In my country the books had this rather unusual cover art style that was very exaggerated, almost to the point of being ugly on purpose. Very fairy tale/weird fantasy-esque stuff. Old mtg art had something similar as well.
So to me, reading the first book back in '01 as an excitable 8 year old, this kinda fits. Also Hermione wasn't supposed to be pretty in the books.
