At this moment, a brave, Systemchad who had played with Legos as a child while watching Star Wars hundreds of times and understood the necessity of of Legofying the power of the Force and fully supported all licensing decisions made by TLG came out of his dark age and replied.

"Did Bionicle save Lego from bankruptcy, virgin?"

The arrogant bonklet smirked quite Kraahkanly and smugly replied "Yes, you stupid systemfag."

"Wrong. Star Wars saved Lego. If it were Bonkles as you say... then why could it not save itself?"

The bonklet was visibly shaken and dropped his Axalara T9 and binder full of hand-drawn Toa porn. He fled the thread crying those cheeky croc-flavored tears. The same tears bonklets cried when TLG supported their System fans and made a System Bonkle set. There is no doubt that at this point our bonklet wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a constraction hack. He wished so much he could strangle himself to death with Meltdown's whip due to the shame but the lime piece had already crumbled into dust!

The /lg/ anons applauded and became SystemStarWarschads sworn to keep buying all the X-Wing remakes that day and accepted Lego Sheev Palpatine as their rightful emperor. A new series of grey box set leaks flew into the thread and spammed fuzzy images and caused many tears to be shed. Polish Lego magazines with superprezents were read several times, and printed arms Boba Fett himself showed up as a reissue and utterly devaluated the existing figs.

The bonklet lost all his rare masks and was laughed out of /biog/ the next day. He tried to keep the "Bionicle saved Lego" myth alive but soon after bought a UCS Canto Bight and was saved from eternal damnation.

So I'm finally resorting my collection. I tried by part type because people have sworn up and down that by color is a bad idea, but it's so irritating having so many little ziploc bags I have to dig through just to get to that one bag with like ten pieces. The fact they're all rainbow colors actually makes it harder finding the individual bags themselves, and I think by color is the way to go. Wish me luck.

I do with a mixture of both, but depends on how many pieces you have of each.
For example, I have my red, blue and yellow plates in one place, but all teal pieces in another place (Two bags: one for small 1x1 or 2x2 pieces, and another for bigger teal stuff).
Or in another case the opposite, I have a bag with 1x1 trans neon cones and another one with every other 1x1 cone, and they are about the same size.
Regular studs are all in one bag, except fo rare colours. The weirder studs like tiles, hollows, or nipple ones are all in the same bag no matter the colour.

Its lego's design from tahu's set not mine, but here's a great tip for building things with joints, put a little baby powder on the ball and socket, doesn't need to be much, just cover both surfaces and then tap a little to remove the excess, it is literally invisible to see and it makes the joints very stiff, you still can move it fairly easy with your hands but they become able to sustain a surprisingly amount of weight.

Minifigure parts, specialized things like plants or utensils, will be separated by type. Maybe the rarer parts like vintage or printed stuff in it's own baggie. Generic parts will just mainly be by color and by what umbrella (Technic or System) it goes under.

If you have a small varied inventory and kinda know what kind of pieces you have then by color is good. Like if you need that one long plate or printed slope you are positive you own, you can just reach into the right stockpile and do minimum searching. At higher volumes and varieties sorting by type is better. Say you need a tap but you can't tell what colors you may have, reach into the tap box and find the best fit.
Whatever choice is up to you in the end since you can still use 30L tubs and build fine, just slower

Part type is the way to go. The only exception is storing brittle or special colors like brown, dark red, or classic gray separately. Depending on collection size you can save a lot of space by stacking plates together in a staggered fashion that is easy to pull apart. Cheap toy bins and harbor freight toolboxes are very cheap. The toolboxes are especially great because they have removable cubbies that make part-seeking very easy. Depending on your collection size and personal autism I also recommend inventorying everything on a site like Rebrickable so you can know every last piece in your collection without having to seek it out. It's really nice when you can quickly whip out your phone while building and know whether you have only one of that obscure piece in that obscure color, or two, before you even get up to look.

