How does bubbles affect something that moves with capillary forces?

Use good point and bubbles from shaking won't ever be a problem is the takeaway here.

Not to mention a large chunk of airbrushers (myself included) just mix everything in the cup by backflushing, which produces bubbles, which go away in half a second. Its literally a non issue and I have no idea what the fuck that guy is trying to prove by saying its an issue

Did a very quick bit of detailing on an otherwise out-the-box build of Furai Model Arcee; I wanted to keep her mostly plastic as she's a lot of fun to pose but I thought she needed a bit of attention. Just picked out a few bits with Vallejo Liquid Metal White Gold and shaded the panel lines with a very, very, very gentle application of purple oil paint. Gonna wait for it to dry more before I clean up any excess/out-the-lines bits.

Newtype has quickly went from my favorite place to order to near the bottom. Taking 3-5 days just to get a tracking number, then UPS was taking 5-7 days to deliver it. Now they are apparently using USPS? Maybe I'll get the order by October.

There was a potential UPS strike that got negotiated to not happen. Some e shops have switched in anticipation of that, but it was settled so give it some time and it should go back to normal, hopefully.

Our first contender is the Mobile Fighter representing Neo America piloted by Brickston Howser, the Gundam Roadhouse! This Gundam is a melee bruiser focused on close-quarters combat. A specialty of Howser who earned his reputation as a fighter working as a bouncer in the most violent biker bar in all of America.

Gundam Roadhouse's main armaments are its pair of large fighting chains that hang from its hips. These chains can be used to bludgeon, entangle, trip, or disarm foes as well as being able to wrap them around Roadhouse fists to make its strikes more punishing. In addition Roadhouse has beam emitters on its shoulders, knees, forearms, and chest that can emit beams of various kinds and be used to perform beam-empowered brawling attacks such as lariats, shoulder tackles, and knee strikes. For short-range or drive-by combat Roadhouse also has a beam shotgun. Lastly the skull on Roadhouse chest hides its skull cannon, a large emitter that can fire heavy beams that require some recharge time between shots. Not often used in normal Gundam Fight combat; but primarily as a means of travel, the Roadhouse also has its Road Roller a vehicle the Mobile Suit can ride styled like a scaled-up vintage American Chopper Motorcycle. It is lightly armored and capable of high landspeed.

The Gundam Roadhouse's finisher is the deadly Roadhouse Roundhouse - a powerful roundhouse kick that diverts a majority of the Mobile Suit's power to thrusters to increase the velocity of its attack. Sometimes delivered while leaping off of the Road Roller.

Up next is Neo Czechoslovakia's entry to the 13th Gundam Fight, the Gundam Tabor!

The Gundam Tabor is built around the principles and traditions of the Czech peoples, hearkening back to some of the greatest events of their history. Mounting heavy armour and boasting a set of magnetic anchors that allow it to set itself against nearly any charge, the Tabor is built to take the heaviest of hits and keep fighting through.

In keeping with the philosophy of the design, the Tabor mounts a series of powerful guns across its chassis. Each shoulder carries a pair of one-shot bombards, missile weapons that fire a massive pod at the target. These are preloaded but range from EM pods, to beam scatter loads, to devastating HE charges. The real firepower is mounted in the chest though, a pair of massive Beam-Haufbitze are concealed beneath the massive armoured doors. A single hit at short range is enough to reduce almost any mobile suit to a wreck, but the weapons lose power at longer ranges and are relatively clumsy in comparison to a handheld weapon, and although the bay is armoured it is significantly less so than the rest of the hull, meaning the Tabor is, ironically, vulnerable when using its heaviest guns.

Finally, the Tabor carries its Beam-Flail. Based on the iconic Hussite weapon, this heavy two handed weapon is surprisingly capable, and its free swinging head allows it to pass over an opponents defence and land brutal blows on the foe. The Tabors pilot, Andela, is trained in HEMA and specialises in the peasant flail. She sees the Gundam Fight as a holy mission, sent to her by god. She believes it is her righteous mission to win and see Neo Czechoslovakia ascend.

