My list of the top 10 worst G1 sets

I actually like a lot of things about Pridak, the weapons, the head and the feet, the way he's shaped like a shark in "swimming mode". The execution is lacking in various ways though. The torso and the limbs feel too barebones. Using pre-bent Nuva limbs as lower arms was a weird choice. The fin on his back is connected in a weird way and sticks out awkwardly. Overall looks unfinished and kinda like some MOC build.
>9: Mutran and Vican
This one feels like a lazy afterthought to the Phantoka wave. Not terrible but not good either. His simple humanoid Makuta build with wings on the back kinda worked with Antroz, but with Mutran it doesn't feel like there was a lot of thought put into it. I also dislike the weapons.
>8: Mistika Gali
I guess simply reusing the Inika build with some variations and new parts still worked with the Mahri, but here it was getting kinda old. The only Toa set I liked from the Mistika wave was Onua, but I still don't think he looks like Onua at all, possibly was designed to be a new version of Nuparu initially. I liked Gali's unique shoulder pads, the overall silhouette and the color scheme, but they weren't enough to save this set. Most people hated the mask, not my favourite one either, but I was okay with it. No proper weapons whatsoever.
>7: Mistika Tahu
Bland. Boring build, no interesting new pieces. The weapons suck. The mask is far from great, but it's an okay one, I guess. Doesn't look like Tahu at all.
>6: Glatorian Skrall
This one demonstrates the best way why I dislike most 2009 sets. The designers tried to give him a more unique and weird silhouette and a more expressive color scheme, but somehow it just didn't work. Something makes him look extremely bland and flat compared to canister sets from earlier years. Also the weapon looks like a MOC of some twelve years old kid.

The rubber band on my nui jaga broke, is there somewhere I can get a replacement? I'm a complete purist so even using a non lego rubber band feels weird but I reckon I could let a rubber band slide and just use one thats not lego. All the breaking and splitting of my socket joints is so painful too. fuck decay. God my obsessive perfectionism cripples hobbies for me.

All Visorak sets were built around two overly specialized pieces, but at least they looked cool. This is not the case with Oohnorak. As a kid I liked all other Visorak besides this one. It looks like they ran out of design ideas, the thin and long shapes with straight and sharp lines make it look very unappealing. Still an okay set for spare parts and recolors, I guess.

I like the design of the torso, but everything else sucks about, especially the legs. Looks like a polybag promo set. Though an okay set for spare parts.

Only positive things about them are the ball sockets and Rahkshi heads in Metru colors.
>2: Phantoka Kopaka
The torso, the limbs, the color scheme and everything is as boring as possible. Only has those flat wings on his back, and the weapon is just the gun of that wave with a small blade put on it. The mask is ugly too.
>and then finally the worst of the worst: Stars Skrall
Open balls and ball joints. The way those blades are attached to his arms looks weird. That helmet looks awkward on it. That light grey technic piece messes up the colors. Overall looks really bad.

Ah okay thank you. I've not used bricklink before and wasn't sure they'd have rubber bands for sale there. I'll have to check it out. Sometimes it bothers me that all the pieces in a figure aren't the exact ones that came out of the box, that although their identical they are from different years and waves. It's definitely an obsessive behaviour that's at odds with what bioncle is by its nature of a construction toy of mixing and matching parts. Don't get me wrong as a kid mocs were all I really cared about doing with bionicle, now it's all about preservation.

Here's a fun tip to drive you extra bonkers: 1999-2007 ball joints can be distinguished by whether they have pip-shaped depressions on the side based on when they came out. I forget at this exact moment if it's the newer ones or older ones that have them, but you'll figure it out.

Except this doesn't matter at all because pretty much every set had a mixture of both mold variations.

It's the injection spot differences on liftarms that are the real headache. They subtley changed the way liftarms are manufactured at least twice over the course of Bionicle's run.

