I don't know, I never got the kingdom version because the truck is bad and the fat G1 prime didn't feel right. At least the siege version was different enough from the usual white prime that it feels like an alternate universe character

I guess I would he getting the new SS though I am really wonder just how long can hasbro keep rehashing old character like this when with each new release they are getting a near perfect version of the character

Takara's molds from 20 years ago are stuck in China provided they weren't destroyed. The cost of manual labor there has risen tremendously since, so it's not profitable to reuse the same molds with the same Chinese factories unless they release them as some sort of premium reissue. They did do so with CarRobots Fire Convoy and it was a complete disaster.

The Kingdom's torso looks way better, proportions are wack on the new one and also the head kooks too small. Will buy it nonetheless, but it will coexist with my Kingdom one as I don't see it as an improvement in every regard.

Also prople should stop calling the white Optimus a gimmick that compromises the toy. The problems on the Kingdom one are just a result of it being a retool of a different design. In Ultra Magnus case the gimmick is having it transform WITHOUT a white Optimus, and that's what actually compromises the Studio Series one proportions, as Ultra Magnus transformation is only straightforward when it's done like the G1 toy.

This. The animation model designers acted like they never even saw the original toy, which led to all sorts of engineering problems and misguided fan rejection of armor Magnus.

All that shows is that the idea of Prime Wearing Armor only works on a G1 brick you aren't meant to look at from any angle but the front. Once you want a posable toy it becomes a liability instead of a feature.

It looks better regardless of color. Having a base robot is certainly fun, but there are always going to be compromises to the larger mode because of it. It's a matter of do you prefer a better looking primary mode, or do you want the extra play value.

Depends. The OG toy had a white prime, the show did not. I also thought the base figure was very ugly. I'm not against the feature, but Hasbro could have done better imo.

I was talking about toy design. Magnus transformation is only straightforward if you follow the original design (Powered Convoy) as the cartoon model is based on that. When they need to design a Magnus that removes the need of the inner robot they have to come up with more complex transformations because the thing was never designed to work that way in the first place.
That's why when talking about toys, having a Magnus that isn't power armor is more of a gimmick than the opposite.

Not even close to being the same thing. Starscream fists were just shortcomings of the era it was designed and can be easily reworked nowadays, but Powered Convoy transformation is what makes the cartoon Ultra Magnus look as it does, whole cab disappearing into thin air included. Again, the transformation is only straightforward if it follows the original toy design, and that's the reason why the SS Magnus has so many panels in the upper body, a cab that needs to turn inside out to make it disappear, small head and extremely broad shoulders. In Magnus case, removing the armor is the reason things get overcomplicated. In other words, changing the whole way it transforms to represent the lack of white Prime from the show is the gimmick.

In a way I see what you're getting at, but when talking about Siege/Kingdom Magnus, it's not really like the original either. The original was more or less a flat power suit and the white figure plugged into the back for piloting. The newer figure had to break into various parts and wrap around the base figure, though that could arguably be because it was an Optimus figure first. Then there's Combiner Wars, which didn't include the white Prime, but 3rd party stepped in and made a cab that was like Powermaster Prime, forming a cube to go into the suit. Everything else that I can think of (that's official) has been all-in-one.
