got my non-SS airazor. I can see why the photographer had the feet backwards, once again the intended robot foot is longer in back than front.. when is someone going to tell them, you cna't do that. yes lots of trasnformers are back-heavy, but a foot is a thing that sticks out in front, period. You can have a neutral foot that's the same on both sides, fine. but not bigger-heel. never bigger-heel.

Man Sideways looks so fucking good. Just bought one on ebay myself, but overpayed a bit because I'm bad at judging Hasbro's stock/how long to wait for potential sales. Ah well, I don't buy many TF's nowadays anywho.
I really hope they redo earlier SS figures like Barricade in this level of quality. That old Barricade looks really poor, which's a shame when he's one of my favorite Bay Decepticons.

I mean, they were still doing that in WfC Trilogy too, making sure the vehicles are as realistic as possible while the bot modes had to conform around that, which still hindered a few aesthetically if you asked me (Earthrise Optimus and Bee for starters).
Hell, even the Beast bots were given "realistic" looking animal alt modes.

Yeah. I mean I'm not against changing how the beast modes look a bit, I dont want a perfectly show CGI-accurate Cheetor with caved-in forehead, or Rhinox with a blunt sledgehammer for a face... but I'd still want them to be ateast a little bit stylized or reminiscent of the cartoon.

The Beast Wars characters spent a lot of time on beast modes, the cartoony faces give them personalities, if you want boring looking animals there are way better and cheaper toys.

mainframe are WEIRD guys, they have oddball canadian choices in cartoonish stylization. but a lot of it still looks good, and the robot modes are usually refreshingly unique and distinctive.
not sure what you mean by tall but I do remember his nostrils seemed a bit tall. the main problem with rhinox's beast mode on the show was the weiiird narrow human eyes with visible sclerae. if rattrap coul have cute all-black eyes in beast mode, why not rhinox?

there's definitely a proportion issue going on, where some parts would look better in both modes if they were larger or smaller. lots of small beast heads and overly long legs going on, even outside of beast guys you get bizarrely long legs or legs with bad knee placement

Ah, fair fair then. It was before my time, I wouldn't know sadly.
Picrel is what I meant by "his snout is too tall"; compare this to the real pic I posted earlier lol. It looks very silly, though honestly it's the worst that it got; most everyone else's CG models actually aged much better. Really just Cheetor's forehead and Tigatron's weird nose that come to mind as off-putting.

i mean most animals have a pretty flat cranium I think the issue is they let his exaggerated cartoonish eyebrows raise up in a way that gave his head funny bumps, and made it look caved in between the two brows. They would have done better to just exaggerate his head somewhat to make it more like a housecat's. those are easy to add expression to. But as we all know, they were totally winging it here, in terms of how you should rig and animate CG faces. and to this day, while parts of it might look silly, they still did a fantastic job making the bug dudes emote with their bug mouthparts where modern CG would surely just slap big photorealistic human lips and taxidermy eyes on them and call it a day.

weird yes, but within the realm of tigernatomy. He reminded me of a cat I had around the end of beast wars. That heavy nose and slightly squinted eyes somehow make him look russian to me. It's cute. and very distinctive, he wasn't just another Rajah or Shere Khan interchangeable tiger.. buuut he did look strange once in a while, and whenever he had to get dexterous with his paws, it was obvious they were not rigged to do that.

I did say tried, yeah the robot mode articulation leaves a lot to be desired. Still the tank mode is vastly better than the original and Megatron has the cannon on the arm instead of the hip as all Megatrons should have. And the tread pylons relocated to the back is far better than keeping them on the shoulders. Only UT fag and shills care about toon accuracy to its detriment.

is that charming in its own way? sure. and there's no reason not to try to recreate that design for people who just enjoyed the show and want to see it again
and the rest of us would like to see the basic idea but redone somewhat. remixed. Some of the motifs.. it might be cool to have the antlers, like, on the tank barrel. make it look a lil scifi. or attach to the front corners of a more normal tank, but folded in "Arms folded" configuration before deploying. that could be gnarly. There's lots of fun stuff you can do. What if the turret mounts on a flexible, scorpionesque tail in robot mode so you can basically put it wherever you want. shoulder, hip, anywhere.

