It's gonna sound incredibly red-biased, but I liked Vakama Hordika. I liked the head and the fire swords were cool. Jaller Mahri was my favorite set, he was best proportioned, had a cool sword, and a pet crab that could hold the big and unwieldly cordak blaster. Hahli also looked good. I found Matoro to be one of the worst sets, putting character aside, he just seemed like a small little goblin with a weird claw weapon.

Nokama Hordika was my favorite, her face/mask looked the best to me and her ..anchor-like? weapon/tools looked super big and aggressive. Actually, I think the Hordika weapons were really good, it's just their colors that made them more limited in usage.
For favorite Mahri, it's probably Jaller, one of the best examples of how a canister set should be designed. DV is such a faggot for hating it.

Is the latter not just how you picked your favorites? I didn't follow the story back then, so I picked by favorite design, followed by favorite color (this would often influence the former), often leading me to red. I'm a younger brother so I'm used to my favorite not being the leader or the main character, so red being leader didn't really affect my choice. Kalmah was still my favorite Barraki, Malum Glatorian, etc.

Most of the time my parents got me the least popular canister sets (as those were the only ones left when they went to the store), the black Visorak, Piraka Zaktan, etc... Later when I had the opportunity to choose most of the time I either got the red ones or the ones I thought were the leaders of that team (which I often regretted later). When I was around 13-14 my parents decided I was too old for toys, so they refused to buy me any more Lego or Bionicle sets. But before that they only got me Bionicle sets for my birthdays and Christmas anyway with a few exceptions, and around that time my grandparents started giving me money for my birthdays/Christmas which I spent on Bionicle (which my parents still didn't like). Around that time I started to prefer the green ones (Phantoka Lewa, Gresh, etc), likely because I thought Lewa looked cool on that early Phantoka poster I saw around the end of 2007.

Honestly I never got the hate, Cordak Blasters were one of the most fun launchers and I'm glad there was a set that got two. I just wish they had better attachment points.

But aside from that I don't really like Kongu Mahri. A squat body shape just doesn't work for an anything of air IMO and the torso piece he uses was one of the worst, it's just flat as fuck and boring. He at least had the benefit of having a really good mask and being like the only fucking set to actually make proper use of the stupid anecephaly brain stalk that plagued the end of G1.

This all kinds of ends with the "Toa" actually doing pretty well against these things, but then the one in the center absorbs his compatriots, becoming the closest there can be to a reincarnated Terridax, and kills the Toa Adjacent, with only the Matoran being left.

I don't consider that piece stupid, as IIRC it had an axle hole in the back, giving a (one or maybe two) potential uses that the metru brainstalk doesn't have, making it non-redundant in my eyes. Two of them could be connected back to back for an extra long brainstalk, though I'm not sure how good that looks (I haven't tried doing that first-hand). This is just a guess, but I think the metru brainstalk jutting out might look like a weak spot (more vulnerable due to looking unprotected by skull/metal) to some people, possibly providing a trade-off in appearance.

for Mahri Matoro is the only one I have. I do think he's the best allongside Jaller. I like Matoro's more custom build and his slightly awkward, slightly ominous hunch-backed look coupled with the spooky old school diving suit reminiscent mask. the look of the mask is very fitting for its power

I never liked any of the post Rakshi sets. Except for the gold Bionicle and his hover bike. It felt like all the sets after that were way too specialized, and you couldn't just mess around and build things with the pieces.

Joking aside, the custom creations scene for Bionicle was quite big in the mid 2000s-early 2010s.

Greatly takes away from the messianic "legendary hero" aspect of the Toa if there's been dozens of extremely similar Toa teams through history. The Turaga aren't so much witnessing the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy as they are handing the keys to their replacements to close up shop. All part of the gradual demystification of the setting and distancing from the original vision of the pill-delivered heroes battling the formless cancer.

Whether that's a bad thing is down to interpretation, of course. I know we have many enjoyers of the later parts of the setting here. And I agree that a process for Matoran to directly become Turaga would have gelled better, whether analogous to aging or not, but think they could also work in an "as built" sense, similar but independent machines serving their functions.

I think the biggest issue with later parts has more to do with their limited available colors (mostly silver and black) then anything else. At least that is what I sometimes struggle with when building something, it gets really hard to use other more interesting colors when there are almost no parts that actually have the color.

