The same way you "defend" ANY hobby; paying money, or putting in time, gives you happiness in exchange. The actual means don't matter, so in my eyes, horse-back riding, recreational shooting, portrait painting, building cars, playing cards, buying toys, it's all the same. Some require time/effort, others require money, most do both, in the end, it's all the same.
Let's be real, functionally, what's the difference between one person watching football games, cheering on his team, grilling ribs and shit, buying and wearing their merch, with someone who buys army men and makes dioramas to display said army men? Both are enjoying what they like, and buying a bunch of shit in order to indulge in.
There is no difference in that, and anybody that thinks that one is better than another has some emotional growing to do.