The lines between when Lego transitioned some of these parts is super fucking blurry, too. But the 1x3 thin liftarm for example, they switched over sometime in 2005. I have a Keetongu with the old style, a Keetongu with the new style, and a Sidorak with BOTH styles fresh out of the box.

The only Phantoka sets that were good were maybe Pohatu and Lewa and even then I kept thinking Lewa was actually Lesovikk with that reused Faxon mold. Lewa's vehicle Miru > Faxon!Miru.
The Av-Matoran sets are only good for the masks, jetpacks and weapon pieces. Almost all of the pre-molded limb sockets broke off within a year after I got them in 2008, and I wasn't roughplaying with them either. Only the ones from 2009-10 are sorta intact and that's from never using them in the 13 years I've had em.

Here's the part that burns my ass about the Rahaga, though. That very year, they introduce a ball piece on a technic arm by means of which a transparent orange (or regular orange if we're feeling cheap) socket piece can be attached at the same exact position with but a single 2-pin, allowing for full neck articulation in the same style as a rahkshi head and in fact using one less piece. What did they actually go with instead? A fucking mess of half-thickness orange technic arms that let the head swivel side to side, don't fill out the eyeholes from a front view, and best of all are fucking impossible to actually remove from inside the rahkshi head piece without either dangerously stressing the softer plastic of the head's pin or scratching the fucking thing up trying to lever them out with something metal.
I like the Rahaga aside from that though. Rahkshi Turaga. Mini Rahkshi with a lil half-staff. Cute!

If you'd said Av-Matoran I would've said yes because 2008 joints were extra awful even in comparison to later reissues of the same piece. But basically no, all angleshit joints are inherently fucked next to classic roundies and/or CCBS. Probably why I never gave Hero Factory a chance tbdesu, it's a bad place to start out from.

I have some old bionicle sets I'm thinking of selling on a local buy/sell site and I'm wondering about something. Do people generally like looking at big lots or do they prefer going for specific sets individually?

In terms of what I have I'd always grab the white sets when I was kid. Have a few white toa, bohrok and some other white canister sets, all complete to my knowledge. Would a potential buyer actually want a bunch of white colored sets at once or should I expect to do more work and take individual offers separately? There's also a few masks that don't look like they're part of the sets, should I just add them as freebies?

The hockey ones had some nice pieces, like the recolored Bionicle weapons/armor pieces. The feet later got reused in some Bionicle titans. The smooth masks can be used as armor in MOCs.
The Ben 10 sets were okay, I guess.
Hero Factory had a lot of cool and fun sets, a shame it went downhill after Breakout, though I still liked some of the sets from 2013-2014. Better than most of the stuff we got in G2 imo.

In this case it's a bit retarded to call mousecuck in my opinion. Everyone I knew who got some Star Wars ultrabuilds only got them for the builds and the pieces. They didn't care about the characters themselves and didn't watch the movies.
At this point I think of constraction and Bionicle as separate things. I mostly only care about building MOCs, and not much about Bionicle, sometimes I reread/rewatch some story material but that's it. Would be really stupid to limit these threads to Greg's fanfiction-tier writing and 14+ years old sets from some cancelled Lego theme. Like, should we start a separate thread for constraction?

If they are a good part pack or not may depend on what you are looking for. I liked Kualus because I needed white pieces and those orange liftarms. The Voyatoran meanwhile have heads and masks, but not as many of those metrutoran limbs as I'd like (these last 3 kind of pieces would be what I'd need to make some Matoran), and the other pieces, which could also be useful, vary wildly among them. Only Dalu has the bohrok limbs that I want.
Kazi is cue too, and has the pair of bohrok eyes in the colour I'm looking for, but the lack of head hurts.

They had a cohesive lore and atmosphere for the first three years, the mistake was changing it for the sake of the movie in late 2001 and nerfing the lore of 2002.
By that point what they did in 2004 was a good move, they couldn't have avoided getting inside the GSR if they wanted to extend the theme for more years. I liked the sets and the atmosphere too. The problem is that they changed plans and aesthetics multiple times afterwards too, that combined with Bob Thompson's quitting and Greg's shitty writing the story became a clusterfuck.

