. And not even just as collectables or making the most of parts like molds, maybe I was a bit detached from the lore but it felt like the mask powers were less significant. I have no idea what the mask powers are after the Mata and Metru, where it felt like those were a significant part of the characters, and also a big play feature to the toys.

I can imagine a few reasons why that happened, including the loss of the face knocking play feature, the decrease in mask varieties to a few per year, the deprecation of mask swapping in the story, the reduced importance of rahi, cheaper production...
Some playsets did include masks, kinda as heraldry, and then there's maxilos' shoulderpads and karzahni's kneepads

Mask powers were much more significant to the Inika/Mahri than they were to the Metru. Vakama's team literally did not have mask powers for most of their story.

With a few exceptions most custom Bionicle parts look straight up apalling. Picrel isn't even the most extreme example. They all look like they were made by some autist without any knowledge/experience in design or sense of aesthetics who learned how to use blender watching tutorials on youtube, which is probably the case.

Yes, they will forever be inferior to the genuine article, but I've only ever been happy to see more masks. Not all are good, but they're not all bad either, you're just being way too hyperbolic. I will say, the prices for custom masks are dogshit. Sellers shouldn't be charging more than 5 bucks a piece, honestly. PLA is not that expensive. 12 to 20 dollars for a mask is fucking ridiculous.

I don't have these parts irl to actually try this out, would this be a sufficiently strong connection to hold an entire lower arm and a fairly heavy weapon? I'm doubtful, but I'd like to add a bicep swivel (more like lower arm in this case) in there so it can better hold its weapon.

The parts in dark bluish gray (ignoring the elbow and the ball peg piece) are the ones in question, in terms of sufficient amount of friction.
And I guess two questions if there wouldn't be enough friction, any ideas on how to increase it in some way, or if there are any alternate builds that may allow this same motion.

I was also going to ask for opinions on ways to increase the friction of the bracket piece in light gray so that there's more than 2 studs, but I can just use two smaller bracket pieces on both sides... so nvm about that!

I basically tried to make the focal point the 'swivel' added into the arm of that Takanuva GWP design. It pushes it up 1 unit higher than it was, but being able to swivel should help the range of motion you can get out of the arms.

gave this a shot. they elbow hinging on studs definitely isn't lego-spec but overall it's definitely stable enough to MOC from. The 1x1 bricks with clips definitely help the stability of the elbow. The pin above the elbow definitely has enough friction to hold a pose, but probably can't go too heavy with accessories. If it becomes a nuisance you could try committing some sacrilege by putting a spot of teflon tape around the pin - don't think it needs it though. I'm interested in your idea, so if you don't have the parts on-hand to prototype the stability with, I'll try to keep up.

Appreciate the proof of concept. That's all for now in terms of 'new' ideas though. I basically made the Takanuva GWP concept (where I've seen this elbow hinge technique for the first time, and it works surprisingly well) and found certain sections lacking, or with possibilities of improvement. Using a similar construction of the arms is how I have the legs conceptualized, and I'll also integrate this into the waist to give it a swivel there as well. I may play around with some mixel joints to give it some proper mid-torso articulation too, but it's also fairly heavy so I'm not sure if the tolerances on those will be strong enough. There's also currently an axle going from the neck to the waist area, so I'd have to split that up for that mid-torso movement.

mixel joints absolutely will not work because they don't have nearly enough friction. you might be able to wrap a small rubber tire around a mixel joint to limit its movement though - I'll have to mess around with that one tomorrow.

Hard to tell from this angle, but I'd say aside from that the gold is mostly uniform, so having the white there would probably throw it off a bit. How does that on the thighs and none on the shins look? Or just sub in another gold part on the thighs. Less is more a lot of the time, as well.

I was salty about Bionicle's death so I didn't really look at any constraction until some later waves of HF. I do remember seeing the Ben 10 ones and didn't really like the aliens they were choosing though, so that helped further ignore them.