Most of the stories ideas I have mainly involve the Matoran OCs of my friends and I getting into trouble on 01-03 era Mata Nui. Mostly small scale adventure stuff in the same vein of the original flash games with a few jabs at the weirder aspects of the lore. I do have ideas for what my OC would get up to if he became a Toa, but it would cover so much time (I'm working off of a modified version of the original time line where major events are more spaced out) that I'm thinking of formatting it as a journal of his travels across the Matoran Universe.

I never saw that much of a divide between bionicle and the rest, I was into bricks beams and barnacles growing up and lost interest as the run ended. Got a bit into it again just as g2 was being announced and followed it a bit but didn't grab my attention enough and I wasn't even aware of the second wave until last year. Now an adult that has to buy his own toys I find this plastic to be really expensive and hard to source where I live but I did get a big ass technic truck with a motor and pneumatics.

That's just most fanbases with autistic incels. If there's incels with autism in a group, you're bound to see a lot get groomed into thinking they're trans. It's not just Bionicle. Look at the speedrunning community or Magic the Gathering. Hell, look at Spiderman. Trannies are all over that fanbase too trying to latch onto Spider Gwen right now. It's a very common issue with a lot of "nerd culture" subgroups. I remember seeing on Bionicle moccists' story about how they hated themselves and how they had "their eyes opened" by others online that they were a tranny. Miserable men get groomed into thinking their issues can be solve not by trying to become better men, but becoming women instead. Rather sad, honestly. It's why I barely talk to anyone online aside from here. People everywhere are two faced and try fucking with people's heads to spread their lifestyle onto others, and I'm not for that. As far as I'm aware (not very), certain characters have limited communications or links between their minds, with as much rarity and explanation of it's workings as the visions Vakama received.
I'm not sure if they're psychic, the phenomenon might be the result of something outside of the characters rather than their own ability.

I recently checked up on some members of a small-ish discord server I used to be a part of a few years ago. A bunch of them either trooned out or became obnoxious left-wing stereotypes. I don't think there was a single actual female in that group, it was just a bunch of lonely dudes with autistic hobbies like anime and VRchat.

Anyway, don't want to go to far off-topic, but my point is that it's a trend that's not limited to the Bionicle fanbase. Lonely autistic men are just super vulnerable to the lovebombing shit that online communities foster. I think the reason it's so prevalent in Bionicle is because it's a niche community and there isn't really anywhere else to talk about it outside the internet. It's not like you can just talk to your friends at school about the newest wave of sets anymore.

Would've made it more believable that they could survive against the Rahi for so long and have created more interesting situations, as well as further illustrating how strong the Toa are. Bonus, have Takua have no mask/elemental power, highlighting how different he is

It comes a point where the powers are so weak that there's no point. For example, sure a little ignition could be useful in a pinch, but could the same thing not be done with a tool of some kind, like a like something akin to a match, or otherwise? They basically survived with their ingenuity and the tools at their disposal, from regular tools like spears to disks, so they didn't really need any more.

The only value of 'bits of power' I'd think would be the progression of Matoran to Toa, so it's like their powers flourishing. But it isn't like it's a natural progression, given that it usually takes certain specific conditions for a Matoran to become a Toa, so it isn't like they need any inherit power. Would it be fine? For sure, but I don't really think it'd change anything other than like, showings of differences of power like you mentioned.

If there was a more clear progression from Matoran to Toa, as if that was just maturation, it might make sense, basically children with fledgling powers, but otherwise them having a small amount of power doesn't really change anything from how things are or happened in the story.

There were also the unusual Matoran, like those from Voya Nui with non elemental but powers nonetheless, and Av-Matoran with their light powers (if all Matoran were like this but with their elements there probably wouldn't be a need for Toa until there are really overpowered enemies).

I almost like where G2 went with this, where it's the masks that have them the elemental power. Like, any villager could wear the elemental Protector masks and gain those abilities, but it's the trained guardians that are allowed to use them. Likewise, anyone could wear the Toa masks and gain their abilities, but the prophecy stated they were for the Toa, so nobody made use of them until they arrived.
It meant you could play with any mask on anyone which was a nice concept in theory.
The oversimplification and lack of exploration of it all sucked though.

I amote into tabletop stuff nowadays and grew out of LEGO, but Bionicle will always be special to me. Nothing like it before or since.
So i decided to look on eBay and maybe get something. So I randomly looked for Toa Mata because I'm straight OG(family never had enough money for all the Toa let alone all the sets so I mostly experienced thru the website and video games and comics and some novels).
But all six of them with their canisters is like 230$ Jesus Christ. I bought a 3D printer recently to avoid such extortion(death upon Games Workshop, please).
Would it be better to buy from bricklink or something?

