the quality isnt that far off from modern lego. bluebrixx specials bricks actually crack less easily than lego and injection marks on 1x1 pieces are less noticeable.

Yeah, that sucks, but you still can order from gobricks using resellers on sites like aliexpress, the process is a little more complicated since you need to fill in a form with the parts and it is a little more expensive, for me it works fine since I try to use original lego for most of my builds and only use non lego bricks for rare/expensive parts or parts in colors not available in lego

They DO all love the same police car and fire truck though, that's why those have been the most consistent products in lego's lineups. City police and fire sets sell better than anything except licensed themes because kids like acting out cops and robbers and that sort of thing. 95% of male children will be much more interested in a police station playset than a hair salon or organic grocery store or whatever the hell else Friends does.

is the bottom one meant to look better? prefer the top honestly, has a nice style to it. covered sky bridge is a neat touch and the pizza stall is kino
building on the left in the friends set is nice but the one on the right is pretty awful and the bridge between the two doesn't seem to actually go anywhere. that ugly floating staircase blocking the path through the middle isn't nearly as interesting as a road through the middle either

Age doesn't instantly translate to value. Chima turned 10 this year and everything from it is dirt cheap online.
I really don't get why the specific example I sent is so inflated, it doesn't come with any exclusive figures or a bloat of rare parts. And I doubt Ninjago has a whole lot lot of fans that are above the age of 7

Bit disappointed with Eldorado. Of course I expected all the women, but there are some weird design choices like the upper door, the ridiculous rear turret on the crane, and the dock seems like an afterthought. Also, not a fan of the ramp - LG is now clearly padding out their part count with shit like that. Sloop looks nice, but much like the fort, I feel like I could easily make that myself. As much as GAYFOLS malign large panel pieces, they're perfect for builds like these and essential for keeping prices under control, and its a shame the designers didn't utilize them.

I only briefly was buying sets when Airjitsu tower came out. I have that, Destiny's Bounty final flight, Morro Dragon, a heavily modified mech titan battle set, the Battle for Ninjago City set, and a couple of those snake themed vehicles that I recently combined into a single Mechwarrior style mech.

Lego city has always trended a bit futuristic now and then. The architecture hasn't usually been especially grounded, it's meant to be more symbolic than representative. This isn't what a police station really looks like, but it gives off a definite *feel* of a police station, in some sleek near-future style.
I think that City downtown gives off the *feel* of a downtown well - a food stall, a skybridge, a small park, and a couple tall buildings, with one being somewhat futuristic and the other being (partly) a bit more classic. It's not a downtown in our world but it could be a downtown in some world, maybe some utopian mid-sized city in the 2040s.
The friends set on the other hand doesn't give nearly as much of a sense of place, it doesn't feel like much of anything - it's two discoherent buildings sort-of connected by a bridge to nowhere with an odd staircase jutting into a plaza. The shop is alright and would make a nice set on its own, the apartment is god-awful and fails at not just looking like an apartment, but looking like a decent building at all. That massive, steep 45 degree slope in the roof just looks bizarre. The benches pressed directly against the fountain and blocking the entire plaza do as well. If you killed the terrible apartment and the bridge and turned the set into just the shop with a small plaza and that fountain, it'd be leagues better.

I came back a few weeks later and asked about them and she played dumb and then I figured out she had a yard sale a few weeks prior and finally got it out of her. Probably not, I will admit what kids are into has shifted. Although I feel a big issue with newer IPs is the need to have named characters and preset villains and heroes. When it's left more ambiguous like with Creator or City it seems to not hurt sales regardless what the set's theming is. Creator's done some whacky one-offs like the android jet or the sentai robot set for instance. That, and conflict-in-a-box just makes some sets more expensive than they otherwise need to be, making newcomers have more of a hurdle to leap over if they want to get invested in a new theme. I'm just rambling at this point, sorry. Whatever the case, it won't hurt to make some mocs. Thanks for the inspiration, m8.

I got the 3 new big sets and the Market from DR. The temple's probably my favorite since it'd be pretty unfair if I said the Market was. Bounty's pretty good too, dragon's fine. Sora and Wyldfire are probably my favorite figures of the wave. Arin's getup ain't too bad.

To me personally Nexo Knights has two big problems. One, the color schemes on almost every single set is pure visual vomit. Too loud and gaudy.
And two, they never leaned in on the sci-fi element as hard as they should have. To me, sci-fi is about things that are alien, a sense of adventure and exploration, etc. Nexo Knights failed at being sci-fi to me personally. Instead it's just your typical medieval builds with a "mechanical" coat of paint, and I found it really gimmicky rather than interesting. Just my two cents.
I do like Jestro's Volcano Lair though.

for me it was shit because as a castle scifi hybrid it didn't feel castle or sci fi enough, i know there were castle elements and shit like castles and mechanical horses etc etc but it just didnt work in my opinion, same for the sci fi elements, also like the other anon said the colours are awful, those colours work on some things but everything for the good guys was exactly the same colours, the bad guys were hit and miss some like the lava monsters were pretty cool and i liked the cyber vampires but others just looked shit, and we never got the cool orcs from the concept art
also i just dont give a shit about vehicles i much prefer bases and buildings, in nexo even the buildings where vehicles
i wish id picked up some sets but the vast majority of nexo im happy to have completely ignored
i also greatly dislike the argument that classic castle won't come back because nexo sold poorly, its a shitty excuse when classic and nexo are so different that interest in one shouldn't be used to assume interest in the other
its like assuming no one will buy cake because you have been unsuccessfully trying to sell a cake made with crickets

Setting aside that atrocious price point, I really dislike that smooth roof design that lacks any visual implications of tiling. Also, I understand Lego wants to use the new fern leaf pieces for new sets, but the tree they made out of it looks more like an evergreen tree than a tree one would find in East Asia.

This honestly should have been a $60 set by reducing the size, cutting down on the trees/vegetation, and going with a more minimalistic zen rock garden approach.

I agree on the evergreens, but other than that I think it's fine. I dislike the bonsai tree pot from collection botanique being used as a base. That's alot of the part bloat. They could have used plates for a larger open area and done your rock garden idea with the extra space.

I've been looking at some older sets from like the mid 2000s such as Exo-Force, Power Miners, etc and I realized something. A TON of those sets had play functions with gears and they were really clever. Of course gear functions still exist, but you don't see it as much and it's something I think is lacking these days.

Besides, I don't recall anyone getting upset over the female explorer in Adventurers, despite there having historically been more woman pirates than woman 1920s explorers. I watch this families kids and they're really into Lego (and vidya) so I get a bunch of unique insights into how kids are engaging with that kind of stuff today.

One thing that I think is amusing is that the lego bin and all of the sets people buy kids still inevitably go through the cycle of losing small parts and decaying until the kid doesn't wanna look at it in a half complete state anymore and tears it down for bin parts.

From a certain standpoint it can be argued that the original design and branding is basically just to get the box into the childs hands and the only thing that matters after that point is that the instructions are easy enough to be finished once so the parents don't feel like they wasted their money and then from their the only thing that matters is how well the individual pieces contribute to children building their own shit.

Nexo knights imo fell because it had the
SHITTY app tax, so when sales weren't the best, they were overall worse off because of the moneysink the shitty game was. I disagree about the "apartment" building being bad, I agree that it looks nothing like an apartment building though. It does give me a strong art gallery feel though and would be better suited as such.