I might just do this honestly. Although I still would rather have parts partially color separated. I get too nitpicky with things like, for example, plates. Personally I find part type much easier to seek by than color, especially when a lot of the nitpicky things you're mentioning like the 2x4 vs. 2x3 is either identical or WAY worse by color. Seeking a particular size part in a sea of identically-colored parts sounds like a nightmare. The color actually helps differentiate what you're looking at. I group my staple bricks by size, usually separating them by 1xN, 2xN, evens, odds, etc. That's enough of a compartmentalization for me; any more cutting-up than that and I'd run into the same problem you briefly mentioned: the organization system not actually making anything faster.

The biggest thing is just picking a convention and sticking to it. It gets a lot faster to find pieces when you've used the same system long enough to form kinesthetic memory. Esp. with my toolboxes it took me a bit to learn which box was which when going only by feel.

May as well build on the existing classic revival. Start off with Black Falcons, Lions, Forestmen, and Dragon Masters. Have a medium to large set for each faction's castle/base (except lions since there already is one). Various smaller sets will have soldiers and civilian buildings, siege engines, small outposts/watchtowers, wall segments, etc. There will also be a Lion king.
The second wave will introduce Wolfpack and have a stronger civilian focus, also incorporating the existing factions.
The third wave will introduce more fantasy elements including a skeleton army, dwarves, elves, and orcs.
Later waves might introduce new factions as subjects of the Lion kingdom (like in the original castle line) or just continue the old ones as an evergreen theme.

I vaguely remember reading on the Brickarms forum a decade ago that small-scale test molds cost $100 and full-scale production ones cost $1000. I'm sure the price of injection molds varies a lot based on size, level of detail, and especially inserts for complex shapes. Wherever you got that figure for $10000 may not be applicable to the Lego gun scene.

There are much more elementary aspects to mold fabrication that you need to master first. Beyond the simple things like fabricating to tolerance, you also have to develop the skills necessary to bring an item from draft, to prototype, to master. ABS injection molding is not simple, it's a balance of pressure control, temperature control, material handling (mostly humidity), and good production/QC. I say it's a long road because you should really start with something low-risk and low cost like wood, or sand casting. There are principles you need to develop before getting anywhere close to your final goal. Not a deterrent; a dose of perspective.

Homie please read what I'm typing. It's not just about fabrication. There's an entire process to creating objects that only *ends* with fabrication. If you really don't have any elementary design principles you're only going to feed whatever machine shop is unlucky enough to contract with you some useless slop design you can't use. By your mentality, you have three checks to write: one for a draftsman to draft you a prototype, a machine shop to fabricate it, and a shop to perform the actual injection. Repeat the process for the multiple prototypes you should expect to order. This way in the end you can get exactly what you want and you don't even need to learn anything.

I suggest either taking your research to the greater internet using keywords like "home injection molding" "ABS injection molding parameters" etc. or calling an injection shop and asking what they expect to receive from you when ingesting a job. Depending on your luck you'll likely find a shop that can do both drafting and machining for the mold, but you might not be able to hit all three birds and have them also perform the injection. Those kinds of things are quoted for scale so obviously the more parts you make, and the less shops you have to contract, the more economic sense it makes.

Absolutely do not waste time designing a buck digitally if you don't know what they require in real life. You need to have a phone call with someone to determine what services are practical and what you need to provide to them in order for them to do it. Your CAD may waste time instead of save it if they have to redo everything or instruct you to. At this point I would begin making the positive form, i.e. the actual bingus, but not the mold itself until you know more.

While it is possible to purchase a quality tabletop injection machine that regulates temp and pressure for <$600, I'm assuming you don't have many or *any* tools (I'm not counting mandatory homeowner shit). That's why I'm adamant that you sort-of keep this ambition in your pocket and begin with woodworking, wax casting, or something elementary like that so you can get a good foundation for design before you waste all this time and effort contracting a gaggle of shops to make something you don't even know if you can use or afford.