After the events of the previous year, Neo Belarus decided to distance itself from their former ally and benefactor, Neo Russia, and created a mobile suit of their own to enter the 14th Fight: the Gopnik Gundam. Due to Neo Belarus' poor economic standing, certain cuts had to be made in production such as a lack of Gundarium alloys. As such, Neo Belarus salvaged a destroyed Death Army suit to utilize for the head unit.
Another area economically impacted is the weaponry, with the Gopnik Gundam relying only on a pair of knives and close quarter combat skills, and preferring to sneak attack their opponent instead of facing them head on. An unexpected perk of using a captured Death suit was salvaged DG cells, which are stored in a bottle to be used and activated, allowing a temporary increase in speed, power, and stealthiness

Lastly we have Neo India's entry into the 14th Gundam Fight, the Untouchable (Dalit) Gundam. Independently built to be as light as possible, the Untouchable Gundam carries very little armor. An oversized pair of jet engines grant the suit exceptional speed. If necessary, the armor and jetpack can be ejected to save weight. Armament includes a chain-staff, beam saber and head vulcans. The main weapon is a rotary saw with built in scattering beam cannons. The usual method of attack was to blind the enemy at range and quickly attack the head, while avoiding the enemy's counter attacks. The Untouchable Gundam would rely on its extreme light weight to strike at high speed as any enemy attack would be catastrophic.

it's not entirely accurate as the kit isn't either because trumpeter, but from what I've seen mine is the most accurate depiction of the 2A4NO leo, at least in 1:72 scale.
I'm done with weathered builds and tanks for a while, leopards are literally the most boring shit ever.

Local shop was owned by a boomer, he died in November from lung cancer. RIP him. He knew Gundams and the such brought in all his revenue. Half his store was model trains, planes and ships, which had layers of dust. The only empty shelves he ever had were gunpla/plamo.

I have two of the dspiae glass files, they work really well but it takes much more time than using a knife
I mainly use them for nubs that I don't want to risk a stress mark, semitransparent plastic (it's so brittle even cutting far away can still make stress marks) and to make stress marks less noticeable when I fuck up with the knife/nippers

This looks so fiddly. I am not so careful with it, I usually just stick it down on one side with a piece of ordinary masking tape to keep it roughly in place. You don't need some special thin tape, just let the masking tape run over the edge. This doesn't need to be pretty. I also reuse the same piece of tape until it's not sticky anymore or I'm done decaling.

I've been working on this idea for a custom for a while now. I've got all my materials together and am starting the initial build, but before I start painting I'd like to be sure I'm going in a good direction. I've photoshopped my idea to try an plan out my color layouts. What do you think of the positioning of these colors?

My idea is taking the HG Command Quan[T] and repainting it into an homage to Megatron. Since it's got a big arm mounted weapon I thought this model would be a good fit. The only problem is that it's specifically modeled to be attached to the left arm, not the right arm, so I'm remaking the connector for the arm weapon in SolidWorks to 3d print. The paint i've bought is Vallejo Metal Color Aluminum for the blue-grey parts (which will also include the sword, blaster, and knives,) and Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal Grey or Exhaust Manifold for the dark grey parts. The inner frame will either be the dark grey color, or Model Color Oily Steel.

I'm not sure about the colors of the legs, though. One quality of Megatron I think is necessary to capture is the red inner shins, but since the Command Quan[T] doesn't have color separation on the legs that way, I figured I could paint the whole interior leg red, with it showing through the outer armor.

I'm considering snipping the v-fin off, but if you think it looks weird without it I'll leave it. I don't know what mobile suit that is at the bottom right corner, but I might use that head instead if I can find a HG kit of it. I'm also planning to snip out the sprue of the clear "jewel" parts on the joints and recast them in clear red

I bought two of the kit, one to build normally and one to customize, so right now I'm building the first one to see how everything goes together. Do you have any ideas on what else I could do, or what I should do going into the project? Do you have any suggestions on color placement or paints?