Few problems with the G2 masks. Once again they weren't collectables, but worse than that even they were boring in that they had no interesting powers (I guess you could say they lose their elemental powers if they lose their masks, and then have the same powers but stronger in gold?)

That's just way too generic. The Hau generating a defensive shield was just another way you could play with the set, and so was levitation, speed, strength (can't do much in play with underwater breathing and x-ray vision, I guess). One could always just invent their own powers, but established lore is usually how people build connections to properties, and G2 just didn't really have anything to latch onto aside from just designs.

One of the biggest complaints with g2 was its oversimplification. In principle, making the toa have no powers until they get the golden masks and unlock their elemental powers (which is how I believe it worked) is totally reasonable, but... It's so much more stifling, as you explained. G2 could have been really good, but it was underwhelming (not bad just missing a lot that it could have done better) and then canceled by execs who wanted to keep milking ninjago or whatever it was at the time.

In the absolutely off chance that a company is interested in making Bionicle figures and that somehow, for the first time, Lego licenses out one of their properties, the thing anyone would possibly want to make if they want a chance at making any money the figures will be of the Toa Mata based on the toys. Nostalgia for anything else Bionicle isn't nearly as strong.

The 6 Toa, Takanuva, and Makuta. Maybe some notable Matoran or the Turaga. That's probably the limit. What would probably make for the best figures in terms of canister sets would probably be the villains though, Rahkshi, Barraki, Piraka, Makuta.

Yes to some degree of leeway regarding aesthetics and articulation. Fake ball joints (spherical hinges) and extra elbows where the pieces suggest movement would be fine by me. Altering the kanohi or doing some wild reimagining wouldn't.
I think the proportions and mechanical detail are a key aspect to the bionicle look that lego system can't really achieve.

I agree this is basically guaranteed to never happen, but it's really interesting to me that a company like Hasbro clued in to the market and has let other companies make figs based on their IPs. Maybe lego will eventually get that stick out of their bum and try to broaden their horizons again - right now they seem like they're losing a lot of market space, so I wouldn't be surprised if they tried something radical. But I still agree it won't happen in this way.

Sis got me this box and is visiting Easter. Was $30 on some classifieds in the big city for like 2 months. I know it has a Gen 2 Kopaka, and a Speed Demon (purple bike). But I also see a Invasion From Below Kaiju in the upper right corner. I always adored that wave but never got the chance to get my hands on one. The dark green rib cage I hope is umarak :<

I know a CCBS Hulk is in there. Probably the only Marvel CCBS figure I’d want.

Roboriders and Slizer go together perfectly. I think they are close to the same scale so they could ride them. RoboRiders was a solid line. The Boss is a very impressive design aesthetically to this day.

Slizer doesn’t feel as polished. Was looking at a turquoise Throw Bot the other day and noticed it didn’t even have a unique face print.

I guess I can only speak for myself. I grew up solely with the toys, and the books quite late. Still never saw the movies. It's possible that some people are most fond of the movies, but I'd have to believe that the more people bought those 2001 canister sets just because it made such a big splash back then. No clue how well the movies did or didn't do, just that I've heard bad things about the 3rd and 4th ones especially.

I'd say technic in combination with the action features was the heart and soul. Those early sets with a focus on masks and knocking them off was imo what made them so captivating. It eventually "devolved" back into essentially throwbots where they were action figures that were just shooting stuff.

damn anon you just dug up a memory of the knex mech I made when I was a kid. It was about 3 feet tall (I only know this because I also had the Screamin' Serpent which was exactly that tall) and almost everything was completely posable. It was mostly contructed with "tubes" made out of snowflake connectors and gray rods, which were then built up to look like body parts. It needed rubber bands in the knees and hips to stand upright and you could make it kick out by rocking the load off of each foot because of them. I'll have to look through the albums at my mom's house to see if there are any photos of it. I used to get pictures of *everything* I built - pic related. Take me baaaaaack.

