Is it true that storing minifigs standing on a baseplate makes the legs wear out and crack?

I have a few legos that are old enough to be discolored and no longer fit together quite right anymore, the springiness DOES run out. I don't think it's ever going to crack though, it's just loose. and I don't know if it's better to store them plugged together or not, I'd have to do some more thorough science

I've gone through most of my minifigs that are connected to baseplates/plates and about 15% have at least 1 crack in one foot. They still clutch pretty well through, even the ones that have cracks in each foot.

And it's not an age thing either. I've got minifigs that I put on a baseplate 5+ years ago and they're fine, but on the flip side I recently bought a couple of the recent Orc CMFs and put them on a plate and with in about a week one of them had cracks on both its feet.