Metru Nui was great aesthetically, very different but just as good as Mata Nui with the fleshed out districts, othewordly architecture and somewhat dystopian feel

the problem was that all the later settings felt much less interesting and there was just less to them. we didn't get to see different villages or districts on Voya Nui, Mahri Nui or Karda Nui, they didn't really feel like parts of a lived-in world with Matoran going about their business and all that. maybe Mahri Nui was the closest to that because at least it had the "collecting air bubbles" job, but other than that it was just a generic undersea town

I do wish they would have stayed with the tribal theme to some degree, but 2004 was also a great year. it's 2005 that really fucked things up with the bad sets and completely unnecessary premise. if the events of 2005 never happened, nothing would really change for the overall story and "metru nui, but it's all covered in ugly cobwebs" wasn't exactly a compelling setting either

Hey, I mean, this is the most current Brickshelf moc under the Bionicle tab. Overuse of System, rife with illegal connections, way too smooth and boring. This doesn't look like Bionicle to me. I think mask packs nowadays would be made to be more recognizable as collectibles. Like a spot on the ads showing characters swap into other masks, or with clear text on the packaging, not just a poster. If you weren't reading all the media that's just a strange box of leftovers or misprints since why would they make their faces in other colors.
Collectables have become way more mainstream though, blindbags and vinyl slop are the first things on display at toy stores. If it were up to me I'd put a weapon in the bag to sweeten the deal, masks don't seem like enough of an accessory to uneducated philistines.

There’s this really weird thing Bionicle does where supposed upgrades come across as really underwhelming and at worst downgrades. The same goes for the ACTUAL downgrades.

It's soul because it reminds me a of a simpler time in MOC where torso pieces could be torsos and people used foot pieces to be feet.

Lots of MOCs today verge on being art installations or engineering projects. Even the most basic stuff usually involves custom build torsos, feet, and hands.

They don't have mask powers and their elemental powers are drastically less versatile. They might be more powerful, as in they're physically stronger and their elemental attacks are more aggressive, but when they can do so much less than an average Toa, it doesn't seem like an upgrade at all.

I made some coomer MOCs a few years back, I think I even posted some of them here. I reverse engineered Dawn's techniques and tried to make my own builds. It was when I was still taking antipsychotic meds, a few months prior to when I decided to quit them. Wasted like three years of my life zombified by them.
Ironically, it somehow improved my MOCing skills later.

I would have made them less cool and bulked them up slowly. They were born buff and the only way they could go after that was the shit crystal/fluffy shells and buccal fat removal. A smaller, maybe cheaper introduction of the theme would allow more room for hype, and would look better on the executives table if it sells less.
Also I think the design team was not in it for the long run.

In terms of other vehicle sets? The 08 battle vehicles are all good in their own way. Rockoh, Jetrax, and Axalara, can't go wrong with any of them.
Boxor is technically a vehicle as well, and a great one at that

Boxor is on the smaller side and is visually abstract compared to Ussanui, but it's got a very satisfying play feature. Thornatus and Skopio from the Glatorian line are pretty visually impressive. And like the other anon said, the larger 2008 ones are all great.

The titan set was him hopped off on Karda Nui light magic, so really it's just him shrinking once he was out of there.
Both sets have unbelievably ugly legs/feet, so at least it's consistent there.

Both of these are wrong.
The Titan set got its colors due to Takanuva taking a shadow leech on Metru Nui (forget how it got there).
Size was due to a Makuta virus given to him on his interdimensional journeys (I think in the Toa Empire, but can't remember).
Bara Magna colors were supposedly "desert camouflage." He actually gets de-shadowed in the Karda Nui arc, and there are comic panels of his Titan self with gold-white armor.