Simply, yes. For ABS you need to make sure you buy a rig that can regulate both temperature and pressure, which is a bit more expensive and complicated than the typical press-style injector. I would usually recommend steel for molds just because it's simple and bulletproof but if you only plan on making a few hundred or thousand casts then an adequately-hard aluminum might be okay and would certainly be cheaper. Rate my another Ideas. Still WIP, but not much left. Gian't was so good I decided to go with the flow and go with Castle theme again. First, I tried to make a traveling magic merchant, with 4 stud wheel base, but turned out, after all these years, Lego still havent made a 2 x 2 arch, so I had to made it wider, overall 6 stud wide. I know, I know, it looks kinda shitty from playability perspective, but it's Ideas, it can't look normal or people wont take the bait. I'm going to add ton of merch, a merchant, girl with medium sized legs, and a female masked thief, because it's Lego world, the most dangerous place to live in.

Right. I'll look something like this. You can also find versions where the pneumatic cylinder is air/fluid driven with a simple set of valves instead of fully by-hand like the one pictured. I'd still considering that a "hand" system versus actual automated systems you'd see in a factory or at Lego. My $600 estimate is just based on seeing various models floating around the $300-$1000 range. I don't actually know what it'll cost or if you could find one aftermarket for a reasonable price - that will depend on which injector you actually decide to pursue.

Despite my initial call for caution, I do wish you luck. I come from a very pragmatic background and grew up with lots of rich senseless morons, so that's why I lean towards the "if you don't know how, just don't" mentality. Sorry for that. I still suggest that you take up an easier and less costly method of making new things like woodworking so you can build up the kind of intuitive design mentality that will last a lifetime and apply to every new technique you adopt.

I assume the tolerances aren't as good. Too tight, too loose. That said, Lego quality has gone to shit so who knows which is worse quality at this point.
But did you ever have any Lego knockoffs like MegaBloks? If so you would know that knockoffs often just have really bad tolerances. At least 20-something years ago when I was a kid, MegaBlocks would hardly even stay together they were so loose.

The bootlegs I had hurt to the touch and made my skin crawl, had the wrong colors, broke easily and were both too tight and too loose. Depends on the manufacturer and brand, not all plastic is the same and not all toys are made from the same plastic. If it's just for display then at worst you can glue them.

Generally the quality is pretty bad. Here's a comparison between bootleg and Lego-brand beams. The laundry list of problems:

Good looking out though. I just thought by now this shit would be better but I guess it might not be so. A lot of the ones on Ali don't list a manufacturer, especially for technic sets so it's hard to say and I have no real measure of quality. It is mostly for display purposes but I don't care to glue things.

Thanks for the heads up. I might get a cheap technic and see how it fares before maybe spending more or something if I'm happy with it. I guess I can expect to possibly run into some issues. One good thing is I'm pretty new to lego, so a lot of the shitty quality I probably won't notice or have a keen eye for just yet. I don't actually own a lego technic set either for comparison sake.

In fairness to you, Technic is the autist's Lego, when Lego is already the autist's toy. Will freely admit that most minor bugs I have with Chinese legos tend to be with Technic pieces. Had to replace the original pins for the engine pods of this Wange Osprey with Lego ones as the former lacked enough friction; even the Lego ones struggle with the weight but that's more of a design flaw.

Built a couple of rivaling brands (Bluebrixx, Qman, etc.) and one fuck-up they all seem to do is moulding 99% of their bricks in a single type of plastic while Lego, IIRC, uses like a dozen different ones.
Exo Force arms, clips, minifig handcuffs - they're all made of bog-standard ABS instead of something softer like Lego does, resulting in such fun things like clips having extremely visible stressmarks on the inside after a single fucking use.

Hey, could I have a lil help finding pictures of some dudes hero factory/bionicle MOC? I'm an old MOCpages user who can't find shit that I've been looking for. He made something sorta like this but MUCH bigger and fire color/themed, even did some photoshop and backstory for it

yup, it looks to me like it's all lego a combination of hero factory, bionicle and technic pieces. it's wearing the Toxic Reapa headbit from the former franchise