How much do the canisters cost? I always loved how it was a way to store them and spare parts, as well as something you could play with. When I was a kid I used to pretend the pods could heal them and all my other Toa would defend one who was taking a healing bath from monsters, and they'd haul it off to here and there and some times they'd roll it down hills while one of them was in it like you did with a tire.

Getting back into Lego pretty hard right now and Bionicle comes with that for me as it's my favorite theme even if I like the brickbuilt stuff. Planning to rebuild all my old sets and fill out some of the collections.

Here's what I have and I'm in the process of rebuilding/building/is built
>Mata: Onua, Lewa, Pohatu
>Nuva: Tahu, Kopaka, Pohatu, Onua
>Metru: All of them, some part replacements will be needed like Vakama's shooter snapped from being in the ol' Lego bin
>Hordika: All of them, no strong evidence to suggest I'm missing parts however a bunch of the black guys parts are tied up in a MOC a hold dear to my heart so I will probably just have to rebuy him.
>Stars: Got a random assortment of Stars pieces from a Technic haul, only one I ever bothered to build out was Tahu who was complete
>Bohrok: The green one, the red one, and the Bohrok-Kal Brown one
>Rakshi: The Blue and White ones, miiiiight have 1 or 2 a friend passed down to me in here as well
>Pirahka: A green one, and the latest Bionicle set I got by far because I fell off the lore when they switched Toa back in the day, but the commercial got my ass
>Micro sets: The water village's elder, a red bohrok val, and im pretty sure all of the little spinner launch not-rakshi mini dudes from metru nui
>Premium sets: Takanuva and his bike, OG Makuta set
>Gen 2: All original version of the toa, the brown like citizen model guy or whatever the fuck the companion sets to the first line in gen 2 were, several of the skeleton enemies, I think 3 of the uniter toa and only 2 of their animals, umarak and ekimu, and umarak the destroyer
>Tahu and Takua anniversary set

What I am thinking of adding:

The Nuva masks had the ability to give the ability to nearby allies as well as yourself. Same thing with the Miru Nuva. Can't exactly levitate better either. The main gimmick of the Nuva masks was the power lending.

I actually like most of the Glatorian canister sets, my favourite is the Vorox though they really nailed the scorpion motif and an all tan set was cool.

Are these designs really supposed to convince me that technic builds can put asses in seats in 2023? I love them because I'm a lego nerd, but kids and the general public aren't gonna give a shit about something that looks like that.

I want technic to be more than sports cars too, but technic needs a whole bunch of new all purpose pieces designed around constraction if technic figures are gonna come back and be good. The only other option is somehow hope that big hyper specific molds come back into style and fat fucking chance at that.

What year is this? System has ball joints and there are mechs and robots and builds that rival bonkles in quality now. The line could absolutely be done justice in system

I'd prefer technic as well, but some 1000ish piece 18+ mech like the Ideas Exo Suit in scale would be able to create Bionicle evocative builds very nicely.

Instead of wishing for something that we all know can't happen under the current paradigm at Lego why not instead accept the occasional tribute set ala Castle, Space, Vikings, Pirate, etc? Lego is never EVER going to run another line full of specialized molds, they're done with them and every facet of the fanbase but Bionicle fans is cheering the decision on because it makes system builds 100 times better to be crafted out of normal bricks.

Little bricks make for good greebling from afar, on a static model, lowering robustness (playability) while rising complexity (age rating) and piece count (price). Detail for system constraction figures comes as prints and few funny shaped bricks, and doodads pasted on arms and back.

Where do you honestly think "Maori Robots" fits into this business scheme? It's as important as the timeless lines but it's as marketable as rock raiders would be today. You can't make an entire line out of retro style castle so Lego puts 1 in creator, a GWP, and a deluxe one out and the designers let the castle fans eat good in a way they can get past the corporate suits. And you know why that model will persist for castle and space fans? Because they actually BUY SHIT. You guys won't meet the designers halfway and create some sales data for them to bring to corporate to talk corporate into more builds/ builds that are even more up your alley.

That GWP Takanuva has functioning gears to make its arms swing. And you can lock them in place too using other pieces if you want to articulate it without the arms swinging. That model has a lot of untapped potential.

I think you could make one or two decent looking ones but beyond that? Most body pieces for technic are just flat paneling. General Technic pieces are very limited in their ability to evoke shapes on a smaller scale compared to specifically molded ones or system.

Bionicle was best under technic. The gear functions, especially on bigger sets, where great. Projectile of the current wave just didn't do it for me.