Yeah I'm primarily focusing on the G1 toy colors more so than the cartoon colors, but I'm willing to make changes to make the final model look better. Looks like the Vigna Ghina doesn't have a High Grade though, which is a shame.

I'm also working on an Optimus from the Heavyarms, but I'm struggling with the color layout more on this one, since so much of Optimus's color scheme is big blocks of a solid color.

There's nothing preventing you from making a construction or emergency use mecha for the /m/SV theme, or you could make a construction worker mech that combines with a power-loader like equipment for heavy duty work and use that for the support vehicle theme. Hell you could stretch the super hero theme and make a firefighter themed superhero mech if you really wanted to. The theme is just the jumping off point, what you make for it is up to your imagination

Well, real life lessened its grip on my balls just long enough to finally get this piece of shit finished. This was a broken Gouf that I repurposed, and I tried handpainting the whole thing instead of using rattlecans like I normally do. The light blue parts turned out absolutely perfect, but I don't have a clue what happened with the navy blue parts. The layers went on smooth, they dried beautifully, but after I topcoated it dried with these weird silvery streaks and splotches. It probably has something to do with the metal medium I added to the paint? I don't know. I was going to strip it and try again but this goddamn thing has been sitting on my workbench for almost a year and I just couldn't be bothered.

Not really. Clipping parts out is gonna scar that smooth polished surface a little unless it's undergated, nothing you can really do about it. If you feel really bad about it you could re-glosscoat after cutting out the parts. Or try out that weird clear gloss marker Bandai made, it might work for little touchups.

It will take a long time for each gate, but if you leave a little bit of the nub and then sand it off and use a big range or sandpaper grits that goes up to a high polish finish, you should be able to get a decent looking finish.
The Guren has no undergating, but looking at some OOB reviews there aren't that too many nub marks, so I think they did a decent job at hiding most of the nubs underneath other parts

I've been buying up kits as part of a plan for a custom for a while now, and I think I'm ready to go all-in on it. I'm trying to base a kit on DarkKnightmon, and so far I've got a few of his main components.

For the torso and shoulders, I'm using the Barbatos Lupus's torso, since it looks like a mouth, and can be painted solid to look like a skull. I once saw a custom that did something similar to create an oni/samurai kit. The Seltsam Arms give me the axe blade and lance, and the skull-like head of the Schwarzette seems like it'd make a good head. I haven't picked up the kit yet though so I'm wondering if I could easily replace that ring part on the head with horns. And I have a spare Shenlong Gundam I picked up for his dragon arm, so I might be able to use that kit's biceps and forearms for this build, since they're pretty plain.

The legs and cape have me stumped right now though. Originally I was going to give him the Kimaris Trooper's legs to fit with his ability to split into Deadly Axemon and Skull Knightmon, but the Trooper is very expensive right now and I would have had to scratchbuild a pointed toe anyway.

Anyone have any ideas to help me plan this out?

Is it worth getting dedicated gunpla paints if I already have a bunch of acrylics laying around from doing warhammer? I'm not gonna be doing anything fancy, just brush painting on the stuff that would be handled by color-correcting stickers. I'm also interested in dedicated stuff because it'll probably color match the plastics better since it's made for them, the warhammer paints I have are not quite perfect bright blues and reds and yellows.

Also, do I need to bother with priming if I'm gonna topcoat it at the end anyways?

Priming isn't really needed (or viable, for that matter) if all you're doing is details.
You don't need special paints if you've already got Warhammer stuff, basically every Bandai kit just includes mixing recipes in the manual for every color used, so outside of a few very specific cases you won't get perfectly matched paints right out of the bottle anyway.