Even buying titan-exclusive parts is crazy, just try getting silver Rakshi heads or gold Metru thigh armor on Bricklink, it's insane.
Best thing poorfags can do is go yardsaling and hope something shows up, though the golden age of Bionicle at yardsales was probably 5+ years ago at this point. I found a complete exo Toa, miscellaneous old collectable Kanohi, and a near complete Brutaka going yardsaling, along with plenty of other less rare canister sets.

I'm about to get the last parts I need to complete a 2003 Makuta and then I'm done with everything but yardsales. Prices are crazy, I've got most the sets I care about, and the rest I'm resigned to not having. Not sure what to pursue after this, all my achievable nostalgia goals will be complete, and nothing else tickles me quite the same way BIONICLE does.

It'd be something like 500usd if not more, especially with the limited run nature of these kinds of sets, and that's not an easy sell for most people, especially for an item they probably don't really care about, made up of 95% grey pieces. Look, I'd probably get it, you'd probably get it, a few hundreds of us probably would, but most wouldn't, and it probably isn't worth it to Lego to manufacture such a large and expensive set for such a small number of people.

It's pathetic but upon reading that I actually asked her to shake the box and send me another pic. You are correct, there does appear to be some grievous in there.

By my count I see Kopaka 2016, Kopaka 2015, Onua 2016, Skull Scorpion/Skull Slicer. Doesn't look like there's anything from gen 1 except maybe Stars Tahu (the sword).

If Umarak the hunter is in there I will die a happy man. I do see part of his bow near grievous torso. Will pray the mask of control is in there somewhere.

Not this anon but I had a similar experience, I remember thinking that the new designs on metru were interesting, but they were so different than the mata nui designs I didn’t care much because I just wanted more mata nui content because it was what I grew up with. So I dropped it when around 2004 also. now that I’m older I’m interested in it, but I think it was a bad move for them to have so many years of story on a different island. While it’s cool the toa team were the turaga, it felt like such a different story I didn’t care what happened. Retroactively because the later years were such dog shit I think it makes me respect the metru arc more now that I’m back into it

I don't think anyone questions the quality of the sets (well, at least the 2015 Toa and Umarak sets, the Uniters were weird, but lots of others were pretty weak), for the most part. It's everything else about G2 that doesn't stick the landing.

It also had a complete axon, several glatorian, inika, and a ton of other mostly complete sets. My plan is to gather all the parts for the sets I can find in here, then sell the remaining parts and buy the replacement parts I need to finish the sets. Vezon and several other sets seem to be missing their mask or weapon for example but nothing that would be crazy expensive to replace. Legitimately like 20 here factory sets here as well that are mostly complete. I'll have to take a big picture with my sorted haul once I'm finished and have all the parts for each set in bags and labeled

Hope you got lots of villains. Jetbug, Thornrax, Waspix, Meltdown, corroder, Scorpio etc even Cthe kaiju at the end are all badass. The heroes are just sad in comparison. And worse they never really changed them throughout the series, they just got alternate versions sometimes up to 3 iterations of the same boring hero with very slight tweaks in appearance. Not even worth selling desu, just keep the bones for parts/repair/mocs.

Disagree about both. I thought the double sided mask was really cool, especially back then, and I remember when playing with it he'd spin his head to where his mask faced forward to activate it. And for the original set, he was sufficiently large that he was imposing. Sure the set was a bit goofy and the legs weren't great, but he was still pretty fun to play with and fight the Toa with.

Nice build anon. I always felt bad for Lhikan as a kid. The idea of a Toa team was so ingrained in my mind at that point it was shocking to see there was only one lone Toa defending Metru Nui and the rest of his team was killed or turned against him. It felt scary he was always backed into a corner and he didn't have a team to fall back on but kept fighting against all the evil that was hunting him. His ending hit hard, it was too much for me as a kid. he was very brave. I hope to find his kit one day.