Armada megatron is a nice reference at best but he's a name slap with a pretty big design flaw that being his h tank design with an exposed head sticking out in the front. It should be more realistic like most tankformers in g1 and CW did that well.

look at concept cars/planes, the ones you desperately wish got made, but didn't because of some dumbass budget reason, leaving us with the lame actual ones of reality. Each of them is designed to at least be plausible and cool, and not have anything jump out at you like 'wait why is it like that?'
toy design sometimes ends up differently, but we don't have to just tolerate that. we can rebuild it. we can believe we have better taste than a particular transformers designer, or alternately, that our ideas are better than the reality of what happened when a bunch of different executives restricted what it was possible to make.

I'm an Armada fan and I actually like that every design in there is inherently unrealistic. Look at Optimus, his truck mode is beefy and wide as hell, but you're not gonna see anything like that irl.
Is Armada Megs a perfect design? Maybe not, but I love him warts and all, cuz I think it gives him character. He's a bit awkward (and intentionally asymmetrical), but he owns it because he's the fucking god-emperor of destruction, bitch!!
Honestly my biggest gripe with his design is just the colors; having highlighter orange-olive green-purple all at once makes him look a bit like a cheesy NERF gun, but even then I've kinda gotten used to it as part of his charm.

well I read from some trivia that his antlers was meant to be a gimmick but was abandoned in the end. would be great to redesign him without it since it serves no purpose than making him look far removed from what a megatron typically looks. If he must keep his antlers then he should be renamed

You're missing the point of Armada's design style; everything about it was trying to completely reinvent characters in a fresh way for the new millenium - both design- and writing-wise. It's why Optimus doesn't have boob windows and is morally-struggling with his lust for combat; why Starscream has a giant schlong and is an honorable swordfighter who only hates Megs because he's being horribly abused; etc.
Some designs land spectacularly, some are kinda eyesores (looking at you, Red Alert). But Megatron barely looking anything like G1 is the entire point and part of his appeal.

I love Transformers specifically for how FLEXIBLE it is, with how many different ways its been reinvented. I appreciate Armada for being bold. i am also a big fan of the ravage toys, both scales. not much in the way of altmodes, but fun spiky robo kitties.
and the dinobots were pretty rad.
the vehicles are not exactly my cup of tea but I like the designs well enough from the neck down. lots of good motifs that mainstream TF should keep, such as

Reinventing means reworking what is previously present, so logically shows like Animated and Prime took the foundations of G1 and worked from there, remaking something new and different from g1 but staying true to the virtues of transformer. Armada does away with all of that, megatron has antlers, optimus lacks window tits and combines with his trailer, scavenger is now an autobot not a decepticon not to mention constructions in a traditional sense (team of construction workers) don't seem to exist at all. And above all else, minicons, treating them as if they're pokemons to collect them all and provide a power boost by combining (again, something that should restricted to 5+ bot combiners). Most of that is ripped wholesale from super robot anime and transformers is neither super robot nor Japanese.

You have no proof of this, the toyline looked to perform normally if not worse than beast wars due to focus on gimmicks instead of proper articulation and Energon did away with most of the shit that made armada armada, and that did even worse because the play pattern was everywhere and the cartoon was shit. Cybertron only did better but not by much, Bay had to step in and restore the transformer name to its former glory so we really suffered through 5 years of absolute shit.

It's a great sequel to beast wars, evolving the characterisation of the cast into its different but logical conclusion and breaking the status quo set up with beast wars. It was all Hasbro anon, their label was stamped everywhere back then but no sign of Takara. In fact Takara only helped with the initial concept but it was Hasbro who turned it into the Transformers we all know and love. The true hero of all this is Floro Dery and Bob Budiansky. Nothing can match their creativity and they're both Americans (well apart from Floro who was a Filipino bit they go hand to hand with America)

The Transformers I know and love have designs that are clearly japanese though. They're literal transforming super robots with vehicle parts. Americans wouldn't have been able to come up with the whole transforming concept and aesthetics if not for the original toys. Sure, articulation, but these toys were great back in their day for their demo because they were chock full of action features. That was the appeal of the toy. Without the action features, absolutely none of these have anything going for them. A lot of their aesthetics exist to facilitate the gimmicks, without them they just look poorly designed from a base level.