I miss when Citadel used to sell a brush-on primer. I think they discontinued it for some reason, but I used to get so much use out of that stuff when I just wanted to prime a small bit without masking.

Had my first real fuck up while building a kit yesterday. Started with a piece that shifted while I was locking in a headpiece. Couldn't separate the headpiece once it was locked in. Then after that a plug piece broke off in the plug. My confidence took a hit.

Dunno, don't own it. I used the Wave one for a while, it worked fine but was too large for my toolkit. I now use the Hexa Gear one, it's nice and small and works great. Plus it kinda feels like you're prying parts with a miniature crowbar, which is fun.

Or a pallete knife? Every artist should have a pallete knife, not just for doing pallete knife shit, but also just paint mixing and taking paint out of containers. Pallete knives are indispensable.

I own a bunch of plastic spudgers of various designs, none work as well as the metal hobby ones simply because of the material. The metal has a thinner edge, and it is obviously very strong (plastic spudgers are prone to edges getting blunted or dulled). Same reason I would not use a pallette knife, those tend to be very thin and bendy, not ideal for prying.

If you can find a super thin and hard metal spudger for cheaper, sure, go use that. But the Hexa Gear one is less than $10, it's tiny for fitting into toolkits, the blade is thin and small (about the size of a pinky fingernail) for getting into tight spots, and IIRC it can perform other functions like pushing out pieces or providing support for polycaps so they don't crush. It was a no-brainer for me for a tool that I use constantly.

Most spungers i've used are supposed to take apart glass and metal held in with tabs and glue. Shit's tougher than any model and can work on tougher glued together+tabs toys.
Models are so weak i use my pallete knives for almost everything, since they're right on my bench. I've owned mine since the 90s, so maybe they'er just more quality than modern shit.

I can't imagine any model being so tough you'd need something of crowbar strength, which you should have an xacto knife with a chisel edge if you do. skip a spunger altogether.
This is what I've done for 25th+ GI Joes where the torso is fused with sonic welding, because you need to actually cut a small wedge to pry it open.

I bought a couple Mr. Color paints today expecting to brush paint them and it's a fucking nightmare, clogs the brush up instantly and leaves tons of skin and brush strokes behind even if I do it quickly. Will leveling thinner and/or retarder help, or should I just get different paints if I don't have an airbrush? I only went with these because it's what my local store had and also the gundam line matches the plastic colors really well.

Always thin your paints, especially lacquers and acrylics with their quick drying time.
Enamels are the only ones you can sometimes get away with painting straight from the jar.

I don't think that's really true though, these paints are mainly made for airbrushing and you need various viscosities for different things with that. If you were supposed to just dump thinner in there it would probably just come thinned.

I think I got pretty close for a first try! I had really bad turnaround reference photos because I couldn't get the part positioned right, so I was just winging it based on those and my calipers. The arm mount peg is too far back and it's a little oversized but I'm feeling good about where this is going.

Plum still have some kits in production, 2 Vic vipers (Gradius 5 & Gradius 2), also the Silverhawk from darius in p1 & p2 colours. Theres still the plum R9 kit too which isnt too hard to find (they re-released it for r-type final 2).

Theres 2 kits I know of, but there may be more. Bad news is they're resin garage kits. I'm hoping Plum might do an injection kit eventually.

Left is made by Spectres/13b, the right is made by Conflict. I wouldn't be surprised if there's been a few wonderfest kits at some stage too.

What is everyone's views on the different grades? I so far have done 1 EG, 2 HG, and 1 RG. I have a MG coming in the mail, and then I plan to move to my first PG. I like how posable the HG are, but I also like how detailed the RG are (my Quan T falls apart really easily when I try to pose it). I'm hoping the MG works out well.

MGs are basically just big HGs. I haven't found them any more difficult or noticeably different in construction. They can have some posability problems especially due to weight pulling on the shoulders.
RG and PG both look great but they have some fiddly bits and parts can often feel insecure.

