Not really sure, but I do know there is an outstanding channel on youtube called Barcode Battler Museum thats incredibly helpful for just about anything barcode battler related.

Dudes pretty decent as well. Has a website, but since its only him working on it, it is sort of lacking. But still an incredible reference to BCB.

There used to be this early smartphone mobile game called Barcode Kanojo, we sure had tons of fun hunting for rare animu girls by scanning barcodes in /v/ back then.

Why don't smart watches just have this via wifi direct or nfc or something? This seems like it could be used in a much more intuitive way in our current year.

Kids don't care about handling shit, that's why pokemon go went downhill fast. Too much actual activity and just easy brain dead gameplay. They can't even be guided in with a cartoon or something because kids don't watch those either.

There's not much collecting, just nurturing. If you mean the tamagotchi style ones. I don't know how the digivices work.

IIRC, Digimon did do a a scanner type of device, but it was mainly just pushing their own shitty TCG booster packs

It was the early 2000's. Everyone was doing card scanner toys, and most of them were pretty lame. Not quite a proper TCG, not really a toys-to-life game. Not quite augmented reality. Kind of a weird fad when you think about it.

it wasn't necessarily to push the TCG. Each Digivice had a gimmick (season 1 and 2 could detect electronic waves, Tamers had card reading but not really, you had to input the codes manually) Frontier's D-Scanner had you scan any barcode to catch em all and find fights and items, and after that they added barcodes to the cards to make the card slash thing that Tamers attempted actually cool
