Googled the groundwar set so this is also usefull info for me.
Gunpla is not my usual fair, got that char zaku while visiting another city and popping into random modeltrain store who also hapened to have some gunpla and other imported kits.
Is the zaku also not worth it to put in diorama? Articulation issues can be solved if it only has to pose once, or does it lack details?

Would be ok in a diorama. The articulation is kinda ass but not unusable. Just looks a bit bad next to the newer zakus. I still like it's looks somewhat, but it is the downside to that set.

Thnx for the info, cool diorama setup you have and that pic gives a good comparison. Been doing some more searching on it, I can get the Zaku alone for less then half of the kitprice so then it comes down to what other anon said last thread (if that was not also you) do I think the extra stuff is worth it. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a good deal

Thanks. I generally try to be helpful in these threads, as the negativity has hampered posting here. That zaku set is nice for the extras, tjey make it worth it alone, the zaku is the weak point but isnt the worst. I wouldnt pay over 30 for it though. Newtype did has them for 27 so not too bad but I wouldn't bother with just that. Wish bandai did more ex model type of kits or had blond boxes of little 1/144 vehicles seen in the shows.

I think a few 30MM can be easily converted to quadrupeds. I also remember another model that provided joints to convert to quadruped if you bought two but I can't remember the line.

Properly dried and cured paint won't have an issue. Just go with Mr Super Clear UV or whatever Tamiya's matte coat is called. Paint a spoon, let it dry and cure, spray top coat on.

Only time I've seen a lacquer topcoat from Tamiya or Mr. Hobby fuck up an acrylic paint was when some idiot applied it onto wet paint. Assuming its dried and fully cured through, there's no issue in using lacquer.

I've never actually tried sanding primer. What ones are sandable? I have mr surfacer 1500 and a couple gaia nazca mechanical surfacers

all primers are sandable since that's what they're supposed to do with it. 500 is coarse and usually used to fill out micro scratches and sink marks before you sand it off. then follow it up with 1200 has finishing coat to give the paint a amooth surface to bite into.

that is tamiya liquid surface primer in the picture, afaik all lacquer primers are sandable but acrylics are not.
I'd make the argument for tamiya being better because of better adhesion which matters though mr. surfacer is completely fine.

Somehow I expected handrails to be the final boss of 1/700 PE, but it wasn't that bad actually. Installing 0.1mm posts to support the handrails was a bit tricky though.

aerosol paint is mixed with propellant, when you decant cans instead of spraying them a lot of it is left behind in the paint leaving a volatile liquid that if disturbed can chain reaction into a violent burst.
what I'm guessing happened here is that the paint "settled" and the trapped gases couldn't escape even after several hours - and alas, the metal ball disturbed the evil creature.

Thanks for the memories, had that exact shit happen to me once.

The right way to decant a can as it turned out is to keep the paint agitated throughout the process.
So now I just put a jar on a magnetic mixer, turn it on, decant the can and leave the mixer running for an hour or so. Then I add the thinner and close the jar. Never had any explosions since.

No, if you spray out a can of spray paint into a bottle and don't let it come back to the room temperature and don't let the propellant completely evaporate, throwing room temperature objects into said paint will cause the propellant to boil explosively.

ok thanks, so just so were clear ( I wanna paint someday and am saving this.) basically if you just spray out some types of paint into a bottle, don't let the paint & propellant go into room temp and evaporate respectively completely, it will explode?
just to put it simply.
Is this just if you just spray it out or does this apply to pouring it out too? I don't want to have an accident.

When you spray paint from a can into a container (and not into the open air), the propellant gets trapped and has no time to evaporate into the air (as it does when you spray paint a surface from a can).

The propellant then proceeds to evaporate at its natural rate, as it does the paint where it evaporates from (and the container where the paint is) gets cold (as to why, see physics textbook). Eventually it passes the freezing point (and the water that condensed on the container turns to ice).

You need to wait until the container warms up (on its own) back to the room temperature, which would indicate that the evaporation is finished. If you put anything into the container while it's still below room temperature, it will cause the remaining propellant to boil and make a mess.

In short, spray the paint into the container and leave it alone until it is not cold to the touch. Then you replenish the thinner (which also evaporated) and close the container. When you open it next time, do it slowly until you see no bubbles form upon opening.

Mixing the paint continuosly speeds up evaporation and minimizes thinner losses, but DON'T mix it with a stick, the mixer has to be the same temperature as the liquid, which is why magnetic stirrer works so well.

That's a real short straw, doesn't give the paint much time to expand until it hits the container. I use a 6"+ (20cm+) piece of silicone tube that fits the spray nozzle and dip the other end into the bottle.