RGs are probably my favorite because of the detail and engineering they manage to cram into a 1/144, but the pre-molded frames get loose over time, especially with repeated posing.
Starting with the Unicorn they became more like mini-MGs, so those and anything after are rock solid.

Hey I placed an order on HLJ on Monday. Two things in stock, two things backordered. The payment was received for the in stock things on Tuesday and they were moved to processing. On Thursday the other two things came in stock, became paid for, and are now ready to ship. The first two things however are still processing.
Is it normal for processing to take so long? Previous purchases happened within a couple hours. Parts of the website also led me to believe that you don't get charged for things until they are in the warehouse which isn't the case here.

If I didn't want a theme to win then why would I even put it as an option for people to vote on? The gates generally have a rounded edge and are thicker than connectors. The instructions sometimes show a picture of where to cut it free if they feel you may miscut something I feel like it's typically obvious. If you aren't sure, just don't cut and sand before seeing exactly where and how the piece is about to fit.

no it isn't. plastic cement is usually mostly something like butyl acetate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or limonene that actually melts the plastic together rather than being a traditional adhestive. you can use super glue but it's not ideal, just get some cement it's cheap as fuck

Really good for that. Theyre pretty good with cutting, not quite godhand spn120, bit sturdier blade though. Had a pair for about a year or more and they need sharpened after about 30 kits.

scale model companies usually does "after service" support where you can buy individual sprues of the kit, but not individual parts. some companies are very strict about it though especially Bandai because some people bulk buy individual sprues for kitbashing (they want you to buy the whole kit instead just for that one part you need)

depends really what base color you had in mind. gray is always the "middle of the road" choice, but if you're working on light colors, white is better. then black for dark or metallic colors. sometimes you'd want to use pink for red or skin colors.

I fucked up on a thigh piece because I got bold and I thought I'd do both legs at the same time since the arms went so smoothly. Obviously I mixed up left and right on one side and I had glued the bits together before I realized. The connectors that were glued broke when I parted the pieces off and I thought I'd made a disaster, but I cut off the residue and glued the parts together again and at least for now it seems fine. I'll never get cocky again. I'm disappointed that even by working carefully on nubs some of the white at the base would still show even if the surface was sanded flat with 2000 grit. Maybe I was afraid of oversanding and I just did too little.
Overall it was fun and photos don't do justice to how damn good she looks. When I started assembling the actual figure together I felt this magic I had not felt in many many years.

I'm coming into this from Warhammer and it's fucking mind blowing how cheap it all is. I'm used to paying like $45 for a pack of 10 dinky little soldiers that are each like 3 pieces, meanwhile I can get a perfectly good HG with a lot more parts for like $15. Why is it like this? It's a blessing though because I already have all the tools and stuff from the other hobby, so the price of entry is literally just the $8 to $30 I'm paying per full kit.

One question though, I'm used to topcoating entire models all at once in Warhammer. Can I do that here, or will it fuck up the joints and stuff? If that is a problem, would it be okay if I just mask the little rubber joint pieces? The whole appeal of this versus Warhammer to me is that there's more instant gratification, you build the kit and it looks nice from the getgo and anything additional you do is just icing on the cake. I'm looking to just paint the details instead of using stickers, do some panel lining, and spray a matte topcoat on top of all of it, but if I have to take all the little tiny bits apart or do it per-piece before assembling that kind of defeats the purpose for me.

As you should be well aware, GW are greedy fucks. Bandai also keeps prices low by producing gunpla locally in their own factories.

I semi-disassemble parts for stuff like priming and topcoating. Once you go through the process once or twice you will understand how the joints work and where/how to mask. Like for instance, with balljoints I wrap the ball in masking tape, and stuff a little bit of tape into the socket. This is because the joints are already engineered for certain tolerances, and if you paint or topcoat them, it might make the joint too tight. That can make them more liable to break.

