It only bugs me on the level that instead of trying to make new interesting characters that are good, they just take an old property and race swap. Why make new characters like Static Shock or Luke Cage when we can just take Peter Parker, change his name, and make him black? Almost the exact same back story but now he's black. It's just trying to get brownie points in order to come off as giving a damn. Instead of trying to rewrite history why not make new long lasting stories and characters that just happen to be black? Hell when they do try that it ends up coming off as trying too hard. Just make fun likeable characters.
I saw someone say this in a thread and it's true: that regardless of how good or bad this new Little Mermaid is the toys will sell because little girls will see a movie they like because kids like all sorts of crap. They'll want merch of it. In a way I find it charming because to these kids there is no race issue. Though it wouldn't be there even if she was white because again they just see fun princessy movie.