I think Makuta’s legs are better then roodaka, sidorak, keetongu, etc… They’re more sturdy. They didn’t really get titan legs right until axonn and brutaka with the leg piston for extra support

It's an incredibly underdeveloped idea. It'd have been cool to get a Toa team with these powers (as toys). Feels like the Inika, just because of how different they were, could have gotten these powers. Someone threw out the idea of a KS, individuals designing a system, parts, and story, for some original constraction like theme. Idk how much money it'd generate, or if it could become a feasible business venture, but there are certainly enough talented people in the Bionicle space that this could become a thing. Whether or not anyone would even want to bother, only time will tell.

Gali Uniter is a very graceful unity. I feel like because Akida has no legs, the combination flows more smoothly. I would get rid of the 2 canons so it's just wings.

Too much stuff. Remove the Keychain, Spiny thing and shoulder guns and its an extremely sleek kit. I don't really like the asymmetrical gimmick. Just pick one or the other, I think the orange bits look better on the shoulders but either combination would look good.

I think it would be very reasonable if you were to say the slizers/throwbots and the roboriders were prototypes made by the great beings that were sent to go jerk themselves off on their own little worlds. Would be neat to reintroduce them in a hypothetical long-lived g3, but lego would never put the effort in to do that.

I doubt that's the reason he left, but while I agree that the pitch was probably a bit too convoluted, a middle ground should have been reached. It was way too simplified as it was. But it's in the past now, and hopefully if there's ever a G3 that there are lessons learned from both G1 and G2.

I wonder how many suspected it way back before there was a precedent for it. Did anyone guess that Vakama and friends were previously Toa? Or were they simply aged Matoran and elders of the tribes. I've been having a lot of fun rereading the books (I own all of the Ignition books, but just read through the first 2 and barely remember it, so I'm not even sure if I read them or just bought them) and it's still just as interesting knowing most of the 'secrets'.

Well, once the Metru Nui arc was planned, they started hinting at it pretty hard in the Toa Nuva books.
I don't know if the fandom way back in the early days ever suspected before that, though. The Turaga were always kind of like mini Toa, moreso back then even, so I don't think it would have been a huge surprise.
Funny thing is that in the original concepts, the idea was that Turaga could become Toa rather than the other way around, like a priest ascending to godhood.

Just compare the respective Bohrok Kal.
Magnetism makes things sticky, Gravity makes things heavy or floaty.
It doesn't seem like Toa of Magnetism can go all Magneto and do whatever they want because lol magnets. Their powers are limited to energy blasts and making targets attract metal. Toa of Iron are more powerful in the sense that they can directly control and create metal however they want.

Seems like a Toa of Magnetism, another of Gravity, and a third of Iron would be a near unstoppable team. Make enemies weightless, magnetize them, and throw iron at them. Once they're all together increase the gravitational pull in the center of that while the Iron squeezes all the metal together, and they all crumple and compact up into a nice little ball.

I only use stud.io now because even ccbs joints have started to crack or become unbearably loose. Its addons are helpful but I only have them for the official pieces not included in the base list, custom masks are the only things I'm willing to touch and still half of them look like a terrible hybrid of G2's sleek mask design trying to replicate the more complex masks of G1 and failing horribly.

Technically the ability to "create magnetism" should allow them to make magnets out of any material, metallic or not, so that's a distinct advantage the moment they enter a more organic environment. Gahlok-Kal immobilizing enemies by making them stick to the ground on Mata Nui comes to mind.

So I was randomly making my bed of all things and noticed in a bag Glatorian Mata Nui. The thing is I never bought him, I had some dumb idea about the order in which I bought them and missed out on all the ones I really wanted, but there he was, missing one set of thigh armor and one of his yellow shoulder things. I must have randomly found him at a thrift store or something and completely forgot about him, but great, I always wanted him. I'll need to buy a few parts to complete him but that's ok.