So yeah, just jump in and try it, get a feel for how far to disassemble so that the spray hits everything and doesn't gum up anything. Oh yeah, and if you didn't know already, matte topcoats will fog up clear pieces, so take those out before spraying if you don't want that.

Is it normal when joints aren't loose - they're smooth and stay put - but pop off really easily when you go too far with the articulation? Depends on the kit, although in my experience it's not typical. If you're coming from western action figures, gunpla definitely has a much smoother and wider range of movement which may make it seem like they can pop off easily; they're definitely less "robust" than an action figure that kids would bang around on the floor or against each other.

1.)cram as much parts possible in 1 runner. Molds are still one of the biggest cost in making model kits. injection moulds of plastic model kits can cost upwards of $1 Million and more. This is also the reason why Bandai makes a lot of variation that basically reuses runners and parts to reduce tooling costs. that's why pretty much other model kits makers still use their old molds and just sometimes crank a few details in the mold (Airfix still uses their molds since the 70s and just edited the molds)
2.)unlike other companies, Bandai knows that Gundam does sell, and therefore sometimes rely on multiple printing of model kits to recoup the costs. that's why their other non-gundam model kits are priced higher than the usual Gundam equivalent because they will never reprint those kits as much as Gundam (I think those Star Wars kits haven't seen any reprint lately, along with Pacific Rim). Pic related, despite VF-1 is an iconic robot, and sell really well, VF-1 model kit has not yet seen a reprint.

unfortunately, as Bandai try to pursuit to make Gunpla as cheap as possible to sell, there are many downsides.
1.) only popular MS gets kits. there's a lot of crying about no MG G-Self, wondering why there is no MG Barbatos Lupus/Rex when MG Barbatos is already there, which is 90% parts needed to make Lupus/Rex already there. But data shows that despite G-Self and Lupus/Rex are popular, their HG/FM kits didn't do so hot, so its a huge risk to make MGs of them.
2.)Bandai's complete aversion of pricing their model kits too high to their detriment. Bandai has made some dubious decisions regarding choosing which robots to make model kits because their aversion to make model kits of robots that are popular but will surely be pricey. they have completely botched some model kits because they have no confidence in some MS selling well in high prices.

Yeah that sounds fairly normal, especially for ball joints like wrists/ankles and hips. I think they have less friction compared to western action figures so they pop off easier at the ends of their range rather than resist and potentially bend, especially since they're models for a (comparatively) older audience.

you definitely can. But my advise is not too. and don't paint the PCs (little rubber things that hold the joints))

in my case, I build MGs (ones that has internal frame to make it look more mechanically realistic)

I always paint the parts first, top coat the internal frame. for the armor, I paint the parts-gloss topcoat - apply the decals -apply satin coat, all before putting it together.

But you do you. some people enjoy just snap-building the kit, some enjoy doing some stuff like putting panel lining, color correcting with gundam markers and topcoating it, some enjoy fully painting the kit, some enjoy customizing their kits, some enjoy doing full monty, customizing and making dioramas with it. just do what floats your boat.

I still wish there was a one size fits all for top coating. I've done sections (arms, body, leg etc), I've done them in pieces, and internal frame / armor parts but there just always sees to be the issue of tight fits after coating or immovable joints.

You can just scrape the topcoat off the joints or sand/scrape the holes. Pushing really hard is also an option. I do it piece by piece and this is what I do. I would rather make sure everything gets a perfect even coat than missing stuff on a large assembly

Man, Newtype has really gone to the dogs. Their stock is crap, they are on the West Coast yet Eastern and Midwest shops get the new stuff weeks before them, and they take a week just to toss the stuff in a box and slap a label on it. Then UPS takes two weeks to travel 3 states.

I've stopped using them completely. I still have 30$ in refund credits but no new stock means nothing to use them on. At this point I've moved on to USAGS on gunplastyle I've only used them so frequently due to being 10 minutes away, but they closed their warehouse so no reason to wait for a slow store.
