It mostly comes down to when you take a step back from any nostalgia associated with the games and take a more critical ear to his overall acting which starts to get weird in MGS3 with odd enunciation in his speech to heavily forced in PW that just makes it unlistenable at times.
For the record, I think he's brilliant in 1, 2 and 4. I prefer 1 over 2 but that's mostly because I like the more gruff sound in his voice compared to 2's more smooth tone.
Anyway, hope we get some new good MG figures that aren't more Play Arts. A good MGS1 Snake that isn't the PAK or RevoMini would be my knoe.