I bought my first MG kit, I don't plan on doing anything special except actually caring enough to build it right, panel lining, and maybe topcoating. IDK if topcoating is worth it because I'm not going to paint it. If there are unpainted topcoating comparisons I'd like to see them.

The problem with spray cans is its really way too easy to do too much. Its definitely possible to get a perfect finish but its a lot harder than an airbrush because you have 0 fine control over it
So you don't do enough and it ends up like that but if you do too much it could be pooly and not end up looking good either. Even though it's a flat coat you still want a uniform wet layer of it when applying it

i used to airbrush acrylics into a cardboard box and my heatsink got all clogged up with paint in a few months (it was easy to clean though, just dunked it in iso). but just dust from sanding shouldn't be a problem, and even painting isn't a problem if you have an extractor booth

I'm not sure how others do it but I fully covered the spots with the pre shaded color. Then with the color on top I fully cover within that area and if some spillage gets on the preshaded color underneath that's fine because it'll soften it up a little bit.

Preshading is a fairly primitive technique, blackbasing works better for military subjects and regular "post" shading works better for everything else.

There is a whole theory about shading which you can google by yourself, but the basic idea behind the highlight/base/shadow is that you are simulating lighting as it would appear on a larger object.

Preshading, especially done by a beginner doesn't really simulate anything, it's just looks like overemphasized grime? on the edges and in the recesses.

Yes. I just decanted a can of Tamiya primer and I primed two 1/4 figures with it twice and I still have about 70% of it left.
If I primed them from the can, I would be buying a new can by now.

I paint models already and sell them I just use spray cans and paint brushes. Either with clean paint jobs or weathered in various ways. I like the subtle smooth shading that model has. it has its own appeal. It’s a distinct look.

I’d like to post them but I can’t think of anyway to do it without doxxing my account I sold model kits on. They weren’t amazing or anything. It takes a lot of patience and feeling to get good results from spray cans and I’d like to graduate to something more controllable. My thing I liked painting was just painting grunt suits in unique styles. Anyone can do that.

a built gunpla actually loses it value to almost worthless when you paint it, unless if you're a well-known artisan that can auction his works for thousands of dollars. what you can do though is accept commissions where someone will hire you to paint their kits. they usually pay a good sum, probably as high as a furry artist dependin on your skill.

I know some flips do it. they have customers that are rich enough to buy gunpla and build it themselves but poor enough to paint it because their home cannot accomodate it, so they commision a painter to paint the gunpla in their desired paint scheme and the prices scale up if you want it customized.

so yeah, it is a really good business.

It isn’t that profitable because of the time you invest. During Covid I wasn’t working so just tried getting better at painting, and I ended up selling some of them for some extra cash to buy stuff I wanted. If you live in a state with a low minimum wage it would be more lucrative than a state with a higher minimum wage if you factor in the time and hours spent making something. But like I said, even if you sell a kit you paint for 3 or 4 times the cost of the raw kit, unless you do it relatively quickly because you’ve built the kit like 10 times and have painted it and you can do it reasonably fast, the hours invested don’t make it lucrative. I just saw it as a convenient way to improve and make a small amount of money during Covid. If I add up the money I’ve made selling painted models or other collectibles I’ve probably made a few thousand dollars in profit over time. You can make more money in less time working in a minimum wage job if you add the hours up. But you can develop your skills this way if you’re going to paint them anyway and don’t want to keep all of them. If it wasn’t for being stuck inside during Covid I wouldn’t have probably done it. You don’t have to make something insane for someone to buy it. It just needs to be interesting enough for someone to want it.

That entirely depends what your thought process is. I’ve bought a few painted model kits some people were getting rid of. They weren’t done “perfectly” but they had a unique enough look that I thought I’d like to display that alongside my versions I’ve painted. maybe it sounds weird to you, but a painted model kit is kind of a 3dimensional art piece. You can hold it and rotate it around and admire it, and even the mistakes are interesting to look at and you can study it and try to understand what the persons thought process or approach was if you’re a model painter yourself. I find that fun, if you don’t get it you don’t get it. These are never kits painted in a typical color scheme and are usually unusual in some way which justifies buying them.

just to give some context: GMKC has a very strict "Out of the Box" rule, meaning modifying the plastic/ kitbashing is banned there, aside from very few exceptions such as V fin sharpening and split skirt. The competition is a matter of how good and creative your paintjob is. GBWC is where all the modified shit goes.

