Harmony Gold then took advantage of a sleazy law that says if you change enough of the content of something, then you can legally copyright it as your own distinct version.
So HG re-names the show, re-names some characters, and changes the script to where hardly any sentence is a direct translation of the original script. And with that, HG owns worldwide rights to all things Robotech, and if Big West tries to sell anything Macross outside of Japan, HG has the courts shut Big West down.
The short-sighted catch is HG was only able to steal the Macross that existed back then, whih was the first two anime series. After that, Big West kept producing new Macross with new Valkyries and characters and such, and HG can't touch them. Though HG has tried to lay a claim to both Macross 7 and Macross Plus. They were denied in both cases.
And there's a ton of great designs, especially in the Bandai Macross line. I think it's fucking sleazy for Harmony Gold for all its stealing and all it did to harass the Macross fans importing the real Macross to have the balls to present their shit in Japan using a Japanese company, obviously to try to legitimize their version as part of the real core Macross.
