They are meant to evoke the scenes they represent, but modern playsets are just a chunk of a movie set re-created in 1/1 scale with the figures. There's no imagination there. I appreciate attention to detail and production value but there's nothing special about the Blockade Runner halls or the Carbon Freeze chamber playsets. They're boring, uninspired, and incredibly limited. They're pre-made diorama parts and don't do anything for me.
The reason the Jurassic Park gate failed is because it was just another piece of a diorama, and it's the kind of thing that makers can already put together with superior quality. I'm not saying that an adult collectable needs to have play features but who was going to pay $250 for a huge ass gate that only shows up very briefly in the movie? It's not like it's the gate from King Kong which is the centerpiece of multiple key scenes in the movie it's from, including a major action scene.
