>>10379170As a former Transformers collector, I can give some advice.
You've got several paths you can take.
>Masterpiece: the expensive route, with often complex transformations, and a heavy focus on Generation 1. Many characters haven't been made by Hastak, so you will need to fill the gaps with 3rd party (aka IP infringinging "knock off" companies that make characters that resemble the official characters but without Hasbro's licensing or approval.
Very expensive and space consuming.
>Chug:An acronym for Classics, Henkei, Universe, and Generations. Basically, most mainline Hastak stuff based on G1 characters with modes that aren't faithful to G1. So Megatron might look sort of like his G1 robot mode, but will turn into a tank, for example. Probably the cheapest option, since so many characters have been made many times.
Never overpay for a character to fill a slot unless you want that specific version, because some characters get new versions every time a new line starts.
>Legends:Good for those that are short on space.
They are little, and usually have more simple transformations, though these days there are 3rd party G1 Legends that are close to Masterpiece in accuracy.
They also scale well with citybots in many cases.
>Focus on your favourite incarnation:G1, Japanese G1, Beast Wars, Unicron Trilogy, Prime, Bayverse, or anything in between. Some, like Beast Wars, are getting Masterpiece representation these days, and some are even getting representation in the mainline recently, like G2 and Prime.
>Buy what you like:Do you like war machines? Sports cars? Trains? Focus on them. Some collectors focus on characters, or teams like the Dinobots or combiners.
Also, TFwiki is a good resource for what is rare, and figures to avoid, such as figures prone to Gold Plastic Syndrome.