I'm talking aesthetics here, not their use in fiction. The silver humanoid face on a helmet all transformers have is a classic super robot thing and one of the most defining traits that got incorporated into Transformers as a whole.

Also there's diaclone cars with sping loaded rocket punch action, and there's so little lore about them that you could very well use them as overpowered, guts fueled robots instead of just more grounded military machines. But again, this is about mecha aesthetics evolution and how much it influenced Transformers.

I keep hoping for an upgrade kit that gives a chain or something to go over his fist that lets you use the hook as a fist weapon, but nothing. Every other figure seems to get some matrix factory bullshit where they get 4 or 5 accessories that make no goddamn sense half the time or have some obscure reference to one panel in a comic from years ago or an alternate universe version that might have had this weapon, but poor Scraphook gets absolutely diddled.

Take Hotrod. The original had the backpack and leg design because of the minicon and engine gimmicks. The evolution toy has them because faithfulness to that toy, in spite of the gimmicks being gutted.

You went from a toy that looked a certain way due to its functionality to a toy that looks the way it does because of faithfulness to that toy.

If anything, AEC need the traditional classics treatment. Toys inspired by the ideas, but new. Not toys trying to recreate those toys with modern sensibilities.

It's like what MotU Origins has now. Replace the gimmick with articulation, gut the point of the toy.

"Prime"- Arcee clone design wise, purple jetski.
"Beast Machines"- Tiny alien powerboat said to have been made to fight on oceans found going further in Cybertron to the organic material from Quinesson era. Has skis in robot mode.
"Animated"- Bratty loli that came to life from a small-scale model of a tugboat via an Allspark fragment. Looks like wearing a school uniform, and has a (non-functional) fusion cannon in copying the Megatron of this world. Red eyes.

Deluxe-
"Cybertron"- About normal. Typical loss of springs, so the torpedoes cannot be used as missiles.
"Launch G1"- Vastly out of scale Yamato that has a place for a human pilot for some reason but otherwise looks accurate. Boxy, not particularly feminine robot mode that is rather blatantly a ship folded in thirds if viewed from any side but the front.
"Fuzor"- Giant isopod/moth, seems to have Ohmu aspects bleeding in. Can do a "mermaid" mode by not splitting the legs.
RiD15- Submarine with the robot mode parts birdlike with wings on the inside, clawed hands/feet, and a Gatchaman-like visor. Homage to a Pretender version that was omitted because ran out of slots. Seems to be a different character than the Prime one.

Voyager-
"Beast Wars"- Plesiosaur. The entire head/neck is used as a giant weapon.
"Robots in Disguise(2001)"-Transmetal II strange anglerfish thing that is shaped more like a shark. Recycled from some Maximal that didn't actually exist. Key feature is having the altmode head as a rocket launcher with male anglerfish missiles.

Leader-
"Movie"- Ticonderoga-class cruiser. Really fucking tall according to the settings, so much smaller than expected. Digitigrade legs, crustacean-like face, and huge breasts. There are a lot of tubes on the robot mode that seem to invoke a skeleton.

Commander-
Cybertron Galvatron cosplay version. Triple-changer with boat and "jet" modes, has the same Batmobile aesthetic. Has pontoons the mimic the placement of the front wheel section of Galvatron in robot mode. The main robot is still just a Leader-class in terms of mass/parts. Remainder is a teal/grey/black lioness robot with faux F-14 parts that turns into an arm as well. (Nemesis Lybreaker?)

Titan-
Atlantis. That spaceship, but as a robot. Triple-changer with a usual half-assed base mode. Has a dummy key slot, but you need to manually deploy the massive cannons. Does not have any visible faction symbols, only the symbol of Earth. Even the robot mode details are a mixture of aspects from Earth-native guys, but since it is her line favors her appearance generally.

Exclusives-

Boat Drones- 3-pack of the Core class one in more bluish colors.

G2- The battleship but with strange, mostly black and green coloration. Has her name written in all caps on the side and electric tampographs.

Beast Wars Whatever- The “original” Maximal that the RiD01 version claims to be a recolor of. Has the appropriate Spark crystal and more heroic colors.

