It's the same reason that superheros need kid sidekicks, cartoons need to be about kids, and characters need to be race swapped. They can't like characters they do not see their own image reflected in. So they assume kids are the same way. Batman isn't like them so they can't identify with him. So a new character must be made or changed to where they can see themselves in.
All things must match the dead ugliness they see on the inside.
