To expect a new mask in a GWP is silly. If this 2025 thing actually happens then if they're using SCCBS I could see them expanding the parts assortment with heads, feet, hands, and making dedicated masks for them, and probably also lean into the collectible aspect again. Masks packs returning, and probably throw in parts to build a random Matoran in there so it costs more but it'd also be good for world building. I wonder if they'll shrink the core cast, and introduce a rotating cast instead. Would be a good excuse to bring in all sorts of random Toas like Gravity and Plasma. Or it could be terrible and flop, who knows.

It the leak is true, G3 is most likely late in the concept phase (think "Bone Heads of Voodoo Island", G1 Bonks in their embryonic phase).

I think like the GWP, but a bit bigger, for the Toa. Buildable type figures will be the Titans of the Theme. Having them this size could actually allow for the sense of scale that was often described in the books, but just weren't possible with the original sets, so something like 100 dollar sets would be massive compared to the Toa, fit for things like the Tahtorak, or Miserix.

I reckon it'll be largely based on the sort of builds we saw with Spider-Man/Miles, Venom and Ant-Man, GWP style for more entry level sets like the Protectors in G2. If that's the case there's going to be more seething on this general than there was for G2. This is all assuming this leak isn't complete bullshit, of course.

I'm pretty sure the G3 team wants to distinguish themselves from capeshit by using a mix of currently produced technic pieces (e.g. pic related), whilst designing new ones around them. This is rather tricky for the G3 team, since a lot of the technic pieces in production are designed for car paneling.

Boss, themes are in development 2-3 years before release. G2 began development in 2012 as far as I know and released in 2015. Nexo Knights in 2009 and Ninjago in 2008.

An issue in Bionicle for Lego has always been about dedicated molds that can't or rarely be reused. It's possible they go back to Technic, but it feels like brick built is a real possibility.

Either way, I hope they learned their lessons from G1 and G2, and all the various shortcomings that lead to the decline of the Theme. There's no reason why Bionicle can't be a strong lasting Theme for Lego.

It won't have the same magic as G1 did, it's just gonna be another reboot, and we'll never get the same molds ever again (even CCBS is dead) but let the kids of today have their own theme with its own identity rather than fail to live up to what came before

The lore world building may not be as good as it was, but if the Toa and Matoran are sized similarly to the GWP ones then the physical world building would actually be better than ever. Buildable Suva, giant Rahi that are far larger than the Toa, other notable locations/enemies, vehicles, it could be cool. And who knows, maybe if it's a 9-16 or whatever they want to list it as, we might get some decent lore content. If they do a show I would also guess they'll do a comedic type show, but no reason that can't also be deep by some measure as well.

If anything I'd blame the real decision makers. The people who work there now, or at least a good chunk of them, were Bionicle fans. I think they should be able to come up with something good. I think the point of controversy will be whether the application is done well, like a System vs Technic thing.

It depends on what they opt for. If it's System, any new piece they make for it will find its way to Ninjago and other Themes, aside from masks, if they do those. Weapons, hands, heads, armor pieces, etc could all make their way to other sets. I don't think there's any chance of stickers. If they managed prints on a GWP, they'll at least get printed if not molded details.

Far as I know there hasn't been any set limitations since, aside for some single themes (I think there was a Friends one, and in May there's a Star Wars one). A way to do it would be to go the route of the turaga. Looking at them, they're basically just generic technic pieces as the body and limbs. You could use generic pieces to put together bodies of various sizes instead of having dedicated gear box pieces for every new wave. You would mainly need new masks and weapons which is kinda the bare minimum.

Basically imagine a designer being tasked with creating a GWP with current existing technic pieces. You could probably still make something resembling a Bionicle.

Even small things like rocks or trees to pose with potential Toa would just raise the price for little more than smaller display pieces that mostly likely won't be used. If anything I think it'd be better to opt for vehicles, or maybe significant landmarks, like the Suva. Also with the scale of the characters, assuming they're around the size of the GWP, any measure of a significant play set would be quite pricey.