White Version- remake of the DVD version colors. Would it be Walgreens since those colors seem to be used often?

Elita-1 and Chromia- Two-pack that does “Remake of BotCon exclusive” and “Japanese namesake G1 colors” respectively. Have alternate heads and guns included to make it more appealing.

SDCC Commander- Cybertron Megatron colors. The partner robot arm has mostly green and white colors.

"Show-accurate" pretender that had the entire altmode as a separate weapon with a thin robot that on the inside was omitted because of space.

I never thought of that before, but if cybertron is supposed to have an organic past, it stands to reason that it has, or had, a hydrosphere. we know it has an atmosphere of some kind since they can talk to each other through sound vibrations, but oceans never come up do they. we get aquatic transformers but only from other planets.

Alright I've been working on this a while. I think I'm done with it for now.

I'm very fond of the Transformers Cloud gimmick of characters being weird new repaints of other characters. I think the theme would be DNA or dimensional mixups, with a storyline where there's been some big dimensional crisis and mixed-up hybrids are popping out with a ragtag band of characters from different universes trying to stop it. Also tossing in a bunch of my favorite characters.

My favorite gimmicks are things that give them extra weapons besides their normal gear, so I think the gimmick would be that characters have bonus weapons that they can use in their vehicle mode as add-ons, like how Metalhawk's guns become boosters. Most characters also feature 5mm holes on the back of their hands to mount weapons like arm cannons. Also Blast Effects are back.

Got my first ever Titan, Black Zarak, today! He was on sale last weekend, so I thought, why not?
I knew he was going to be big, but none of the pictures I've seen did anything to prepare me for just HOW big he is - both of my Jetfires, Victory Saber, CW G2 Superion, and PotP Abominus all just barely reach his hip! He's so big, in fact, that my horrible phone camera can't actually get him all in one shot when in scorpion or city mode - not without having to stand WAY back, anyway.

(Main) robot mode - like Earthrise Scorponok, he's a Headmaster in a Headmaster, and thus technically has two robot modes - the big robot here (which is one massive transtector), and the second transtector that makes up the big robot mode's head; the actual Zarak is the head of the smaller robot, and can either attach in head mode to the bigger head to make up the neck, or ride in the big robot's chest in either mode (since the big head can attach with or without Zarak actually plugged into it).

I'm glad I got the Decepticon Race Track Patrol - Roller Force here is the perfect size for interacting with this guy. Black Zarak's fingers are surprisingly flexible and can be used to grab or hold lots of things pretty securely, which is fun in and of itself.

Scorpion mode. Not exactly the most complex transformation in the world, but it does the job (though I wish the scorpion legs could fan out a bit more, but whatever). While the Skorponok version of thsi mold has a rather dinky looking tail barb, Black Zarak's 6-piece Tyrant Spear is designed to break up and attach to make it bigger - the handle separates into two pieces and clips on either side (with the lower hald leaving hte spike on the bottom attached), while the two segments that make up the spearhead are supposed to attach to the top of the tail barb; unfortunately, this also makes the barb heavier, causing it to droop pretty badly (at least, on my copy). As a result, I only used the very top piece of the spear for his barb and left the second bit still attached to the upepr half of his spear handle, then mounted the tip to the underside of the barb instead to keep the tip from swinging all the way down.
From this angle, you can see Scorponok's black collar piece attached here; the instructions say it isn't actually needed on the Black Zarak version (and can possibly chip the paint on his head), but I left it on here for completion's sake; in the future, I'll keep it in his box. Oh, and you can also see Zarak himself here - there's a tiny peg in the middle of BZ's robot chest/scorpion back that his tiny headmaster form can stand on; as mentioned in the second post, the big robot/scorpion head can attach to the body even without Zarak plugged into it, and the gold chest panel opens up to reveal a cockpit for the little guy to ride around in instead.