To explicitly describe the modification, it's basically snipping the strike noir armor to be more like the strike armor, which is just the small points in red. The top looks easy to cut off, the one sticking out to the outer side is a bit thicker

Start with a metal file or 400 grit sandpaper, it'll grind those parts down quick. For the last .5 mm use progressively higher sandpaper until 3000 or buffing stick. Even if you use a photoetch saw you'll still need to leave about the same .5mm allowance then finish it with high grit sandpaper especially if you don't paint

Ok, might be a stupid question but i don't find it anywhere else. I want to buy an air spray booth, but i'm concerned about the exhaust smell on the outside. TL;DR i live in a condo and i will be exhausting the fumes on a grate above a door at ground floor, which has a window 2 metres above and the door is placed where people pass to enter the building (we're still talking about outdoors, i won't be exhausting indoors), question is, do the exhaust fumes from the booth smell? I would be using mostly acrylics, but i'm concerned. Not really from a health standpoint, since i think the spray booth vent will take care of the paint particles, but because my neighbors get triggered from anything and if they catch a smell when coming home they'll surely make my life hell

First things first, there are currently 9 EAV kits, 13 if we're counting color variations. Which one of those would you happen to be looking for?

Figure that out, and figure out the code number for that kit. For example, optional kits are either "OP-##" or "W-##", while EAV's are '"EV-##".
If you're searching online, try using terms like "30MM", "Exa Vehicle", " EAV", "エグザビークル", the aforementioned code, and/or the name of the kit as written on the box (e.g. 30MM EV-12 Armored Assault Mecha).
Communicating with humans or homunculi in a physical store is a whole other can of worms, but in general you should try to look presentable, speak clearly and seem respectful. You could say something like, "Excuse me, do you have any 30 Minutes Missions kits available?" or the equivalent in your vernacular, then proceed from there.

If you're using acrylics no. They have a very very light odor and it goes away very quickly. Unless you're talking about "acrylics" that are acrylic lacquers like tamiya then those will have a stronger odor

IIRC, there's a couple of 1/200 GunPla and related vehicles, but it's only like a handful of models, and I'm also not sure if those would actually be smaller than the Armored Assault Mecha.

I can just have that one facing away, can't I? The SDCS Great (a fucking $20 kit can hold the boomerang, in his sword hand no less, while this $70 one can't!!) has the bit for the slot, but I can ignore it just fine. The Infinitism Great also has neat detail below the fin, so it's surreal that they just didn't let you hold the boomerang..

You could try the handshake hand, it's open enough if you wanted to stick it on with some double sided tape or what have you.
Great always seems to get the short end of the straw, dude is barely in Infinity and spends most of it captured, he's barely in Shin, spends most of Mazinkaiser absent. I'm just glad there's some Great fans in this world, he gets a great fight in Infinity, got Great Mazinkaiser and Mazin Emperor G, his kit is a ton of fun to build, his various SoCs and the MB are all great. Just gotta take the little wins.

It's still better than nothing.. the SD Z came with an effect part also, either they really don't give a shit about the Great, or they just assume that everyone would get Z first or eventually? But I assumed clear plastic was dirt-cheap, feels like they could have tossed some in there as a freebie..

I might have to go with this option, or just balance it precariously, depends. Seeing the sword also reminds me that I'd probably have to panel line, probably at least the vents. I've somehow messed up doing it before, I'd prefer not to have to take the risk again.

Absolutely. He got a cool opening fight in Infinity but that's about it. We were supposed to get Shin Great, but that's just a dream aside from a few SRW titles that deal with the aftermath. I was very happy with Great's treatment in the Mazinkaiser OVA and sadder movie, he and Tetsuya have been constantly portrayed as capable in their own right.

I build Z ,Great and Kaiser, but Z did nothing for me. It was an alright kit, and it and Great are pretty much the same in terms of build, but I think the Infinitism design doesn't do much for Z. If you like Z's design, I'd go for it, it's a nice modern Z kit.

A-anon there was a metal one from CC Toys. Unless you meant within Infinitism, in which case yeah, it's a bit more likely that they'll give ZERO his good buddy. Shin Getter is also an inevitability, considering they made Dragon and Arc.

The joint range could be better, but it's such a massive figure I give it a pass on stuff like that. The Mega Size Gundams were super limited pose-wise too, the heavy ratcheting joints kept them stable but didn't allow for much flexibility.

It's pretty clear that they had to cut some corners to keep the price down on these things, they're fucking massive. This is why Mega Size Gundams have even worse articulation than your average HGUC. The joints are big and simple, mostly built for load-bearing purposes instead of maximum range.