I can visualize such things. I sometimes think about how pieces will interact to form the shape I'm looking to achieve, or how a color scheme between parts will look like together, but the results of those thoughts don't form an image. No need to wait for an anniversary, just throw them in whenever, really. I don't think they'd even need any new parts for a CMF, just an extensive print. If they actually made a new helmet for the mask that would be nice, but usually CMF exists for new parts that could be used elsewhere, and a new Bionicle themed mask mold wouldn't likely to be used much, so that doesn't seem likely.

I find it rather sad how Lego is still missing the pont and failing to understand just what was so alluring about the original line. If this happens, and it's brick built, it'll be a dedicated character builder, mostly likely, kind of like Mixels were, and there aren't any themes like that going on right now, so it'd be wholly unique, actually. With a few new slopes and pieces that are molded with more details, even more so.

After all, the masks don't move or change. They're emotionless, or, If anything, some of them have a mean glare built into the eyeholes. This works with the tone of the setting, because these are not humans. They are alien cyborg robot beings. The Matoran may act funny and do humanlike things, but just look at them... Things should rightfully feel a little bit off.

A dreamworks smirk with a raised eyebrow and gross realistic lips just completely ruins this entire tone.

I don't disagree, but it's Lego, it was cutesy ultimately and they had their humor in there, so a character that can smile and laugh is important. Could you imagine a closeup shot of Lewa's face/mask and him telling a joke then laughing, then the others start laughing as well with their faces completely covered. It'd come off as weird in the context of a movie for kids.

Also they're technically biological and robotic, so while the toys look entirely robotic, they're canonically partially biological, with organs, and mouths, etc. With that train of thought it isn't too hard to see why the masks would be almost like Glatorian helmets, with proper faces under there. I personally was always toys first and everything else after, so those are naturally my preferred looks.

A few threads ago I said something about there being multiple different canons/universes, because clearly the sets haven't had fingers for a long time, until Glatorian era sets, and no organs ever, so we can't technically say our toys represent the same exact characters as in the books, for example.

Bionicle is a chronicle. A story. Stories have different storytellers. Spoken word tales passed down over generations don't exactly need one single canon to be told. A strict, single perspective "true canon" is fucking asinine to maintain when there are so many variations. Something like this thrives when the canon is fluid and you can pick and choose from multiple interpretations.

What are some parts of canon you can't wrap your head around or think are dumb?
For me, it's apparently that a Toa of Iron could hypothetically manipulate anyone in the universe's body since they are all robots made of metal. In one of the serials Zaria uses his iron power to make other toa simply drop to the ground.
It makes no sense why the great beings would make an elemental power that allows an individual to freely puppeteer everyone else in the verse. It would make far more sense that the bodies the MU beings are made out of are simply a different/special type of metal that a Toa of IRON can't manipulate.

Just like the "water" in the Matoran Universe is made of liquid protodermis, yet elemental powers work on it. The whole thing with protodermis is that it can pretty much be any substance that exists, and some that don't.

I think most of the secondary elements are kinda jank conceptually because iirc they only exist in the story because of fans asking greg “hey i have a toa of turds, can that be canon?” and then greg adding the element to the story to make it canon.
While there are some secondary elements I personally like, like Iron, and Lightning, most of them probably should’ve stayed either as non-Toa/Matoran elements or mask powers.

That's just your subjective interpretation of how the sets look. They were designed that way so that they could loosely grip the mask. There are lots of different ways to interpret the sets and pretending that yours is the only objectively correct one is goofy

Honestly the ending is fine the way it is. 2009 wasn't as interesting as they wanted it to be, but what it did do is add a little context for the GSR and a setting for the final battle to take place. If the series had ended with the GSR rising, it wouldn't be enough. 2009-10 set up the climax of two planet sized robots punching eachother just well enough for me to be satisfied with the massive scale of that conclusion, which I feel was the highest note things could have ended on by that point.