City mode is also a fairly simple affair - basically just his robot mode doing a split with his hands up in the air. Both of the ramps (which sadly weren't able to fit into the shot here) have A.I.R. Lock connectors on them so you can link him with other characters' base modes, as well as with Battlemasters like Slitherfang or Soundbarrier. BZ's big head 'Lord Zarak' transtector (which is the size of a Deluxe-class figure) has a pretty cool robot mode, with a visibly battle-damaged chest piece sculpted into it; regular Zarak's head mode also has an eyepatch, which is the first time I've seen such a thing on a Headmaster. Oh, he can technically pull off his 'Hydra mode', but I don't have a stand strong enough to support him in that form.
SG Jetfire made me realize just how much I like bigger, stompy robot toys in general, and this guy is definitely a fun centerpiece; my only issue is that I literally have nowhere to display the guy, since he's too big for any of my dispaly cases or shelves (he's just standing next to my desk at the moment). Makes me a bit concerned about what I'm going to do with the Ark I just bought from yesterday's BBTS sale in preparation for Nemesis (or what I'm going to do with Nemesis herself). Also debating tracking down a Black Roritchi to go with him, though it may be a little while - I've spent enough money these past two weeks.

You're right, my original concept was for it to be weirder with mixed-up character selections, but I ended up with too many characters I really wanted new molds for. A lot of my original ideas for repaints and stuff ended up shunted to Selects. The stuff I had the most fun with was the stuff like Tarn-Shockwave and Perceptor-Megatron; I guess I got too greedy in the end with toys I really, really want. I also had a hard time coming up with Core bots that we didn't already have so I used the Firecons, but I'd like to think of some new ideas.

Any ideas of your own for Cloud/Botcon style mold reuses that might be fun?

With ball joints, pop them off and dab pledge floor polish on them. Put the joint back together, rub it around, then take it apart again and wait a day. It should tighten them up on the first go, but it may take a couple coats if it's really bad.

if you can't find floor polish or it's too expensive, look for water-based polyurethane.

also it works for other kinds of joints, but not as easily since you can't just pop the joint out to coat it, so you have to wiggle the joint to work the stuff in, then keep wiggling it to make sure it doesn't seize up (if it does, warm soapy water will fix that)

i like to use cheap plastic bottles meant for henna application, so I can stick the needly nose into deep joints.

I'm not super thrilled about it but for $60 it's a serviceable Volcanicus until I inevitably cave and buy the generations selects set. Little pricey for me and I'm not a fan of the power of the primes one.

Transformers Generations Combiner Wars First Aid

The fourth least boring of the Protectobots.
He scoots ahead of Streetwise by being some sort of angular off road rescue vehicle instead of a normal boxy ambulance.
On second thought I think we get off road rescue vehicles more often than regular ambulances.
On third thought do we have any regular ambulances? Ratchet isn't one, he turns into a white van with a light bar, not exactly equipped with room for paramedics to work.

But yeah, First Aid is a remold of Off Road. Which goes a long way to explaining his shape.
Paint work is nice enough, the windows are picked out with a nice contrasting blue and the red isn't too broken up by panels.
The grill is a spot of silver and the rear end is completely barren white plastic.

First Aid has got a 5mm port on each side and one on the back, as well as a dedicated peg on top for his HFG.
Most interestingly are the 3mm bars on top, something that had been phased out by this point.

Transformation is standard CW fare. They were mostly all the same.

I think it's fair to say First Aid is the cutest of the Protectobots. His bright blue eyes and doofy square scramble city helmet see to that.
The red on his chest looks less like a paint mismatch and more like an effective two tone look. Sad that mine has a splotch of red right on his eye.
I appreciate how RESCUE and EMERGENCY are unbroken when the arm transforms. That had to be intentional.

Kinda funny how the only surviving blue in this mode lands on his knees, which were no where near any of his windows.

Like the transformation First Aid's articulation is all standard stuff.

He's got the ball jointed neck, shoulders, and hips.
Swivels at the biceps, thighs, and waist.
Hinges at the knees and, for a little extra zest, soft ratchets at the elbows.

So get First Aid if you need a robot with big squire or young ward energy or if you want to complete your Protectobot team.

I wish they would do more figures of RiD2000 characters. I'm watching it for the first time and it's easily some of the most fun I've had in any TF show in a long while.
Honestly, it's really surprising to me they haven't yet done even Skybite in Legacy yet, let alone Fire Convoy, God Magnus, Gigatron, etc. I'd kill for a new Fire Convoy desu, his super mode is killer.
