Painting can seem intimidating, but GW really did do a lot towards making it surprisingly easy. For skitarii, you just need a metal paint to start, then you use a red for the cloth, and can bring it all together nicely with a black wash, literally that easy. You can enhance it further with a tiny bit more effort, by dry brushing on the same paint onto the same surfaces; the black wash darkened what was initially there, so dry brushing on a bit on top will be a slightly brighter color, giving it some more depth with a very simple application.
After that, if you want to add in even more detail, like glowing lights, you could either just do an application of white and then light blue, or use a light blue wash on that newly painted white to create a nice gradient light effect!
I recommend sub-assembly before painting as well, because some stuff, like painting the chest below where they are holding their rifle, becomes way too hard, so you'd just do something like the arms separate from the rest of the body, as well as the base afterwords, so you can get between the legs easier, too.
To start, I do recommend using their brand of paints, as they can be used right out of the pots, and apply very nicely, even if you don't use a primer first.
Fuck their brand brushes, though, $5 Walmart brushes work fine, and are stupid cheap to replace.
Pic is what I've done as described.
