I've talked to small mall toy shop owners since I noticed a lot of them have a similar profile(generic name, a lot of KO chinese imports,constantly opening and closing )Malls are so dead that malls will often cut people who buy stores deals to buy multiple store spaces around the mall to make it seem less empty than they are. Usually these are on short leases so every few months they move around If they have enough stock they might divide stores into different fronts(one owner here has a store just for KOs and little kid stuff, and another one for NECAs and similar product)

I think at least half of these places are just people getting a place to store their collections and if they can sell shit at their markups, then it's just a bonus. The dude that owns the one in my mall sells more shit through his eBay shop than through the physical store but he just didn't have room to operate out of his house.

I think it's less about making a steady income and more about just using it as an opportunity to grow their personal collections. They seem to just put crappy stuff on the shelves and offer you store credit for your trade ins. They keep everything good for themselves or Ebay while you get to redeem your store credit for their shitty figs which you could find online for half the price. It's always a business kept amongst the family or close friends that way they don't have to pay real wages and only need to scrap enough together monthly to pay their building rent and utilities. Wouldn't even be surprised if they paid their employees with toys or store credit too. Can anyone actually recall finding anything rare at any of these types of stores? I know I can't.

That makes sense. Sad it has to come to that, but I guess better than nothing.
I have seen some cool stuff before, but it is more like 'nice to have' stuff vs actually 'I need to have this' stuff.
There was one selling entirely knock-offs. I was so disgusted that I wanted tell people walking in its all knock-off stuff. Buyer beware.

American here, I still see tons of kids playing with toys in my area. They all have bicycles, chalk, Nerf guns, trading cards and little army soldiers. I am certain they have LEGO, Transformers and toy cars too. Model kits are also becoming more popular than ever in the 6-14 age group.

It might be a regional thing, whenever I travel to the Northeast, I rarely see anyone below the age of 35 outside.

There was a store like that near me, it sold hats, vintage toys and comics, rented out consoles and sold various pop merchandise stuff. I always felt pressed to buy more but the prices were stupid and I'm not a martyr for someone else's dream. I quickly stopped going after a few weeks.

Not really, no. There is, however, always room for one or two stores like this, but they must have an on-line presence. For example, BBToys is a Beanie Baby seller with a large on-line presence that still seems to be making some money.

I've seen that a lot in retro game and comic/collectable places I've visited in recent years. Every single one has not just a shelf or two, but an entire wall of Pops that just sit there and collect dust because practically no one actually wants them. They just take up space that could be used for anything else because the store just can't get rid of them without taking a loss.

Yes, I see kids picking them out in Wal-Mart and craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael's. Some discount chains also stock kits too (one had a pick-a-kit for $1.00).