The issue is it did continue into a bunch of tangled mess of loose-ends. You'd have to continue with the whole Velika and Annona shit. You can't just sideline the Lucifer and a primordial witch old as the planet.

One way to do it would be to se it further in the future but that would still leave way too much open. You'd still be left with the question of how you ended up in this future, what happened with the whole great beings and shit.

A good mask should be universally applicable, you should be able to make many different characters with different visual personalities using the same mask and it's recolors. The mata masks, including the turaga ones, with their focus on large smooth shapes and geometrically primitive mechanical detailing, were good at this.
From nuva onwards masks started getting complex detail elements and shapes, which made them more "individual" and thus less useful for making multiple new characters

There's a time and place, probably. Like unique masks for characters where their position is unique, whether they're incredibly important, powerful, or what have you. For example Axonn and Brutakas masks don't really work with others, and so do the Nuva. It also helps separate the regular characters from the big heroes. For example Hahli with the exact same mask as Gali is a bit weird.

Perhaps, which is probably why I didn't mind it as much with the Mata, compared to the Nuva masks. The masks were just so weird you could tell the average villager wouldn't wear it. I'm not a huge fan of the re-use, but it's certainly better than every villager has the same mask (ie. the Protector masks).

I've got a never-gonna-happen want for a series (novels, I guess? Don't care) focusing on Fe-Matoran pre-purge (and maybe some of the others, I think gravity and magnetism might have also been effected in the genocide) making exo suits and fighting [something] because they have no toa nor turaga. Throw in some other elements for variety like plasma or lightning too.

I had a horrifying idea. Imagine, if you would, a Matoran who really hated how he wan by s completely helpless and needed the Toa for everything.
So he starts basically self-rebuilding with all the shit he can get his hands on, effectively rebuilding himself into a hulking engine of devastation. This also makes him go crazy from both a combination of an unrestrained self-destructive power trip/hero fantasy and how much strain it’s putting on his system to maintain.

Why would they have done that? I could see them trying to do more mechanical details like they almost did for G2, but not outright old molds. Gear functions could appear but not long stiff limbs, CCBS paved the road for more articulation in all sizes and there's no unpaving that.

Using existing parts or their own unique parts? I'd say Grievous looked like he fit quite well, and some others like K-2S0 (or wherever the hyphen is), so I'd probably make them being robotic a prerequisite. These are construction toys, so to look good they probably have to look good in parts. Maybe something like Pacific Rim would have worked, but I can't think of all that many franchises featuring mostly robotic characters.

This one is actually pretty simple. There are a lot more than the basic 6 elements, like plantlife, sonics, iron, magnetism, etc, but most of them are in different islands or whatever. Back in 06 when we were going to a new island above the gsr, they felt the need to explain why it was still just the 6 elements: There WERE more, (Iron primarily) that were purged by the Makuta because of how effective they would have been against them if they ever became Toa (since Makuta are basically gas in an armored shell, if a toa of Iron contorts the metal shell, gas leak, makuta dies.) Ignoring that Toa don't kill on principle generally (with plenty of exceptions it seems, like Tuyet) it was a pretty logical move for the Makuta and made room for a mostly unpopulated island of misfit matoran for the inika to "liberate" from the Piraka.

Come to think of it even a Godzilla line would be cool, they already did kaiju with Hero Factory and despite most of them being organic it should still work. Halo would have been great (customizable armor would translate well to a system that lets you mix and match easily). Gundam maybe? Or any of the many Japanese IPs featuring giant robots.

Got these 3 mixed in a lot. The Kaiju are very underrated (the heads anyway). Was there a combiner model to make him with 3 heads like King ghidorah? I need the extra plates and bones so I’m gonna combine them into one beast.

The plant thing is also extremely interesting. It’s surprisingly high detailed for whatever it is. I’m surprised it’s not used more in a biollante moc or similar.
