work 3rd at a Walmart and for about the last month we've started having a pair of scalpers that come in daily at 7am on the dot.
Asked one of em and they say they're just collectors but collectors dont buy 8 of the same hotwheel or every box of 1 type of pokemon card box and every lego set that was recently marked down.
Apparently they're going to every target, walmart, walgreens, and cvs in the morning every single day and attempting to buy anything remotely collectible.

The actual sad thing, and I say this as someone who has scalped when I was in university in a minor way, is that most scalpers waste so much time scalping that they could easily use their time to get a better job and make a proper career. Getting up early and going to stores at 7am is pathetic, instead they could work properly and invest that money so they have way more money than those few hundred extra bucks they make in a year

I used to be a wagie at Target Canada, and the way I'd get the shit is being a merchandiser so I'd have total control over see what type of products came in.

Its hustle culture and hustle culture is not permanent. I don't begrudge people for doing something on the side, but the people that make it their 'job' are cancer. They don't like things they like money. They just convince themselves they like things so they can make money off of it until it's not working for them anymore. Pandemic exacerbated this practice and now every facet of subculture is infected with scalpers pretending to be collectors scooping up everything. I used to be into thrifting and reselling stuff I thrifted that didn't fit me for a fair price, but once I saw people re-listing stuff they bought from me for 2X I lost all hope in this thing being just a space for people with shared interests. I buy what I like and if I don't want it anymore I'll sell it if it's worth something but most of it gets bulk sold to a local toy shop. I can't be bothered to care anymore. It really sucks if I can't get something I really want, but that's that. Maybe it's not worth the hassle. I just enjoy the things I can get.

I get you're a jaded piece of shit, I don't criticize you for that, but scalpers are dumb because they hurt themselves in the process. Their efforts help lower the ever-declining quality of toys, cut down reach and other crucial things for toylines to survive, and they don't even make much of a profit.
As much as I hate shit like Funko Pops at least it acts as a sort of containent toyline for wannabe scalpers, imagine if all the "this is gonna rise in value" funko collectors were to turn their eyes to actual toys...

you're probably not making a lot of money right now, given how much product hasbro, mattel, target, walmart, gamestop, ross, tjmaxx, etc have dumped at 25% and 50% of msrp. And how much ebay fees and shipping are right now. Its really not worth your time for 99% of toys.
