Did anyone else here love these things as a kid? I have a decent amount of them, as well as a couple books about their weird lore. I was cleaning through my old things when it all came back to me, but unfortunately all of my searches online were dominated by the god awful looking movie from 2019.

Cool! I always really liked Wage. My cousin also liked Uglydolls as a kid. My uncle would go to comic book conventions and sometimes would bring him as well. I remember he had a special colored Target, which I believe was some sort of special exclusive convention version. I was a bit envious.

I have like $1,000+ of them from when i was younger, loved them. Last thing I knew of with the brand was the film, which looked like garbage. Not sure where the line is today but I hope it's doing okay, I think it was a husband and wife team that started it out of their house initially.

Yes, David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. They weren't initially allowed to see each other, so they communicated with letters. David drew a doodle of proto-Wage on one of his letters, and Sun-Min turned it into a plush doll for him as a gift. Friends loved them so they made more and it caught on like most fads. Hasbro's buy out of the license and delays in getting the movie out pretty much killed the franchise. I sold them like crazy in my store back in the day, including the rare 6 foot ones.

I'd see one of these things appear in the background of a movie I was watching and I would think to myself "that's neat, I wouldn't mind one of those" but I never looked into it more.
I'm pretty sure one is in Zathura, one with bat wings.

what drugs have the execs over there been on for the last decade? atleast with rom and the like they had the goal in mind to get a shared universe off the ground, but some of their other purchases from the last decade have just left me scratching my head. Stretch Armstrong? Peppa Pig? even D&D seems like a confused acquisition after they fumbled both Gi Joe and Transformers twice over. The only sensible acquisition they've made thus far has to be Power Rangers and thats because there's just as much money in PR merch sales as Transformers.

speaking of the film, was there any way that production wouldnt have sucked? whenever I saw the ugly dolls I assumed they were like the hot topic equivalent of care bears or the smurfs. That invader zim brand of harsh cuteness and random humor. The trolls approach they took with the film just came off as really lazy. And given how lazy the trolls film already was that's saying something.

Funny, I think I also have a Target variant (though I don’t think it’s anything too special). IIRC he’s a “ninja Target” so he’s basically just all-black except for his distinctive red eye. He’s also a keychain, so I can take him with me on the go. I usually travel with one of them clipped on cuz they’re good for a laugh.
Yeah Uglydolls are great imo.

From what I remember, the books had a quite imaginative world. I think it might've worked well as a show animated in a style like the original Uglydoll illustrations that was faithful to that weird world they created.
