Hasbro has been boasting about 3d scans since the mid-00s. Practically every movie line has the actor being scanned.

Problem is you're too used to seeing the actors on a 2d screen, in 2d photos, with a ton of make up on and 3-5 layers of photoshopping.

Sculpting is fine for the most part, it's the printing tech that needs to improve. Customizers are taking the head and repainting them and they look much closer to the actual person. It's usually the bugeye that gets fixed.

Habro has fire said girl and uses automated printers now for faces. The problem is, the designer still trying to make the face look like an 11 year old painted it, when they can acheive the look on the right with said printer. They 4+ on the box is holding all of Hasbro's "collector lines" back due to trying to make the figures look like traditional toys.

Most companies still use spray masks and tampographs, ontop of those printed stickers (face print), that also need to be placed onto the face (hand centered on a machine, hence being crooked from time to time).

look closesly at your figures. Anything that's solidly painted is either a spray mask or tampograph. anything that's a bunch of dots is the print.
Pretty much every company started doing this layered effect since 2018. Even Bandai started doing it after like 8 years of cheapassness.

Patently false. Good Figuarts-styled prints will always give a much better, more consistent and realistic finish for the price than retail-level "traditional" paintjobs. Yes, if you employ a highly skilled painter to hand-paint the face it will look somewhat better in macro shots than a print, but that's not viable for mass production figures and even if it were, would not provide sufficient improvement over prints to make the vast increase in cost worth it.

They started doing the same shit DC Direct did, which Hasbro, Mattel, McFarlane, NECA, Mafex, and many other companies copied years ago. It only took Bandai 8 years to catch up.

With a macro lens, sure. With the human eye when looking at a figure in a display or during regular posing, not at all.
On the other hand you have shit like McFarlane's anime figures, with the baffling decision to use lumpy paint for everything.

If the accessories were designed better and didn't look so cartoony, it would've been a better deal. Pack it with all sorts of detailed weapons and treasures and it would've been a great accessory pack set and storage container. Also the cube itself could've been done better, more texture and thicker walls to better hide the fact it's basically a plastic box would've really helped out.

But I don't think they really expected that set to "wow" people. It was more of a tease to the future of the toyline, and the first stuff out of a new line is always kind of hinky.

In other news, got an email that Xanathar should be shipping soon. I'm curious how the eye moves, whether it's geared to something or you just move it yourself. Would've been nice if his eyelid could also move, but i guess that would be hard to engineer properly.

There are so many better ways they could have approached to making a slime cube than just a tupperware box.
They could have done something like pick with a plug at the bottom, that way the tabs and cross braces wouldn't be showing up. A nice squishy thing.

Hasbro starts way early on figures from pre-production info sent over. Famously GI Joe Rock's movie figure was way off until he posted on-set pics while they were wrapping up the sculpt at Hasbro. This gave them the chance to put it on hold and update

Someone actually watched the GI Joe movie to realize the Rock toys were off?

Was there even a newly sculpted Rock release after it got that year delay? All i really remember was just overlays/gears being new, but that's so common, in that the first two waves had 3 or 4 different versions of the Rock.
You have to remember that Hasbro already had the GI Joe sequel toys on the shelves two months before it got that year delay. So there were two and a half waves released, with the half wave being a case revision that added the Bruce Willis and Lady Jaye toy.

By the time the movie actually came out, Target and Walmart didnt bother carrying the new waves. They had already quit the line by clearancing out the first two waves the previous summer.

Yes, yes you are.
Also reminder that more expensive to produce =/= better. Mezco Darkseid is expensive to produce due to being made of fucking polystone, but that doesn't improve him at all and he's still a POS for the price you pay. Friend of mine got him for like $70 and he's OK at best for the price, apparently, but he'd never have paid full price for that thing. Likewise, fully painting a figure based on a cartoon/anime with flat colours may cost more than just using a good matte plastic but is objectively worse.
Figuarts faceprints were always more than sufficient without the additional paint. I'm sure the new ones with it look good (Bandai-style printed faces positively mog traditional face paint at most price points) but it seems like gilding the lily to me.
Again, though, I don't understand people who buy tiny versions of celebrities. Seems weird. Stylized figures have far more charm and tend not to age as poorly as "realistic" ones.

Like I say, I don't buy figures of IRL people. Shit's weird, and all the figures available tend to be from movies I don't care about anyway. Only one I've considered is Mafex Robocop, because that's from what I've seen a great figure and I love the film. However, objectively Bandai's faceprinted figures have always blown the competition out the water, and if I did care about owning a tiny version of some obnoxious Hollywood retard in cosplay as a children's comic character then I'd go Figuarts 99% of the time.

I could use one of those dragons for the animated kids. Shame they didn't make a tiamat in the same way. Probably would have sold better versus generic dragon that appears for 5 secs.

I just discovered Capcom made a D&D arcade in the 90s. Which company would likely snag the license if they ever make figures? NECA, Hasbro, or JADA as they're partners with Capcom to make all their game figures in the western markets?

So far this is and the Owl-Bear are the only good D&D toys over the past few years of Hasbro making some.
The cube is laughable and even at $15 is overpriced, the movie humans are so-so; fine for generic fantasy people in your collection I guess. The dragon would be ok but the body is too thin and ends up looking really bad. The cartoon figures actually get a mild pass because they do look good, just wish they had more poa.
Suppose I am being picky, but this whole venture could have easily been better with equal amount of effort.
Honestly, the Neca D&D figures are more worth buying at this point.

Guenhwyvar is a great figure too, just being a very poseable panther figure at 6” scale alone is enough reason to grab the 2-pack. On a related note, when is the Displacer Beast supposed to hit the shelves?
